But the diagonal measurement alone does not tell you how sharp text will look, how much of a page will fit, or how much screen a video will use. Those depend on the exact model, its resolution and aspect ratio, app layout, and your preferred text size.
What a 9.7-inch screen measurement tells you
The 9.7 inches describe the display’s diagonal, not its width, height, sharpness, or usable space in a particular app. Two tablets with the same diagonal can have different resolutions and pixel densities, so they may render text differently.

For example, Apple lists the iPad Pro (9.7-inch) with a 2048-by-1536-pixel display at 264 pixels per inch (ppi). Apple’s original iPad specifications list a 9.7-inch display at 1024 by 768 pixels and 132 ppi. These are specifications for two historical Apple models, not a description of every 9.7-inch tablet. Apple’s iPad Pro (9.7-inch) technical specifications and original iPad technical specifications show why it is important to compare exact models rather than screen labels.
How it works for reading
A 9.7-inch tablet can work for ebooks, articles, and documents. Whether it feels comfortable depends partly on how large you set the text and how much content you want visible at once. Increasing text size can make reading easier, but fewer words will fit on the screen. A larger tablet may suit you better if you regularly use large text or prefer to see more of a page without scrolling.

- Front 1.2MP FaceTime HD Camera Rear 8MP Camera
- Apple Pencil Support Night Shift | Touch ID Sensor
Screen sharpness is a separate consideration from physical size. The difference between the two Apple examples above—264 ppi on the iPad Pro (9.7-inch) and 132 ppi on the original iPad—means the same diagonal does not guarantee the same level of detail.
How it works for video
A 9.7-inch diagonal provides a portable viewing surface, but a video may not fill it. The iPad Pro (9.7-inch)’s 2048-by-1536-pixel display has a 4:3 aspect ratio. Widescreen video shown without cropping will therefore leave unused screen area rather than filling the display. This follows from the display’s dimensions; the exact appearance depends on the video and playback software. Apple lists the iPad Pro’s display specifications.

How it works for web browsing
A 9.7-inch tablet gives you more physical display area than a phone-sized screen and less than a larger tablet. In portrait orientation, Apple’s developer reference lists the iPad Pro (9.7-inch) screen as 768 by 1024 logical points, alongside its 1536-by-2048-pixel native resolution. A website’s design, browser zoom, screen orientation, and your preferences all affect how roomy a page feels. Apple’s Layout guidance describes the logical screen dimensions.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf you often read pages with dense layouts or want more content visible at once, a larger tablet may be more comfortable. A 9.7-inch model is the smaller, more portable option. Apple’s iPad comparison page lists 9.7-inch and larger models; this size trade-off is a practical inference from their dimensions, not a comparative user test.

What to compare before choosing a model
- Resolution and pixel density: Check the exact model’s specifications if sharp text matters to you.
- Aspect ratio: Consider whether you mostly watch widescreen video, read pages, or switch between both.
- Text and page layout: Think about the font size you prefer and how much scrolling you are willing to do.
- Dimensions and weight: Apple lists the iPad Pro (9.7-inch) at 9.4 by 6.6 inches and 0.96 pound for the Wi-Fi model. Treat those as specifications for that model and configuration, not all 9.7-inch tablets. Apple’s technical specifications provide the details.
- Condition and software needs: If considering a used or refurbished tablet, check its condition and whether it supports the apps and updates you need. Current software-support status is not established for the specific historical examples cited here.
