Sony says the Pro can play more than 8,500 PS4 games, but its Game Boost feature may improve frame rates in some PS4 and PS5 games—not every compatible title. The practical answer depends on the exact RPGs you play, whether you own them on disc, and what else you expect to play.
Can the PS5 Pro play PS4 RPGs?
Yes. PlayStation says more than 8,500 PS4 games can be played on PS5 Pro, while noting that a small number of PS4 games are incompatible. Its separate backward-compatibility guidance says the overwhelming majority of the 4,000-plus PS4 games in its library are playable on PS5 consoles. Those figures describe compatibility, not how many games receive a performance or visual upgrade. PlayStation 5 Pro product information and PlayStation’s PS4 backward-compatibility guidance explain the scope and exceptions.

So if your older RPG is a PS4 game, it is likely to work on the Pro, but check the specific title if you need certainty. Playing a game successfully and getting a Pro-specific improvement are separate questions.
Will older RPGs run better on PS5 Pro?
Sometimes, but there is no blanket improvement promised for older RPGs. PlayStation says Game Boost can give some PS4 and PS5 games faster or smoother frame rates. Pro-enhanced features vary by game, and the company’s supported-title information should be checked for the games you actually play. A compatibility listing by itself does not establish that a game has enhanced performance, higher resolution, or other Pro-specific features.

PlayStation lead architect Mark Cerny said in February 2026 that the upgraded PSSR upscaler had been used to boost the effective resolution of more than 50 titles on PS5 Pro to date. That figure is not a count of older RPGs, nor does it establish that every title in your library benefits. Check the current PS5 Pro supported-game information and the game’s own details before treating an upgrade as a reason to buy. PSSR is an upscaling feature, not a guarantee that a game’s frame rate or design will change.
When does a PS5 Pro make sense for an older-RPG player?
You already own a PS5
If your current PS5 plays the RPGs you want and those games are the main reason you use the console, keeping it is the more defensible choice. The official information establishes broad PS4 compatibility and selective, game-dependent benefits; it does not promise a major improvement across an older RPG library. An upgrade is easier to justify if you have checked your specific games and also want benefits in supported newer titles.
You are buying your first PS5
The decision is different if you do not own a PS5 yet. The Pro can serve as your first console for compatible PS4 games as well as PS5 games, so compare its current local price with your budget and the games you intend to play. Its case is stronger if you also care about supported current games or Pro-specific features, rather than expecting every older RPG to look or run better.
You play physical games
The PS5 Pro launched as a disc-less console. Sony said the Disc Drive was available separately, so owners of physical RPGs should include the cost of a compatible drive in their calculation and verify present availability and compatibility. Sony’s September 2024 announcement listed launch prices of $699.99 USD, £699.99 GBP, €799.99 EUR, and ¥119,980 JPY including tax; those are historical launch MSRPs, not current price quotes. Check local pricing and any required drive cost before deciding whether the upgrade represents good value. Sony’s PS5 Pro launch announcement gives the original configuration and prices.

- List the RPGs you play. Confirm whether each is a PS4 or PS5 version and whether it is compatible with PS5 Pro.
- Check for a specific benefit. Look for the game in current PS5 Pro-enhanced information or its official game details. Do not infer an enhancement from compatibility alone.
- Account for your current console. If you already have a PS5 that meets your needs, compare the expected benefit against the cost of replacing it. If this would be your first PS5, weigh the Pro against your local alternatives and budget.
- Include physical-game needs. If you own discs, check compatible Disc Drive availability and its additional cost.
- Consider the rest of your play time. The upgrade is more compelling if you also play newer supported titles whose Pro features matter to you.
The decisive question is not simply whether the Pro can play your older RPGs; most PS4 games are playable. It is whether your particular games have benefits you value enough to justify the price, especially if you already own a PS5.
