The action is planned as part of a public-service pay dispute; as of 3 October, it had not yet taken place.
When the stoppage is scheduled
IFUT says members will withdraw their labour for one hour, from 12 noon to 1 p.m. on 5 October. The date is World Teachers’ Day. The Irish Examiner reported that members planned to gather at prominent campus locations to discuss the dispute and show support. Local arrangements are being issued by IFUT branches, so the union’s local branch is the appropriate source for a particular campus location.
IFUT has also announced a 24-hour strike for Wednesday, 14 October, and a further 24-hour strike for Wednesday, 21 October, if necessary. These remain planned actions subject to developments in the dispute. IFUT’s action notice sets out the announced schedule.
What the pay dispute is about
IFUT says the Public Service Agreement 2024–2026 expired on 30 June and that no successor agreement or agreed pay provision covers the rest of 2026. The union’s stated claims include a pay settlement for July through December 2026, delivery of outstanding local-bargaining commitments, and staff having a say in changes that affect their work. These are IFUT’s account of the dispute and its demands, not an independently determined settlement position. The union’s explanation outlines its claims.

How members voted and how the sides describe negotiations
IFUT says 93% of members who voted in its public-service ballot backed industrial action. The figure is the union’s reported result; an independent official count is not established in the available reporting. In its 22 September ballot announcement, IFUT General Secretary Frank Jones called the result “an exceptionally strong and democratic mandate” and said members were unwilling to see pay and living standards eroded without a credible Government proposal. IFUT’s ballot announcement gives the union’s result and statement.
RTÉ reported that unions said there was “no basis” to enter negotiations under the existing framework because they had no indication that cost-of-living concerns would be addressed at the outset. RTÉ also reported Minister Jack Chambers’s criticism of the action and his statement that the Government was willing to engage directly or through the Workplace Relations Commission. These are the reported positions of the unions and the Minister; they do not, by themselves, resolve what has or has not been offered in negotiations. RTÉ’s report covers both positions.

What staff and students should expect
The national announcement does not establish the precise effect at each campus. Munster Technological University said on 2 October that industrial action by its staff had begun on 30 September and was expected to continue for the foreseeable future, potentially disrupting some university services. That update applies to MTU; it does not establish disruption levels at other institutions or predict the effect of the 5 October stoppage. MTU’s update is institution-specific.
For practical arrangements, check notices from your university and the relevant IFUT branch. The scheduled one-hour stoppage and the later strikes were still future plans as of 3 October 2026; actual participation, local service effects, further negotiations and whether the later actions proceed were not yet established.
