Texas State Sen. Angela Paxton argued in a September 2026 speech that Republican voters should weigh party values and control of a U.S. Senate seat against their dissatisfaction with candidates. The line later highlighted by CNN was “even if we’re mad at them.” Calling that a demand to put loyalty over character is an interpretation of her remarks: the reported excerpts do not name Ken Paxton or say that character does not matter.
What Angela Paxton said
Paxton spoke to more than 100 board members at a ticketed Texas Federation of Republican Women meeting in Round Rock on September 18, 2026. The Texas Tribune, in a report reproduced by Houston Public Media, described the speech as “The Elephant in the Room.” CNN aired an excerpt on September 28.
In CNN’s transcript, Paxton said: “The reality is, while we are the party of values, we have some vulnerabilities on our ballot. I’ll be honest with you. I think Republican women will decide this election because some of those vulnerabilities, I think, have been particularly alienating to women. We have more control over that seat and the future when we control the seat, when it’s still in the family, even if we’re mad at it.”
The Texas Tribune reported a longer excerpt in which Paxton said, “It’s not the people — it’s the seat,” and warned that losing the seat to “the other team” would make the “nuances” Republicans hoped to address with a candidate less consequential. The outlet said a video clip was posted to Facebook by State Republican Executive Committee member Cheryl Thompson-Draper and the DeWitt County GOP; the excerpts here reflect the outlets’ reporting and transcript.

Was she telling voters to put party control ahead of candidate concerns?
That is a fair summary of the political argument she made: retaining the seat and advancing party values, she said, could matter more to the party’s future than anger at a particular candidate. She also identified vulnerabilities on the Republican ballot and said Republican women could decide the election.
But “loyalty over character” is not a verbatim statement from the excerpts. Paxton did not name Ken Paxton in the reported remarks, and the excerpts do not show her explicitly saying voters should ignore character. The distinction matters: her speech framed a choice between dissatisfaction with a candidate and the consequences of losing a seat, rather than setting out a general rule that character is irrelevant.

Why the remarks drew attention in the Texas Senate race
The speech came amid the contest for Texas’s U.S. Senate seat. CNN described Ken Paxton as Texas attorney general and the Republican Senate nominee. The Texas Tribune reported that Angela Paxton had not publicly indicated which candidate she supported in the completed Republican primary between Ken Paxton and John Cornyn.
The outlets also placed the speech against the backdrop of Ken Paxton’s political controversies. The Texas Tribune reported that Angela Paxton filed for divorce in 2025, citing “biblical grounds,” and that her original petition cited adultery. Those are descriptions of the filing as reported by the outlet, not findings established by the speech. CNN noted that the Texas Senate acquitted Ken Paxton after his 2023 impeachment; the impeachment and acquittal are distinct events, and the acquittal should not be mistaken for a finding that no allegations had been made.

What the coverage does—and does not—establish
The reports establish that Angela Paxton made an appeal to Republican women to consider the party’s control of the seat despite candidate-related vulnerabilities. They do not establish that the speech changed voters’ minds, affected the election result, or reflected how voters generally balance party loyalty and character. The reviewed coverage supplies no poll measuring the speech’s effect.
CNN correspondent Arlette Saenz reported that the Senate Leadership Fund had a group running $124 million in advertising to support Paxton in the final stretch. That is a contemporaneous figure reported by CNN, not an independently verified ad-tracking total in the material cited here.
