One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe short answer is yes—most laptops are considered PCs in everyday conversation and in many technical contexts. But “PC” isn’t one single rigid definition; it changes depending on who’s speaking and what software or hardware assumptions they’re making.
This guide explains what PC means in 2024, how laptops fit, and how MacBook and Chromebooks are usually treated. You’ll also get practical wording you can use when buying software, talking to IT support, or reading product listings.
What Does PC Mean in 2024?
“PC” originally meant personal computer, and it still can. In modern tech talk, it also commonly means an IBM PC–compatible computer (the kind that can run Windows and other software built for x86/x64 systems).
Because the term is used by marketers, software vendors, and support teams, “PC” often becomes a convenience label rather than a strict technical category. That’s why the “is a laptop a PC?” question feels simple but can come with exceptions.

Is a Laptop Considered a PC?
For most people: Yes. A laptop is a personal computer, and it’s usually grouped with PCs—especially when paired with Windows on Intel or AMD hardware.
For some contexts: you might see “PC” used to mean not a Mac. In that case, a MacBook is still a computer, but people may call it “not a PC” just because they’re contrasting it with Windows devices.

How Different Device Types Fit the Term PC
Windows laptops (Intel and AMD)
Windows laptops are the most straightforward “PC” category: they’re personal computers and typically run Windows (or Windows-compatible software). In product listings, “PC” usually means these devices.
If a download says it’s for Windows PC, it normally targets Windows laptops and desktops.
MacBook (Apple silicon and Intel)
A MacBook is absolutely a computer and technically a personal computer. However, in everyday speech—especially in workplaces—“PC” sometimes gets used as shorthand for “Windows computer.”
So you may hear: “I have a PC and a Mac.” That doesn’t mean the Mac isn’t a PC by the original definition; it’s just a naming habit based on OS.

Chromebooks are also personal computers, but many vendors use “PC” to mean “Windows PC,” which can exclude ChromeOS. The term is often about compatibility: does the app support ChromeOS?
In other words, a Chromebook can be a “PC” (personal computer) while still not being treated as a “PC” by software that says “PC” but really means “Windows.”
iPad and tablets
An iPad (and other tablets) is a computer in a broad sense, but in most everyday tech usage it’s not called a “PC.” You’ll usually see it labeled separately: tablet, iPad, iOS device.

If a product says “PC software,” it often excludes iPad/iOS by default—even if the app exists elsewhere.
Servers and mini PCs
Servers and mini PCs are still PCs because they’re personal computers (or computer systems) in a category sense. The “laptop” part is about form factor; the “PC” part is about being a computer you can interact with as an individual user or organization.
When People Say PC: The Most Common Meanings
To avoid confusion, it helps to map “PC” to the meaning the speaker is using. Three meanings show up constantly in 2024.
Meaning 1: Any computer that isn’t a Mac
This is the most common in casual office conversations. People say “PC” when they mean “Windows machine.”
Example: “That form only works on PCs,” often really means “works on Windows computers.”
Meaning 2: A computer that runs x86 Windows software
Software vendors sometimes say “PC” when they mean the Windows ecosystem and its architectures. A laptop is still a PC, but the important question becomes OS and CPU compatibility.
Example: A legacy installer for Windows might work on Windows laptops, but not on macOS or ChromeOS.
Meaning 3: A general category (desktop, laptop, etc.)
In technical writing, “PC” can mean personal computer broadly—covering desktops, laptops, and sometimes even mini PCs.

Practical Examples: How to Answer in Real Conversations
-
Someone asks: “Do you use a PC?”
If you’re on a Windows laptop: yes, you’re on a PC. If you’re on a MacBook: many people will say no (because they mean Windows), even though you are still on a personal computer.Recommended Free Tools

Someone asks: “Is this software for PC?”
Treat it as: “Is it for Windows PC?” Then verify OS support (Windows vs macOS vs ChromeOS) on the vendor page. -
IT support asks: “Send PC details.”
They usually want device model, OS version, and sometimes hardware info—often assuming Windows. If you’re on macOS, the details still matter; the label might just be old wording.
PC vs. Laptop vs. Computer: Quick Reference Table
| Term | Most common meaning in 2024 | Does it include a laptop? |
|---|---|---|
| Computer | Any general-purpose computing device | Yes |
| Personal computer (PC) | Original definition: a personal computer | Yes |
| PC (shorthand in offices) | Usually means Windows device, not Mac | Yes for Windows laptops; usually “no” for MacBook (by habit) |
| Laptop | Form factor: portable clamshell device | Yes by definition (a laptop is a computer) |
Common Confusions and Gotchas
Buying software: compatibility assumptions
“PC only” usually means Windows unless the vendor explicitly lists macOS, Linux, or ChromeOS. The most reliable path is to check supported operating systems rather than the marketing label.
If you’re on a MacBook, look for whether the vendor offers an app for macOS or a web version.
Work or school IT policies
Organizations often standardize around a device type. You might see wording like “PC login” even if the environment supports both Windows and macOS devices.
If you’re unsure, ask IT what they mean by PC—Windows, or any managed computer?
Word choice in listings and tech support
Some product pages use “PC” when they mean “Windows desktop/laptop.” Others use it as a general category. That inconsistency is normal, but it’s also where mistakes happen.

If a listing doesn’t list macOS or ChromeOS, assume it may be Windows-focused.
Operating system names vs. device names
macOS is the OS for MacBook. iOS is the OS for iPhone and iPad. ChromeOS runs on Chromebooks. None of those terms are “PC,” but software compatibility depends on OS, not just device form factor.
So a Windows laptop and a desktop are both “PCs” in the broad sense, but they’re different in the OS and drivers.

If an app says it supports PC only
Do this instead of assuming: check the vendor’s system requirements for Windows versions (for example, Windows 10 or Windows 11), and look for separate listings for macOS or ChromeOS.
If the app only lists Windows, it likely won’t install on macOS. Some apps offer a web app; others may not.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf a driver or download says PC
Search for whether the vendor provides a driver package for macOS or for a specific device class (for example, printers often use different drivers across OSes).
When in doubt, verify by model number and OS. For Windows laptops, look for driver packages labeled “Windows 10/11” and architectures like x64 when provided.
If support asks for a PC name or Windows version
If you’re using a MacBook, you still can collect the details they need—just translate them into what support actually uses: macOS version, model, and logs/screenshots.

Is an Apple MacBook a PC?
By the original meaning (personal computer), yes. In everyday office slang, “PC” often means Windows, so people may say no—but that’s about naming convention, not the underlying concept of being a computer.
Is a Chromebook a PC?
By “personal computer,” yes. But many software products that say “PC” really mean “Windows PC,” so the Chromebook may or may not be supported depending on the app.
Is a laptop the same as a PC?
A laptop is a type of personal computer. “Laptop” describes the form factor; “PC” describes the category of personal computer.
Does “PC” mean Windows 11?
Not necessarily. “PC” is usually shorthand for a Windows device, but the exact required Windows version (Windows 10 vs Windows 11) depends on the product’s system requirements.

If a website says it works on PC, will it work on iPad?
Usually no unless the site explicitly offers an iPad/iOS app or a mobile-compatible web experience. “PC” typically points to desktop/laptop operating systems, not iPhone/iPad.
Bottom Line
Yes—most laptops are considered PCs because they’re personal computers. The only time the answer gets messy is when “PC” is used as shorthand for “Windows computer,” which can lead people to say a MacBook is not a PC.
If you need certainty, don’t rely on the word “PC” alone. Check the supported operating systems (Windows, macOS, ChromeOS) and system requirements on the vendor page.
