A phone hotspot is often the better choice for occasional use because it requires no extra hardware. Neither option is automatically faster: your plan, signal, network congestion, device, and location all matter.
What a dedicated hotspot changes
A dedicated hotspot is a separate device that uses a cellular connection to create a local Wi-Fi network. Verizon describes it as a standalone device for getting online where its mobile network is available; it also requires an eligible plan and usable network signal. Verizon’s hotspot FAQ explains those requirements.

With a phone hotspot, the phone itself shares its cellular connection over Wi-Fi. The practical difference is separation: a dedicated device handles the connection, while your phone remains available for calls, navigation, and other use.

Phone hotspot vs. dedicated hotspot
| Factor | Phone hotspot | Dedicated hotspot |
|---|---|---|
| Hardware | Uses a phone you already own. | Requires a separate device. |
| Phone battery and availability | Sharing Wi-Fi draws power from the phone; Motorola advises plugging in when practical. Motorola’s hotspot guidance covers battery use. | Has its own battery, so it does not drain the phone’s battery, and can be left with other users. Verizon’s support page describes this benefit. |
| Connected devices | Check the exact phone model and its settings; there is no universal phone limit established here. | Verizon says most of its hotspot models allow 10–15 Wi-Fi devices, depending on model. That range does not apply to every hotspot. Verizon’s FAQ |
| Service plan and data | Hotspot allowance and speeds depend on the phone plan. | May require an eligible connected-device plan; check availability for your account and device. |
| Speed and reliability | Depends on the phone, plan, signal, congestion, and location. | Depends on the hotspot, plan, signal, congestion, and location. There is no universal speed winner. |
| Typical fit | Occasional sharing and convenience. | Frequent sharing, several users, or leaving internet access for others. |
Will a hotspot device be faster than your phone?
Not necessarily. A dedicated hotspot can be more convenient for a sustained connection, but the device type alone does not establish faster service. Coverage, signal strength, congestion, plan terms, and the hardware in both devices affect performance.

T-Mobile gives illustrative mobile-hotspot ranges of about 10–50 Mbps on 4G and 50–150+ Mbps on 5G, while noting that signal and congestion cause variation. These are broad estimates, not a forecast or guarantee for a particular device or location. T-Mobile’s comparison provides that context.
Check the data allowance before choosing
Hotspot data is governed by plan terms, not simply by whether you use a phone or a separate device. Check the high-speed allowance and what happens when it runs out; a plan may slow hotspot speeds after the allowance is used. The following are U.S. carrier examples from support pages accessed or updated in 2026, not industry-wide limits:

These examples describe named carrier plans, not what a particular dedicated hotspot plan includes. Confirm the current terms for your own account before buying hardware or changing plans.
Choose based on how you will use it
Use your phone hotspot when
- You only need to connect another device occasionally.
- You want to avoid carrying and buying separate hardware.
- Your phone plan includes enough hotspot data for your use.
Consider a dedicated hotspot when
- You share a connection frequently or for long stretches and want to avoid making your phone the access point.
- Several people or devices need to connect; check the specific hotspot’s supported-device limit.
- You want to leave internet access with other users while taking your phone with you.
What to check before buying a hotspot
- Confirm carrier compatibility. Ask whether the carrier supports the exact device, not just its brand or network technology.
- Confirm plan eligibility and cost. A standalone hotspot may need a separate connected-device plan, and the required plan may not be available on every account.
- Read the data and speed terms. Find the high-speed hotspot allowance and the speed or service behavior after it is used.
- Check coverage where you will use it. A hotspot needs a usable cellular signal; a separate device cannot solve a coverage gap by itself.
- Check capacity and battery needs. Verify the model’s connected-device limit and whether its battery suits the length of your sessions.
Security and alternatives to Wi-Fi hotspotting
Protect either kind of hotspot with a strong password and a security mode supported by both the hotspot and the devices connecting to it. Motorola recommends WPA3 where supported, WPA2/WPA3 for newer compatible devices, or WPA2 (AES) for wider compatibility, and advises against turning security off. Motorola’s hotspot guidance discusses those options.

- CONNECT UP TO 32 DEVICES AND FREE UP YOUR PHONE: A dedicated hotspot outperforms phone tethering. Connect laptops, tablets, and smart devices simultaneously while keeping your phone free
If only one nearby device needs a connection, a phone may also offer USB tethering or Bluetooth tethering. Motorola describes USB as a wired option and Bluetooth as a lower-power option; availability and behavior vary by phone and carrier. These are alternatives to Wi-Fi sharing, not proof that a separate hotspot will be faster.
