iPhone vs. Android: Apple Won the Money in 2023, Not Every Scoreboard

Apple was 2023’s commercial winner in premium smartphones, revenue, U.S. influence and year-end momentum—but it did not defeat Android worldwide on total device volume. Counterpoint estimated that Apple captured 50% of global smartphone revenue, worth just under $410 billion across the industry, while global shipments fell 4%. Android remained the broader platform, serving most low-cost and mid-range buyers through Samsung, Xiaomi, Motorola, Oppo, Vivo, Honor, Transsion, Google and others.

The honest verdict depends on the scoreboard: Apple won the money and premium market; Android retained greater global breadth and unit reach.

What does “winner” mean?

“Apple beat Android” combines unlike measures. Apple is one company with a tightly controlled iPhone range; Android is an operating system used by many manufacturers. A fair comparison separates these measures:

Scoreboard What 2023 shows How to read it
Global units Android vendors collectively covered most price tiers and regions. Counterpoint’s annual report retained Samsung as the shipment-share leader, while Apple led its Q4 2023 shipment measure. Quarterly leadership is not the same as full-year leadership, and Android is not one company.
Global revenue Apple captured an estimated 50% of smartphone revenue, with iPhone revenue around $203 billion. Apple converted a smaller premium-focused product range into an outsized share of industry money.
Premium segment Apple was the strongest global premium brand and the main beneficiary of high-end spending. This is where the “big winner” description is most defensible.
United States Apple reached 62% of U.S. smartphone shipments in Q4 2023, according to Counterpoint. A separate Counterpoint figure reproduced by BGR put Apple at 64% of U.S. smartphone sales for the December quarter. Shipments and sales are different measurements and should not be treated as interchangeable.
Company results Apple’s iPhone net sales fell 2% in its fiscal 2023, which ended September 30. Apple improved its relative position in a weak market, but its own annual iPhone sales were not universally growing.

Apple won the revenue game

Counterpoint’s estimate that Apple took half of global smartphone revenue is the clearest evidence of its 2023 advantage. The overall market generated slightly under $410 billion, yet Apple’s estimated iPhone revenue was about $203 billion. Those are market-research estimates, not Apple’s fiscal-year reporting convention.

The economics are straightforward: Apple concentrates on premium and upper-midrange devices, where each sale produces far more revenue. Counterpoint estimated 2023 average selling prices of approximately $890 for iPhone and $288 for Samsung. Samsung’s figure covers a much wider range of inexpensive as well as flagship phones, so the comparison describes product mix rather than product quality.

The iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max helped move buyers toward higher-priced configurations. Trade-ins, carrier financing and Apple’s services, accessories and App Store ecosystem can also reduce the perceived cost of upgrading while increasing the value captured over a customer relationship. These factors explain a revenue victory without proving that every iPhone is technically superior.

The United States was Apple’s strongest market

Apple’s Q4 2023 U.S. position was unusually dominant. Counterpoint reported 62% of smartphone shipment share, while the separate sales figure cited by BGR was 64% for the December quarter. Samsung was the leading Android brand but remained far behind Apple.

Rank #2
Apple iPhone 14, 128GB, Midnight - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
  • Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
  • The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
  • Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.

Several U.S.-specific forces reinforce that result:

  • iMessage and FaceTime create social-network effects when a user’s family, school or workplace already uses Apple.
  • Apple has extensive carrier distribution, upgrade programs and accessory availability.
  • The U.S. has a large premium-phone market, where Apple’s product range is concentrated.
  • Android’s strength is divided among several brands, so no single Android manufacturer matches Apple’s national share.

U.S. leadership cannot be projected onto India, China, Africa, Latin America or Southeast Asia, where lower-cost Android models are central to the market. Counterpoint specifically identified Apple growth in India, the Caribbean and Latin America, and the Middle East and Africa, while flagging Huawei’s resurgence as a China-specific risk.

What the December quarter proved—and did not prove

Apple’s fiscal first quarter of fiscal 2024, covering the quarter that ended in December 2023, produced $119.58 billion in revenue, $33.9 billion in profit and $69.7 billion in iPhone revenue, according to the figures reported by BGR. iPhone revenue represented almost 60% of Apple’s product sales in that quarter.

This was powerful year-end momentum around the iPhone 15 launch cycle. It was not Apple’s full calendar-year result: Apple’s fiscal 2023 ended on September 30, 2023, and the company reported a 2% iPhone-net-sales decline for that fiscal year. A strong December quarter therefore supports a relative-market-share story, not the claim that iPhone sales rose throughout 2023.

