Is 64GB Enough to Run LLMs Locally? What You Can Expect

64GB can run many local LLMs and may fit some 70B models at 4-bit quantization, but memory overhead, context length, hardware and speed all matter.

Usually, yes for local inference—but not every model or workload. With 64GB of memory, many smaller models are practical, and some 70B models can fit when they use 4-bit quantization. Whether a particular setup works depends on memory available after the operating system and runtime, the exact model file, context length, and whether the computer uses unified memory or a separate graphics card. Loading a model is also not the same as getting useful generation speed.

What can 64GB run?

Think of 64GB as a useful capacity, not a model-size guarantee. A model’s parameter count alone does not determine how much memory it needs: its architecture, quantization, runtime, context length, and other active applications all matter.

As a broad vendor rule of thumb, Ollama’s Llama 2 library says that 70B models generally require at least 64GB of RAM. The same page gives general minimums of 8GB for 7B models and 16GB for 13B models, and says Ollama uses 4-bit quantization by default. These are general recommendations for that library, not guarantees for every model or configuration. Ollama’s Llama 2 library guidance

Why a 70B model may fit

Quantization reduces the memory used by model weights by representing them with fewer bits. In its example table, the llama.cpp project lists a 70B Q4_K_M model at 43.1 GB, compared with 280.9 GB for the original full-precision example. Those are specific model-format figures, not a universal size formula. llama.cpp quantization examples

A 43.1 GB weight file leaves less than the nominal 64GB for everything else. The runtime, context/KV cache, operating system, and open programs also need memory. So the example shows why a quantized 70B model can be possible, not that it will run comfortably on every machine labelled 64GB.

Will a 70B model run well on 64GB?

It may load if the model’s quantized weights and the rest of the workload fit in available memory. It may still be slow, particularly if the hardware has limited memory bandwidth or the runtime cannot use the GPU effectively. There is no reliable speed figure for a generic “64GB computer”: chip or GPU, backend, model architecture, quantization, and prompt workload all affect performance.

Before choosing a model, check its exact quantized file size and the inference runtime’s memory reporting. Start with a moderate context length, close memory-heavy applications, and leave headroom rather than planning to use nearly all installed memory for weights. Ollama specifically suggests trying Q4 quantization or closing memory-heavy programs if higher quantization levels cause memory problems. Ollama’s Llama 2 library guidance

Does 64GB mean the same thing on a Mac and a PC?

No. Apple Silicon uses unified memory shared by the CPU and GPU. A Mac’s 64GB unified-memory pool is not entirely available to model weights because macOS and other workloads use part of it too. A discrete-GPU PC has separate system RAM and GPU VRAM: 64GB of system RAM does not give the graphics card 64GB of VRAM.

Some inference runtimes can distribute work between CPU and GPU, but the memory behavior and performance depend on the software and its settings. A 64GB unified-memory Mac and a PC with 64GB system RAM therefore are not interchangeable specifications for local inference. llama.cpp community discussion of Apple Silicon unified memory

How to check whether a particular model fits

  1. Identify the exact model and file. Record its family, parameter count, quantization, and download size; do not estimate from the parameter count alone.
  2. Check how memory is allocated on your computer. On Apple Silicon, consider the shared unified-memory pool. On a PC with a discrete GPU, check VRAM separately from system RAM.
  3. Allow for the rest of the workload. The operating system, runtime, context/KV cache, and other applications use memory in addition to the weights. The amount varies by model and settings.
  4. Try a moderate context length first. Longer context adds memory demand. Increase it only after checking the runtime’s reported memory use and confirming the system remains within its available capacity.
  5. Adjust if it does not fit or perform acceptably. Try a smaller or more heavily quantized model, close other applications, reduce context length, or change runtime settings. If the workload still spills between CPU and GPU or exceeds available memory, a system with a different memory configuration may be a better match.

Is 64GB enough for training?

This guidance is about local inference—running a model that has already been trained—not training arbitrary large models. A 64GB specification by itself does not establish that a machine can train a large model; training has different memory and hardware demands.

What should you prioritize when choosing a 64GB system?

For a local-model workload, capacity is only one part of the decision. Compare the exact model configuration and available memory with the speed and practical constraints you need:

  • Usable memory: distinguish unified memory from system RAM and GPU VRAM, and account for capacity used by the operating system and other work.
  • Model and context: check the quantized model file and the context length you actually expect to use.
  • Performance: consider chip or GPU capability, memory bandwidth, supported inference backend, and prompt-processing and generation performance. A benchmark is useful only when its hardware, model and quantization, runtime version, context, and measurement method match your needs.
  • Practical limits: weigh cost, upgradeability, power and noise, operating-system compatibility, and whether your use case needs inference or training.
