It varies by manufacturer and exact model. Google promises Pixel 8 and later seven years of operating-system and security updates; Samsung makes a seven-generation OS-upgrade and seven-year security-update commitment for the Galaxy S26 series. Apple’s current iOS 26 compatibility list covers iPhone 11 and later families and iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later, but that list is not a fixed-duration promise for every iPhone.
How the update policies compare
| Phone or model group | Published support information | What the figure means |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 11 and later families; iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later | Apple lists these models as compatible with iOS 26. | A current compatibility snapshot, not a stated number of future update years. Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility list |
| Google Pixel 8 and later | Seven years of OS and security updates, counted from first availability on the Google Store in the US. | A published support period for the named Pixel models. Google’s Pixel update policy |
| Google Pixel 6 and 7 families; original Pixel Fold | Five years of OS and security updates, counted from first availability on the Google Store in the US. | Google’s policy varies by generation. Pixel 5a and older are listed as no longer receiving Android version or security updates. Google’s Pixel update policy |
| Samsung Galaxy S26 series | Seven generations of OS upgrades and seven years of security updates, counted from global launch. | The commitment applies to the S26 series, not every Galaxy phone. Samsung says availability and timing can vary by model, network provider, and market. Samsung’s S26 announcement |
These figures are not perfectly like-for-like: Apple’s entry shows which devices run the current iOS version, while Google and Samsung state support periods for specific model groups. They do not establish a definitive winner across every iPhone and Android phone.

What counts as a software update?
Major operating-system upgrades
These bring a new major OS version and its features. Google describes its Pixel commitment as OS updates; Samsung states a number of OS-upgrade generations. Apple’s iOS compatibility list tells you whether a model supports iOS 26 now, not how many future major releases it will receive.
Security updates
Security patches address vulnerabilities and can continue on a different schedule from major feature releases. Google’s stated Pixel periods cover both OS and security updates. Samsung separately specifies seven OS-upgrade generations and seven years of security updates for the S26 series. Check the exact policy rather than assuming that a feature-upgrade count and a security-update period are interchangeable.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
When does the support clock start?
The start date matters, especially when buying a phone that has already been on sale. Google counts the cited Pixel periods from when each device first became available on the Google Store in the US. Samsung counts the S26 commitment from global launch. A second-hand buyer therefore gets only the remaining portion of the original support period, not a fresh term beginning on the purchase date.
Why Android support depends on the exact phone
Android is an operating system used across phones from multiple manufacturers; it does not have one universal support term. Google directs owners of other Android devices to contact the manufacturer or carrier for update information. Even within Samsung’s lineup, the S26 commitment should not be applied to every Galaxy model. Samsung’s 2022 announcement, for example, described up to four generations of One UI and Android OS upgrades and up to five years of security updates for select Galaxy devices—a different, model- and generation-specific policy, not the S26 promise. Samsung’s 2022 policy announcement

Updates may arrive at different times
A published support period does not guarantee that every update reaches every device on the same day. Google says Pixel updates roll out gradually and can depend on carrier and device. Samsung says availability and timing vary by device model, network provider, and market. Google’s Pixel update policy and Samsung Mobile Security describe these qualifications.
How to check a phone before buying
- Identify the exact model. A brand name or operating system is not enough; support can differ between generations and product tiers.
- Find the manufacturer’s policy for that model. For Pixel, use Google’s update-policy page. For other Android phones, check the manufacturer and, where relevant, the carrier. For iPhone, verify whether the model appears on Apple’s current iOS compatibility list and check its current security-update status.
- Read what the commitment covers. Distinguish major OS upgrades from security patches; one number may not describe both.
- Check the clock’s starting point. Note whether the period begins at first sale in a particular market, global launch, or another stated date.
- For a used or refurbished phone, estimate the remaining support. Start with the original support-clock date, not your purchase date, and confirm the phone’s latest installed security update.
- Allow for delivery differences. Carrier, market, and device can affect when an update arrives, even within a stated support period.
So, which phones get updates for longer?
Among the specific policies compared here, recent Pixel 8-and-later phones and the Galaxy S26 series have explicit seven-year support commitments, though Samsung describes OS upgrades as seven generations and security updates as seven years. For iPhones, Apple’s iOS 26 list establishes current eligibility for the listed models, not a matching universal number of guaranteed years. Compare the exact model’s policy and remaining support rather than treating “iPhone” or “Android” as a single update promise.