Android remained the global volume platform

Android did not “lose” as a single business because it is not a single business. Samsung competes with Apple at the high end, while Xiaomi, Motorola, Oppo, Vivo, Honor and Transsion serve important value and mid-range segments. Google’s Pixel has a smaller global share but competes through software and computational photography. Huawei regained premium momentum in China during 2023.

This distributed model gives Android its defining advantage: phones at many prices, sizes and feature levels. A revenue-share victory for Apple can coexist with Android accounting for most devices sold worldwide. Counterpoint’s Q4 tracker put Apple first in that quarter’s global shipment ranking, but its annual revenue report still identified Samsung as the annual shipment-share leader. Neither result establishes that Apple sold more phones than all Android vendors combined.

Why the iPhone 15 cycle mattered

The iPhone 15 family arrived into a weak market and gave Apple a particularly strong premium refresh. The Pro models offered a clear upsell path, while the established iOS ecosystem, dependable video recording, resale values and broad U.S. carrier support reduced switching friction. USB-C and camera improvements added practical reasons to upgrade.

Those are plausible contributors to Apple’s performance, not proof of one exclusive cause. Launch timing also matters: Apple’s new iPhones typically make the December quarter disproportionately important, so a Q4 lead should not be read as an annual verdict without the period attached.

Which Android companies actually challenged Apple?

Samsung

Samsung was Apple’s principal premium rival and the annual shipment leader in Counterpoint’s cited report. Its Galaxy range also reaches price tiers that Apple does not serve.

Google Pixel

Pixel emphasizes Google services, clean Android software and computational photography. Its global scale was much smaller than Apple’s or Samsung’s.

Xiaomi, Motorola and Transsion

These brands are especially important where affordability and broad model choice matter. Their market roles show why Android’s unit reach cannot be judged by flagship comparisons alone.

Oppo, Vivo, Honor and Huawei

These manufacturers have substantial regional influence, particularly in China and other Asian markets. Huawei’s 2023 resurgence was principally a China risk to Apple, not evidence of a worldwide Android takeover.

The uncomfortable caveat: Apple did not grow on every measure

Apple’s Form 10-K reported that iPhone net sales declined 2% from 2022, approximately $4.9 billion, in fiscal 2023. Higher Pro-model sales partly offset lower sales of non-Pro models. This is why “winner” should be understood as a relative market and value claim: Apple captured an exceptional share of industry revenue during a shrinking market even while its own fiscal-year iPhone sales fell.

The available figures do not establish a precise Apple-versus-Android operating-profit comparison. Android has no single profit-reporting company, and manufacturers disclose results differently.

Does Apple’s market success mean iPhones were objectively better?

No. Market performance measures commercial power, not a universal product ranking. Android phones often offer:

  • More price points, screen sizes and hardware designs
  • Foldables, faster charging and more aggressive camera hardware
  • Deeper customization, multitasking and file-management flexibility on some models

iPhones commonly appeal through tight hardware-software integration, long software support, consistent video quality, high resale values and a cohesive accessory and services ecosystem. Update policies, privacy defaults, repairability and camera performance vary substantially by Android brand and exact model, so “Android” cannot have one specification or support promise.

What the 2023 result means for a buyer

Prioritize this Usually the better fit Why
Existing Apple devices, iMessage/FaceTime contacts, resale value or consistent U.S. carrier support iPhone Apple’s ecosystem and premium distribution are strongest in these use cases.
Lower prices and many screen, camera and form-factor options Android Multiple manufacturers cover far more price tiers.
Foldables, very fast charging, customization or flexible file access Android These features are more widely available across Android models.
Google software and computational photography Pixel Pixel offers a focused Google experience, though with less global carrier and accessory reach.
Premium Android hardware and a broad lineup Galaxy Samsung is the closest large-scale Android alternative to Apple.

Trade-in values, financing, carrier eligibility and promotional credits change frequently. Check the live terms at Apple, Samsung and Google rather than treating a promotion as permanent. Trade-in details are available from Apple, Samsung and Google.

Verdict

Apple was 2023’s winner by smartphone revenue, premium-market power, U.S. share and Q4 momentum. Android was still the winner by platform breadth, worldwide accessibility and total coverage of low-cost and mid-range demand. Saying simply that Apple beat Android worldwide hides the distinction that made 2023 unusual: Apple won the economics of smartphones while Android remained the larger, more varied platform.
