Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a fake login page, a password manager with strict domain matching is the more direct safeguard. It should offer or fill a saved password only when the current website matches the login’s saved domain, so an unexpected refusal to autofill can expose a lookalike address. Browser phishing protection is a complementary warning layer: it checks the destination for signals associated with phishing, malware, or dangerous downloads and can stop you before the page loads.
Use both. Treat a browser warning or an unexpected autofill mismatch as a reason to stop and verify the address, not as a prompt to continue by entering the password manually. Neither mechanism guarantees that every newly created or cleverly concealed fake site will be identified.

What each protection actually checks
Password-manager autofill checks the login’s website
A password manager stores a credential together with the website where it belongs. When you open a page, the manager compares that page’s domain with the saved login’s domain. If they do not match, a correctly configured manager should withhold the username and password instead of filling them into a similar-looking address.
That behavior turns autofill into a useful domain-mismatch signal. A counterfeit banking page might copy the bank’s colors and logo, but it still has a different domain. If the manager does not offer the saved login there, the mismatch deserves investigation. The UK National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) describes this as a key benefit: “It can also protect against phishing, as password managers can be better than humans at detecting fake websites.” Its buyer guidance adds that “The password manager should only offer credentials for the site that they are saved for.”

The manager is acting at the moment you are about to disclose a secret. It is not classifying the page as safe or unsafe in general; it is deciding whether this particular saved credential belongs on this particular site.
Browser phishing protection checks the destination
Browser protection works earlier in the visit. Google Safe Browsing is used by Chrome and other browsers to warn before users visit sites classified as dangerous or download harmful applications. Microsoft describes Edge SmartScreen as warning about potential phishing sites and malicious downloads.
Google’s standard Safe Browsing service uses threat information and detection systems. Enhanced Safe Browsing adds real-time checks against known phishing and malware lists, protection against some previously unknown attacks, and more tailored protections. Google says that enabling Enhanced Safe Browsing shares additional security-related information to improve protection, so the setting involves a security-versus-data-sharing choice.

It can appear even when you have never saved a login for that site and before you reach a sign-in form. The warning depends on the service’s signals, lists, and configuration; it is not a promise that every newly registered or evasive phishing page will be blocked.
Which one is better for fake websites?
They are complementary controls rather than two versions of the same feature. A password manager gives the stronger direct check against submitting a saved password to the wrong domain. Browser protection adds a broader warning about dangerous destinations, including pages where you have no stored credentials.

| Protection | What is checked | When it acts | What you should do when it objects |
|---|---|---|---|
| Password-manager matching | The current domain against the domain saved with the credential | When a login is offered or autofilled | Do not paste the password manually; inspect the address and navigate to the known site through a trusted bookmark or typed address |
| Browser phishing protection | Threat signals associated with phishing, malware, or dangerous downloads | During navigation, before or while a dangerous page loads | Leave the page unless you can independently verify that the warning is a mistake and the destination is legitimate |
This is a comparison of documented mechanisms, not a controlled head-to-head test. The practical answer is to keep the browser’s protection enabled and use a manager that enforces strict website matching.
How to use both layers safely
1. Choose strict website matching
In the password manager’s security or autofill settings, prefer the option that matches the full saved website domain and does not automatically treat lookalike subdomains as equivalent. Managers differ in how they handle subdomains, ports, and related domains, so read the setting’s explanation rather than assuming that “same company” means “same website.”

If you save a counterfeit address, the manager can correctly match the counterfeit address later; domain matching cannot repair an incorrect original record.
2. Let the manager fill; do not copy credentials into surprises
On a familiar site, invoke the manager’s normal autofill control. If the expected login is missing, pause. Compare the registered domain character by character, looking for a changed top-level domain, inserted words, substituted characters, or an unfamiliar subdomain. Open the service from a bookmark you created earlier or type its known address instead of following the suspicious link.
Do not defeat a mismatch by copying the password from the vault into the page. The mismatch is the control working as designed. If the address is genuinely correct, update the saved login deliberately after confirming the service’s official domain.

3. Keep browser warnings turned on
Check the browser’s privacy and security settings and leave its phishing and malware protection enabled. Enhanced Safe Browsing can provide more real-time and tailored checks, but review the browser’s explanation of what additional security information is shared before enabling it.

