A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11For messaging, browsing, maps and moderate social-media use, 1.5 GB a day can be enough for many people. Regular video streaming, video calls, large downloads or laptop tethering can use it quickly. Your answer depends on how you use mobile data, how often you have Wi-Fi, and what your carrier does when you reach the daily limit.
What 1.5 GB per day adds up to
A 1.5 GB daily allowance is about 45 GB over 30 days if you use the full allowance each day. That conversion helps put the plan in perspective, but it does not mean every user will need or use that much.

For context, a 2023 World Bank report discusses two different monthly per-capita package benchmarks: 1.5 GB, cited to the International Telecommunication Union as a basic-needs package, and 6 GB, cited to Chen and Minges as an expanded package that includes entertainment such as social media and video streaming. These development-context benchmarks are not consumer recommendations or measures of what a particular person uses. Read the World Bank report.

There is no dependable universal data rate for an app or activity: usage changes with video quality, content, app version, background activity and individual behavior. The examples below are useful for gauging the impact of habits, not guarantees for your own phone.

| Use pattern | What the available figures suggest | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Messaging, browsing and maps | The cited sources do not establish a universal data total for these activities. | Whether they fit comfortably depends on how much you use them and what runs in the background. |
| Social media for one hour per day | JT Global estimates 4.5 GB per month. | This is the provider’s illustration; the page does not state a publication year, and actual use varies. |
| SD video streaming for one hour per day | JT Global estimates 21 GB per month. | This is a provider illustration, not a guaranteed rate for every streaming service or setting. The page does not state a publication year. |
| Higher-quality video | YouTube says higher picture quality uses more data than lower-quality choices. | Data use depends on the selected quality and playback. YouTube explains its video-quality settings. |
Video is the biggest swing factor
Video can make the difference between a comfortable allowance and one that runs out early. YouTube’s help page notes that higher picture quality uses more data and that videos may take longer to start or buffer more often. Choosing Data saver or selecting a lower resolution can reduce use compared with higher picture quality, though the amount saved varies.
JT Global’s estimates—4.5 GB per month for one hour a day of social media and 21 GB per month for one hour a day of SD video—give examples of how recurring daily activity accumulates. They are not cross-app standards, and video quality, content and usage patterns differ.

Calls, hotspot use and Wi-Fi change the answer
- Video calls: Frequent calls add another data-heavy activity; the cited sources do not establish a universal per-hour rate.
- Hotspot use: A laptop or other connected device may download or stream more than ordinary phone use. Regular tethering makes a 1.5 GB daily cap easier to reach.
- Wi-Fi: Using Wi-Fi for streaming, large downloads and app updates leaves more of the mobile allowance for times you are away from it.
Check what your carrier does at the limit
Reaching a daily allowance does not have the same consequence on every plan. Airtel describes prepaid plans with 1.5 GB of daily data and says speed is reduced after the daily limit is reached. That is an example of one provider’s plan description, not a market-wide rule. Check your own plan for whether data is slowed, cut off, rolled over or charged as extra once you reach the limit. See Airtel’s description of its 1.5 GB daily plans.
How to check your actual mobile-data use
- On an iPhone or iPad, open Settings → Cellular (or Mobile Data).
- Review the usage listed for each app to see which ones are using cellular data.
- Turn cellular access off for apps you do not want using mobile data. You can also reset usage statistics when you start tracking a new period.
- Compare the device’s tracking period with your carrier’s billing or daily allowance period. Apple says to contact your carrier for the most accurate current-period usage information.
Apple’s instructions cover per-app usage and cellular-data controls; exact labels can vary by device or region. See Apple’s instructions for using cellular data.

Ways to make 1.5 GB last longer
- Use YouTube’s Data saver option or choose a lower resolution when watching over cellular data.
- Save large downloads and media transfers for Wi-Fi when it is available.
- Use your phone’s per-app cellular controls to restrict apps that do not need mobile access.
- Check your carrier’s usage information during the day if your plan has a daily cap, and note what happens after that cap is reached.
