Usually not. A lightweight windbreaker handles wind and a brief sprinkle. It is not dependable protection for sustained rain unless it is actually waterproof. If the forecast has real rain, the route is exposed, or shelter is far away, carry a waterproof, breathable shell with sealed seams and a hood.
Windproof, water-resistant and waterproof are different things
“Windbreaker” describes a purpose, not a rain rating. The fabrics and coatings vary widely, so no claim holds for every jacket sold under that name. REI’s expert advice draws the line clearly: water- and wind-resistant jackets do not totally block rain and wind, so they give only moderate protection. Its hiking clothing guide recommends a waterproof, breathable rain jacket for hiking in wet weather.

REI describes the ideal this way: a jacket that blocks rain and wind but lets you sweat without feeling like you’re wearing a plastic bag. A typical windbreaker meets the second half of that better than the first.

When a windbreaker is acceptable
- Brief, light shower, low consequence: A water-resistant windbreaker can work if you are fine with getting somewhat damp and can turn back, reach shelter or change layers. This is a cautious inference from the “moderate protection” distinction above, not a tested guarantee.
- Dry, windy days: This is what the jacket is designed for.
When you need a real rain shell
- Sustained rain: Water-resistant fabric tends to wet out, and a soaked layer stops doing its job.
- Cold conditions: Wet clothing loses its warmth and costs you heat.
- Exposed routes or no easy shelter: Getting wet leaves you with fewer ways out.
- Long days with changing weather or large elevation shifts: Temperature, terrain, distance, duration and elevation all change what you need.
For seriously soggy weather, REI also suggests rain pants. A jacket alone leaves your legs and the lower half of your pack exposed.

What to look for in a rain jacket

Examples of these features on real jackets
These are illustrations of what to compare, not endorsements from independent testing. REI lists its Trailmade Rain Jacket with a two-layer waterproof/breathable coating, critically sealed seams and a listed weight of 15.9 ounces. Its Rainier is described as a packable 11.3-ounce shell with a 2.5-layer waterproof/breathable membrane, sealed seams and pit zips. The weight difference shows the usual trade-off between a lighter, more packable shell and a heavier one. Stock, specs and prices change, so check the current listing.
Breathability has limits
Waterproof does not mean you stay dry inside. In high humidity or during hard uphill effort, even waterproof/breathable jackets can feel less breathable. Open the pit zips and front zipper while climbing, slow your pace if you can, and adjust layers underneath. Overheating in a shell can leave you as wet as rain would.

Can you upgrade a windbreaker with a DWR treatment?
No. DWR (durable water repellent) is a surface finish that makes water bead up. It does not change a garment’s construction category. Treating a non-waterproof windbreaker will not give it sealed seams or a waterproof membrane.