When a warning appears, close the tab or use the browser’s back control. Do not click through merely because the page looks familiar, the message claims your account is urgent, or the site is one you use often. A compromised legitimate site can also present a dangerous page.
4. Treat either signal as a stop condition
A warning and an autofill failure provide different evidence. A warning says the destination has been associated with danger signals. An autofill failure says the page does not match the location saved for that credential. Either one warrants independent verification before you enter a password, payment detail, recovery code, or one-time code.
Where each layer can fail
New or evasive phishing pages
Browser protection relies on detection and threat intelligence. A page can be too new to appear on a list, change its behavior, or evade the signals used by the service. Absence of a warning therefore does not establish that a page is trustworthy.
Domain matching has a different blind spot: it checks whether the page matches the saved domain, not whether the page’s content is honest. If attackers compromise a legitimate website or a legitimate subdomain contains a malicious element, the domain may still match the saved login.

Social engineering can override a good design
1Password documents that a malicious or compromised page can try to persuade a user to select a matching item and trigger autofill. The manager’s matching rule remains useful, but a person can still approve an action after being manipulated. The vendor recommends locking the extension on unfamiliar or risky sites when maximum caution is needed.
Attackers may also pressure you to disable warnings, install an extension, reveal a recovery code, or move a conversation to a supposedly safer page. Neither protection can stop a decision you knowingly approve outside the normal autofill and navigation flow.
The password manager itself can be impersonated
A 2025 USENIX Security paper studied a different attack: a malicious site copied the unlock interface of a locked password-manager browser extension. In a large-scale simulation involving 29,800 participants, the researchers detected more than 400 instances of users of selected third-party password managers. More than 30% of those users entered their master password into the deceptive interface, with the rate reaching 58% for one manager.
Those percentages apply to that simulated extension-unlock attack and sample, not to all fake bank pages, all password-manager users, or a general probability of compromise. The study identifies phishing-resistant multi-factor authentication (MFA) as a mitigation for account access in this scenario.
Device compromise is a separate threat
Microsoft’s Edge guidance notes that someone who gains access to the operating-system login session may be able to retrieve passwords saved in the built-in manager. That is a device-security problem, not evidence that browser phishing warnings are better at identifying fake websites. Use a device lock, current operating-system updates, and a separate account for everyday work where appropriate.

A practical decision framework
If you are looking at a login page
- Read the complete domain in the address bar, not just the logo, page title, or first words of the URL.
- Check whether the browser displays a phishing or malware warning. If it does, leave the page.
- Ask the password manager to fill the saved login. If it does not offer the credential, assume the address is wrong until you prove otherwise.
- Reach the service through a trusted bookmark or a manually typed address and repeat the check.
If the manager offers a credential but the page still feels wrong
Do not treat a matching offer as a safety certificate. Verify that you are on the expected service, that the connection is encrypted, and that no warning is present. A compromised legitimate domain or a malicious page element can still create risk. For sensitive accounts, consider locking the manager extension before visiting unfamiliar sites and unlocking it only when you intentionally need a credential.
If the browser warns but the manager offers a login
Follow the warning and stop. A matching saved domain does not cancel a browser’s threat signal; it only means the address resembles the location stored for that login. Contact the service through a known channel if you need to report a suspected compromise.
Why a password manager still matters beyond phishing
The manager’s value is not limited to recognizing fake sites. NCSC guidance also identifies strong password generation and unique credentials for different services as benefits. If one website is breached, a unique password prevents attackers from immediately reusing that password elsewhere.
Protect the vault with a strong, unique master password and the strongest MFA the service supports. Keep recovery information offline or otherwise protected, and install manager extensions only from the service’s legitimate distribution channel. These steps reduce the damage from reused passwords and make a single deceptive login less likely to become an account-wide compromise.
Phishing-resistant MFA as an additional safeguard
For accounts that support it, phishing-resistant MFA can limit the value of a stolen password or a master-password imitation. The USENIX study specifically discusses phishing-resistant MFA as a mitigation for the extension-unlock impersonation attack. A FIDO2 security key is one possible form, but compatibility varies by account and service. MFA does not replace domain-matched autofill or browser warnings; it adds another barrier after a password has been exposed.
Bottom line for everyday use
Choose a password manager that offers credentials only for their saved website and use that behavior as a domain check. Keep browser phishing protection enabled for destination-level warnings, including pages where you have no stored login. When either layer objects, stop, verify the domain through a trusted route, and do not override the signal by manually entering the password. The combination is stronger than relying on either feature alone, while recognizing that new pages, compromised legitimate sites, social engineering, and device compromise remain outside what these controls can guarantee.
