There is no single cutoff schedule or transition procedure that applies to every IRONMAN race. Your event’s current athlete guide sets the official timing basis, intermediate checkpoints, transition closures, and equipment rules. As a planning reference, one IRONMAN page lists 17 hours for a full-distance event and 8 hours 30 minutes for a 70.3, while a 2024 Chattanooga guide sets a different full-distance total of 16 hours 30 minutes.
What are the IRONMAN cutoff times?
Cutoffs are event-specific, and a race can impose several: a swim limit, a cumulative limit through the bike, and a total event limit. Intermediate course checkpoints may apply as well. Missing any required cutoff can end an athlete’s race even if the overall finish deadline has not passed.

These official event examples show why one figure should not be treated as universal:
| Event source and distance | Swim cutoff | Through bike (swim + T1 + bike) | Total cutoff |
|---|---|---|---|
| IRONMAN 70.3 Alghero race-week page, 70.3 | 1 hour 10 minutes | 5 hours 30 minutes | 8 hours 30 minutes |
| IRONMAN 70.3 Alghero race-week page, full distance | 2 hours 20 minutes | 10 hours | 17 hours |
| IRONMAN Chattanooga 2024 athlete guide, full distance | Separate swim limit; exact time not stated in the cited guide summary | Separate bike limit and intermediate bike checkpoints; exact cumulative time not stated here | 16 hours 30 minutes |
The Alghero examples appear on IRONMAN’s race-week cutoff page; the Chattanooga total and its checkpoint provisions are in the 2024 athlete guide. The Chattanooga guide measures its overall cutoff from the swim-start timing mat and says transitions and aid-station stops count toward elapsed time. The cited guide summary does not provide the separate swim or bike cutoff durations, so consult the guide itself for those exact values.

Check what starts the clock
Do not assume every race counts from the starting gun or uses the same reference point. A 2025 IRONMAN 70.3 Tours guide says times are calculated from each athlete’s individual start time, not the gun start. Other schedules can refer to a last-athlete-entering-the-water point or use time-of-day checkpoints. Follow the basis specified in your current guide.
The Tours guide also says officials may remove an athlete if, based on location, time, and average speed, they determine the athlete cannot finish a discipline before its cutoff. Passing the final finish deadline is not the only condition that matters.

How long do you have to finish an IRONMAN or 70.3?
Use the total cutoff published for your particular race, not a distance-wide promise. The Alghero race-week page gives examples of 17 hours for full distance and 8 hours 30 minutes for 70.3; Chattanooga’s 2024 full-distance guide gives 16 hours 30 minutes. Race timing basis, course checkpoints, and event procedures can change the practical deadline for an athlete on course.

What happens in T1 and T2?
- T1 is the transition from swim to bike.
- T2 is the transition from bike to run.
Transition layouts and bag procedures vary by event. In the 2025 Tours guide’s example, athletes collect the assigned bag, change, return gear to the designated bag location, take their bike, and head to the transition exit. The guide requires the helmet chin strap to be closed before riding and says athletes must wait until after the marked bike mount line before getting on the bike. Your own event’s map and instructions take precedence.
Transition areas may close after a discipline cutoff. In the 2024 Chattanooga full-distance guide, T1 closes 20 minutes after the swim cutoff and T2 closes 10 minutes after the bike cutoff. Those intervals are Chattanooga-specific examples, not standard allowances for every event.

Can I wear a wetsuit in an IRONMAN?
Wetsuit eligibility depends on water conditions and the rules for your specific event and season. Under the 2025 Tours guide’s stated rules, wetsuits may be worn at water temperatures up to and including 24.6°C and are mandatory below 16°C. These thresholds should not be assumed to apply to every race; check the current guide and rules for your event.

It permits goggles or facemasks but prohibits fins, gloves, paddles, pull buoys and other flotation devices, and snorkels. It says athletes must not wear a race bib during the swim. Verify each detail against your current event materials.

What basic equipment and transition rules matter?
- Fasten your bike helmet before riding; the cited 2025 Tours guide specifically requires the chin strap closed.
- Do not mount until you have passed the marked mount line at the bike-park exit, as directed by that guide.
- Use only swim equipment allowed by your event rules; swim aids such as fins, paddles, and flotation devices are prohibited under the Tours guide example.
- Follow the assigned bag, transition map, and gear-return process for your race rather than assuming another event’s layout.
IRONMAN states that its 2026 Competition Rules take effect for events after March 2, 2026. The official rules page identifies updates involving professional-athlete bike draft zones, equipment specifications, and Para Open Division terminology, and links to the full rules, a modifications summary, and FAQs. Consult those primary documents for exact provisions rather than relying on a short summary.
What happens if I miss an IRONMAN cutoff?
A missed swim, bike, or intermediate cutoff can end your race; officials may remove athletes when they determine a discipline cannot be completed on time. The applicable event guide defines the cutoff schedule and what happens to transition access, so do not continue on the assumption that the total finish deadline is the only limit.
Relay teams
Relay consequences can apply to the whole team. The IRONMAN 70.3 Nice FAQ says relay members exchange the timing chip in the relay zone and that if a swimmer or cyclist misses the official cutoff, the entire team is recorded DNF and may not continue. It also says relay teams follow the same cutoffs as individual athletes. This is Nice event guidance; check the current relay instructions for your race.
