A receiver in the device detects those pulses and decodes their timing pattern into an instruction, such as changing the channel or adjusting the volume.
How an IR remote control works
- You press a button. The remote’s control circuitry selects the corresponding command.
- An infrared LED sends pulses. The light is invisible to human eyes, and its timed pattern carries the command.
- The remote modulates the signal. Many consumer IR systems place the command pattern on a repeating carrier. NXP describes 30–60 kHz as a typical range for one on-off-keying approach; it also lists receiver examples at 30, 33, 36, 38, 40 and 56 kHz. These are engineering examples, not a universal setting. NXP’s infrared remote-control application note explains the techniques.
- The device receives and filters the light. Its IR receiver helps separate the intended signal from ambient infrared energy, then provides a signal for the device electronics to interpret. Analog Devices’ learning-remote article describes the transmitter and receiver arrangement.
- The device decodes the command. It interprets the pulse timing and carries out the requested action.
How the signal represents a command
The pulses are organized into patterns called marks and spaces. Their timing or transitions encode information, and a complete group of pulses forms a frame. Different protocols use different approaches: NXP describes pulse-distance, pulse-width, pulse-position and Manchester encoding. Adafruit’s guide to IR signals also explains how protocols vary the marks, spaces or transitions.

“IR remote” describes the transmission medium, not one shared command language. Remotes and devices need compatible protocols as well as compatible IR transmission. About 38 kHz is a common carrier example, but it is not mandatory; Adafruit notes that some protocols use frequencies from 36 kHz to 57 kHz.

Generally, the remote’s infrared light must reach the device’s receiver along a direct optical path. An obstruction or pointing the remote away from the receiver can prevent the command from arriving. One For All describes its IR remotes as requiring line of sight. This is a general distinction between the transmission methods, not a range guarantee for every product.

IR, RF and Bluetooth: what is different?
IR sends commands using infrared light. Radio frequency (RF) and Bluetooth use radio communication instead. One For All’s support comparison says RF can work through walls and that its IR remotes cannot operate devices controlled by RF or Bluetooth. Compatibility depends on the specific remote and device; the IR label alone does not mean a remote can control every product.
Will a universal IR remote work with your device?
Only if the device accepts IR and the replacement remote supports its model or command protocol. Before choosing a replacement, check the device model and determine whether its original control method is IR, RF or Bluetooth. A universal IR remote is a suitable category to investigate for an IR-controlled device, but the phrase “universal” does not establish support for a particular television or appliance. A learning remote is another option in principle: it records commands from an existing remote and replays them. Analog Devices describes this design, but code learning by itself does not guarantee compatibility with every protocol or device.
