Yes, 4GB of RAM can handle light Linux browsing and office work, but it is a tight limit rather than a comfortable all-purpose setup. A few browser tabs and ordinary documents may be manageable; many tabs or several demanding apps at once can push the system beyond what this memory budget comfortably supports. Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS specifies 6GB for a comfortable experience, so 4GB is below its current guidance.
What 4GB can realistically handle
For basic use—email, routine websites, a modest number of browser tabs, and ordinary office documents—4GB may be workable, especially if you keep the number of open apps under control. That is a cautious expectation, not a guarantee: the available sources do not report a controlled test of a particular 4GB computer.

Memory is shared by the Linux desktop, browser, websites, documents, and background services. The machine’s age, CPU, storage, graphics, desktop environment, and the size of the pages and documents also affect the experience. Integrated graphics may use system memory, but the available sources do not quantify that effect for a particular computer.

| Software or guidance | Published memory figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Ubuntu Desktop 26.04 LTS | 6GB minimum for a comfortable experience | Ubuntu also specifies a 2GHz dual-core processor or better and 25GB of free storage. Its release notes say lower-spec systems may still install Ubuntu Desktop and recommend an official flavor such as Xubuntu or Lubuntu for systems with 2GB RAM or more. This guidance applies to Ubuntu and its flavors, not every Linux distribution. Ubuntu Desktop requirements and download |
| Firefox 143.0 | 1GB for 32-bit; 2GB for 64-bit recommended | These are browser requirements, not a total-system target for a desktop with multiple tabs and other apps open. Mozilla notes Linux distributors may package Firefox with different requirements. Mozilla Firefox 143.0 system requirements |
| LibreOffice for Linux | 256MB; 512MB recommended | This is an application prerequisite, not a benchmark or a comfortable memory target for the complete computer. The Document Foundation’s system requirements |
The figures are not directly comparable: Ubuntu’s figure is for a comfortable desktop experience, while Firefox and LibreOffice list requirements for individual applications. They do not show how a specific 4GB machine performs when those applications and modern websites are used together.

Should you choose Ubuntu or a lighter flavor?
If you specifically want the standard Ubuntu Desktop, treat its 6GB comfortable-experience guidance as a reason to expect compromises at 4GB—not as proof Ubuntu cannot run. Ubuntu says lower-spec systems can install its desktop, and recommends considering an official flavor such as Xubuntu or Lubuntu in that situation. The available guidance does not establish a benchmark ranking among flavors, so choose based on the interface you prefer and whether your required apps and peripherals work.
Before installing, check compatibility for the exact computer. Ubuntu advises trying the desktop or checking certified hardware when compatibility is uncertain. Ubuntu Certified hardware

Ways to decide what to do with a 4GB computer
- Already own it and need light use: Try a suitable Linux desktop with a restrained tab count, and avoid keeping several demanding applications open together.
- Buying a computer for standard Ubuntu: Prefer a machine that meets Ubuntu 26.04’s 6GB comfortable-experience memory guidance, while checking its processor, free storage, and device compatibility too.
- Considering a RAM upgrade: Look up the exact model’s manual or manufacturer specifications first. Confirm the supported memory type, maximum capacity, and whether memory is replaceable; without the model, no specific module or capacity can be recommended.
- Thinking about swap: Treat it as a safety valve rather than a substitute for RAM. The cited requirements do not establish that adding swap makes browsing and office work feel responsive.
If you are installing Linux, keep the USB requirement separate
Ubuntu’s 24.04 installation tutorial recommends a USB flash drive of 8GB or larger for creating an installer and warns that creating it erases the drive. Back up its contents first. This is an installation requirement, not a way to improve runtime performance. Ubuntu 24.04 desktop installation tutorial
