It depends on what you stream and what your PC actually uses. For a PC you already own, the extra cost is mainly electricity, so measure its real power draw and multiply by your local marginal tariff. For prerecorded videos looping unattended, a managed cloud service may be cheaper than leaving a PC on—but compare the price for your required quality, storage, and hours. A rented cloud PC or encoding API has different runtime and resource charges; “cloud” is not automatically a flat, all-inclusive deal.
First decide what “cloud streaming” means
Two different kinds of service are often called cloud streaming, and their costs are not directly interchangeable:
- Managed prerecorded-video relay: You upload files or create a playlist, and a service repeatedly sends the video to YouTube. This can replace a local computer for an unattended prerecorded channel.
- Cloud PC or encoding service: You rent a virtual machine (VM) or use an encoding API and run an encoder or production workflow remotely. This is closer to renting a computer; compute or active encoding time, storage, transfer, setup, and monitoring may all matter.
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API is a managed encoding and distribution product billed according to active channel time, resolution, inputs, outputs, and distribution; it is not the same type of product as a low-priced prerecorded-stream relay. See Google Cloud Live Stream API pricing.
How to calculate the cost of leaving your PC on
Measure the complete setup
Use a plug-in electricity usage meter to measure the equipment during the actual streaming workload. Include the PC and, where practical, any capture or encoding equipment that will stay on. Do not treat the power supply unit’s maximum rating as the computer’s average wall consumption.

Use your household’s marginal electricity rate
Calculate the estimated energy charge with this formula:
Average measured watts ÷ 1,000 × streaming hours × applicable marginal ₹/kWh

Use the rate relevant to the additional electricity on your current bill, including the slab you expect that use to fall into. Indian electricity tariffs vary by state, DISCOM, customer category, and slab; there is no reliable single national household rate. The Central Electricity Authority’s 2025 compilation, published or crawled in 2026, breaks out tariff and average billing-rate data by state, DISCOM, and category: Electricity Tariff & Duty and Average rates of electricity supply in India. Check the applicable local tariff rather than applying a nationwide assumption.
Worked example, using an explicitly hypothetical draw
At an assumed average draw of 100 W for 24 hours a day over 30 days, the PC uses 72 kWh: 100 ÷ 1,000 × 24 × 30 = 72. Multiply 72 by your own marginal ₹/kWh rate to estimate the energy cost. The 100 W figure is an illustration, not a claim about typical PC consumption.

Compare cloud options against the same job
Match the operating hours, input type, quality, number of destinations, and storage before comparing totals. A monthly starting price for a prerecorded relay does not tell you the price of a VM capable of your encoding workload, and a small VM bundle does not establish that it can encode a particular stream adequately.

Do not compare a rupee electricity estimate with a USD cloud price without checking a current exchange rate and any applicable taxes, fees, or payment-conversion costs. A PC you already own is a sunk purchase cost for an incremental monthly comparison; if you need to buy a PC, include that separate capital cost. Likewise, a VM’s advertised compute price may not include all the storage, transfer, setup, and monitoring your workflow requires.

Choose the option that fits your stream
For prerecorded videos that need to loop unattended

For a live camera, gameplay, or interactive production
A prerecorded-video relay is not a substitute for a live input and production workflow. You can keep your own PC on and encode locally, or evaluate a cloud VM or a suitable encoding service. If a camera or other live source is at home, sending it to a cloud machine still depends on the connection that carries that source to the cloud; a remote machine does not fix a weak home upload connection.

YouTube settings still matter wherever the encoder runs
YouTube’s recommendations apply whether the encoder is on your PC or a cloud machine. Its official settings page recommends H.264 bitrates of 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps; recommended ranges vary by codec and resolution. YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP, and advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” Review the full, current guidance in YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
When estimating cloud capacity or transfer, match the selected resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate to the stream you actually intend to send. A cloud location can provide its own uplink for output, but it cannot improve the quality of a live source before that source reaches the cloud.
