iPhone has a broad, officially documented list of built-in apps users can delete; Android varies by phone and app. On Android, a pre-installed app may be uninstallable, disable-only, or impossible to remove. Neither platform’s removal options prove that every built-in app is privacy-invasive—or that deleting apps alone makes a phone private.
What “remove” means: delete, disable, or hide
These actions are not interchangeable. Apple distinguishes removing an app from the Home Screen from deleting it: removing it from the Home Screen leaves it in the App Library. Deleting removes the app, though Apple warns that some built-in app deletions can affect related data, configuration files, or other system functions. See Apple’s iPhone app-removal guidance.
On Android, disabling is not deletion. Google says some system apps that came pre-installed cannot be deleted, while some phones let users turn certain apps off so they no longer appear in the app list. Android.com describes disabling as preventing an app from running or updating while it remains on the device. The precise effects depend on the phone and app; do not assume disabling removes the app’s storage footprint.

Which built-in apps can iPhone users delete?
Apple’s general iPhone guide lists built-in apps that can be deleted. Check the current list for the device and iOS version rather than assuming every Apple app is removable. Apple also cautions that deleting some built-in apps may remove related user data and configuration files or affect other system functions.

EU and Japan exceptions
Apple documents additional regional options in its country- and region-specific built-in app guidance. For users in the European Union, the listed additional deletable apps include Messages, App Store, Camera, Photos, Safari, and Phone on iPad. For users in Japan, Safari on iPhone is listed.
Some regional deletions require setting an alternative app or marketplace first. Deleting the App Store also changes how apps can be updated or downloaded again. These rules are region-specific; they should not be read as a general list for all iPhone owners.

How to check a pre-installed app on Android
Android does not have a single removal rule that applies to every manufacturer, model, and app. Google’s Android Help instructions explicitly note that some pre-installed system apps cannot be deleted and that turning apps off is available only on some phones.
- Open Settings > Apps and select the pre-installed app. Menu labels can differ by phone.
- Check the actions shown for that app. Uninstall means the phone offers deletion; Disable means the app remains installed but can be turned off. If neither option is available, the phone does not offer that removal action there.
- For model-specific instructions, consult the phone manufacturer’s support information. Google’s guidance points users to the device maker because behavior varies.
Do not assume that a carrier, manufacturer, or Google app has the same removal status on every Android phone. Android.com’s app-removal overview, dated February 16, 2026, likewise distinguishes uninstalling from disabling.

Does removing pre-installed software make a phone more private?
It can remove an app you do not want, but removal controls alone do not establish how much data any particular built-in app collects or whether it is privacy-invasive. The official documentation cited here describes what users can remove and which privacy controls are available; it is not a comparative audit of every pre-installed app’s data practices.
Use privacy controls as well as removal
Apple documents app permission controls and App Tracking Transparency in its privacy features overview. Android documents permissions, a Privacy Dashboard, automatic permission resets for unused apps, and camera and microphone toggles in its privacy and permissions overview. These tools address access and tracking separately from whether an app can be deleted.

How to choose between the two
If your priority is a clearly documented ability to delete built-in apps, iPhone is the more predictable choice based on Apple’s published lists, with additional options in the EU and Japan. If you are considering Android, evaluate the particular phone rather than the platform label: verify whether the apps you care about can be uninstalled or only disabled. In either case, also review app permissions and tracking controls; a removable-app list is not a complete privacy assessment.
