An IRONMAN full-distance triathlon covers 140.6 miles (226 km); an IRONMAN 70.3, often called a Half Ironman, covers 70.3 miles (113 km). Each leg of the 70.3 is half the corresponding full-distance leg. Training time depends on your current fitness, available weekly time, experience, and goals—not distance alone. IRONMAN says a regular build from scratch may take 12 months, but neither that duration nor a standard recovery timeline applies to everyone.
How long is an IRONMAN 70.3 compared with a full IRONMAN?
The name 70.3 refers to the race’s total distance in miles. The figures below are IRONMAN’s published race distances; kilometre totals are rounded. Individual course layouts and conditions can differ, so check the details for your event.

| Race distance | Swim | Bike | Run | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Full-distance IRONMAN | 2.4 mi (3.8 km) | 112 mi (180 km) | 26.2 mi (42.2 km) | 140.6 mi (226 km) |
| IRONMAN 70.3 | 1.2 mi (1.9 km) | 56 mi (90 km) | 13.1 mi (21.1 km) | 70.3 mi (113 km) |
By distance, each 70.3 leg is half its full-distance counterpart. That makes the 70.3 shorter, but it is still a multi-discipline endurance race requiring preparation across swimming, cycling, and running.
How much training does each distance require?
There is no universal weekly-hours prescription established here for either distance, and distance alone does not determine how long you need to prepare. IRONMAN says preparation depends on an athlete’s current fitness, weekly time available, and intended workout volume. It notes that a regular build from scratch may take 12 months; this is conditional guidance, not a requirement or guarantee for every athlete. (IRONMAN: About IRONMAN)

When judging what preparation may involve for you, consider:
- Starting fitness and endurance history: A person with recent, consistent endurance training starts from a different place than someone new to structured training.
- Weekly availability: The time you can reliably devote to swimming, biking, running, and recovery affects the shape and pace of a build.
- Your goal: Preparing to finish and preparing to pursue a particular performance are different aims; choose a plan that reflects yours.
- Event course and conditions: Review the course and relevant conditions for your chosen race rather than assuming every event presents the same demands.
Preparing for a 70.3
IRONMAN’s 70.3 preparation information recommends a structured approach and frames its checklist around fitness assessment, endurance building, and race-day strategy. Use those areas to organize preparation, then adapt the plan to your background and event. (IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship pre-race information)

Preparing for a full distance
A full-distance race has twice the listed distance in each discipline as a 70.3, but that does not translate into a simple formula for doubling training time. Starting point, available hours, intended workout volume, and race goals all matter. The 12-month figure is IRONMAN’s broad estimate for a regular build from scratch, not a personalized plan.

Is recovery longer after a full IRONMAN?
It is reasonable to expect recovery needs to differ among athletes and races, but the official materials reviewed do not set a universal number of recovery days for either distance or provide a comparative clinical timeline. IRONMAN’s recovery page promotes rest and features recovery products and modalities; it does not establish that a device, compression garment, or nutrition product will speed recovery by a specific amount. Plan recovery around your own response and, if you need individualized guidance, seek advice from a qualified health professional. Do not treat a product feature or partner listing as a recovery timetable.

Open-water conditions can make a wetsuit relevant, but it is not a universal requirement. A 2024 IRONMAN 70.3 Weymouth athlete guide advised practicing open-water conditions—including water temperature and using a wetsuit if needed—checking fit, and not racing in equipment you have not trained with. That is event-specific guidance, so consult the current athlete guide for your race rather than relying on an older guide as a universal rule. (2024 IRONMAN 70.3 Weymouth Athlete Guide)
