Apple publishes which iPhone models can install each iOS version and records dated security releases, but the cited Apple guidance does not promise a fixed number of years for every iPhone. Xiaomi says it typically provides security updates for at least two years from a model’s first shipment, while some models may receive three years or longer. For either brand, check the exact model—and distinguish major OS upgrades from security patches.
What “software support” means
A phone can stop receiving major operating-system upgrades before it stops receiving security fixes. Those are separate questions: whether a model can install a newer iOS or Xiaomi-listed OS version, and whether its maker continues to issue security updates for it.

Security updates address vulnerabilities and other security improvements; an installed OS version alone does not tell you whether the phone is still receiving them. Apple’s dated security-release records include releases for different iOS generations. Xiaomi’s model data separately lists OS versions and security-update end-of-life information.
How long do iPhones get updates?
Apple’s cited official pages do not state one fixed support duration for all iPhones. Instead, use Apple’s iOS 27 compatibility guide to see which models are listed for that major iOS version, and consult its security-release records to check dated updates, including releases for older iOS generations. Eligibility for a major iOS release and the availability of security fixes are not interchangeable.

Check an iPhone
- Open Settings > General > About to identify the iPhone model.
- Open Settings > General > Software Update to see the update available to that device.
- Compare the model with Apple’s current compatibility guide, then check the security-release record for updates to the relevant iOS version.
How long do Xiaomi phones get updates?
Xiaomi’s general smartphone policy says it typically maintains security updates for at least two years after the first shipment of a model. It adds that some models may receive three years or longer, depending on actual conditions. The policy covers Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO smartphones, but it is not a promise that every model receives the same duration.
The two-year period is counted from first shipment, not from the date an individual customer buys the phone. A model bought later may therefore have less remaining support than a newly launched one. Xiaomi directs users to its model-level information for the more specific answer.

Check a Xiaomi, Redmi, or POCO phone
- Identify the exact model and regional variant of the phone.
- Search for that model in the Xiaomi Security Center.
- Read the listed OS versions and security-update EOL separately. Note the update frequency if one is shown; a cadence is not a promise that every patch arrives on the same date in every region.
Xiaomi says products on its end-of-life list no longer receive maintained software or firmware updates. Its policy also allows that a necessary fix may still be supplied after EOL for a very serious vulnerability; that possibility is not ongoing support.

How to compare the two brands before you buy
Compare the exact models using the support information available for each—not a brand-wide estimate. The useful measures are the model’s major-OS eligibility, security-update end date where published, and stated update cadence.

Support pages can change. When comparing phones, record the date you checked and revisit the manufacturer’s live listing before relying on an end date or future OS version.

If a model no longer receives maintained security updates, do not treat continued app compatibility or the ability to install its last major OS as proof that it remains patched. Check the manufacturer’s dated release information and model EOL listing. For Xiaomi, a possible exceptional fix for a very serious vulnerability does not replace routine updates. Apple’s security guidance says, “Keeping your software up to date is the single most important thing you can do to maintain the security of your Apple products.” Apple security releases
