To verify what a TV or monitor can actually do, check three separate things: its native panel refresh rate, the resolution and refresh rates accepted by the input you plan to use, and the frame rate your source device can produce. A 120 Hz panel can display repeated or interpolated frames; it cannot turn a 60 fps game into one rendered at 120 fps.
What does 120 Hz mean?
A 120 Hz display refreshes its image 120 times per second. But a specification or advertisement using “120 Hz” may be referring to different capabilities:

- Native panel refresh: how frequently the panel itself can refresh.
- Input signal support: the resolution-and-refresh combinations the display accepts through a particular port, such as 3840 × 2160 at 120 Hz.
- Variable refresh rate: a range of refresh rates that can change in response to a compatible source.
- Motion processing: processing that estimates or inserts intermediate frames. It does not establish that the panel accepts a 120 Hz signal or that the source rendered 120 distinct frames per second.
There is no universal formal definition or certification for “true 120 Hz” established by the available manufacturer documentation. Treat the phrase as a prompt to find out which of these capabilities is meant, rather than as a specification in its own right.

- Identify the exact model and size. Check the complete model code, screen size, and sales region. A series-level claim may not describe every size or regional version.
- Find the panel’s native refresh specification. Look for “native refresh rate,” “panel refresh rate,” or an equivalent term in the manufacturer’s specifications. A “motion rate,” “effective refresh” or interpolation feature alone does not establish native panel refresh.
- Confirm the input mode you need. Look for resolution and refresh rate stated together, such as 3840 × 2160 at 120 Hz. Check which port supports the mode and any footnotes on input settings, bit depth, or firmware.
- Check the source device. The GPU or console must be able to render or output the frame rate and resolution you want; a capable display does not guarantee 120 fps.
- Verify the full connection and settings. Check the source output, display port, cable, and selected resolution and refresh rate. Samsung recommends an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable for 4K at 120 FPS in its guidance for an NVIDIA RTX 40 Series PC and compatible Samsung TVs, and notes that HDMI 2.1 support may be limited to a particular port on some models (Samsung support guidance). Philips likewise notes that the graphics card affects the achievable resolution and refresh rate (Philips monitor manual).
- Recheck current documentation before buying. Product specifications can vary by model year, size, region, input, and firmware.
A cable can help a compatible source and display carry the selected signal; it cannot make a 60 Hz panel accept native 120 Hz.

Why the exact model and input matter
Manufacturer specifications show why a single headline number is not enough. Sony’s US specification for the KD-43X85K lists a 120 Hz panel refresh and separately enumerates supported HDMI formats, including 3840 × 2160p at 120 Hz (Sony KD-43X85K specifications). Those separate entries make it possible to check both the panel and the required input mode.
Size can matter even within one product family. LG Canada’s QNED85 information lists a native 120 Hz rate across the QNED85 family, but identifies the 86-, 75-, and 65-inch versions as supporting up to 144 Hz, while the 55- and 50-inch versions are listed at 120 Hz. The page also specifies four HDMI 2.1 inputs supporting 4K at 120 Hz (LG Canada QNED85 specifications). Confirm the entry for the exact size and SKU you are considering.

A monitor’s maximum refresh can also differ from the mode you care about. ASUS describes the TUF Gaming VG28UQL1A as a 144 Hz 4K monitor and separately advertises native 4K at 120 Hz over HDMI 2.1 with full 48 Gbps bandwidth (ASUS TUF Gaming VG28UQL1A). For a 4K/120 setup, check that specific mode rather than relying only on the maximum refresh number.
How to read “120 Hz MEMC” claims
MEMC and similar motion-processing claims describe processing, not proof of native panel frequency or a 120 Hz input. Xiaomi’s TV Max 100 page calls the display’s refresh rate 120 Hz, describes “4K 120Hz MEMC” frame interpolation, and separately claims HDMI 2.1 transmission of 4K 120 Hz images (Xiaomi TV Max 100 product page). Read those as distinct claims: interpolation does not by itself establish input support, so check the supported signal formats and ports.

Whether a particular advertisement is legally misleading cannot be determined from the phrase alone. The practical question is what the manufacturer specifies for the panel and the input mode, not whether a motion-processing label uses the number 120.

- Native panel rate: Is the panel explicitly listed as native 120 Hz or higher?
- Resolution-and-refresh modes: Does it accept the combination you need, such as 4K at 120 Hz?
- Port availability: Which inputs support that mode, and are there port-specific settings or limitations?
- Gaming features: If relevant, check VRR range and compatibility separately.
- Source and connection: Confirm that the console or PC, display input, cable, and settings support the same mode.
- Exact variant: Match model code, screen size, region, and any applicable firmware notes.
A Philips monitor manual, for example, lists 3840 × 2160 at 120 Hz for HDMI 2.1 and DisplayPort 1.4 at both 10-bit and 8-bit entries, while noting that graphics-card capability affects the available resolution and refresh (Philips monitor manual). This is why checking only a display’s panel specification—or only a source’s output claim—can leave out a limiting part of the setup.
