The Galaxy S25’s Now Bar is a lock-screen hub for glanceable updates and ongoing activities—not a single AI feature. It can surface things such as Maps directions, media, timers, sports updates and workout information. Samsung’s personalized Now Brief can appear there too, while separate Galaxy AI tools handle tasks such as writing, transcription and photo editing.
That distinction matters: the Now Bar is the interface, and only some of the information or services it presents relies on AI. Its value is practical convenience for people who want quick updates without opening apps; it is not, by itself, a reason most owners of a recent Galaxy phone need to upgrade.
What is the Galaxy S25 Now Bar?
The Now Bar is a live-activity area on the Galaxy lock screen, with related information also available in the status bar and Notification panel. It gives supported apps and services a place to show what is happening now—such as a timer, navigation or workout—so you can check progress or open the relevant activity without first finding its app.
Samsung requires a screen lock for the Now Bar. After waking the display, swipe upward on the bar to browse an activity. What appears depends on the enabled categories, active apps and services, and software support on the device. Samsung’s Now Bar and Now Brief support guide describes the setup and available controls.

Now Bar, Now Brief and Galaxy AI: what is the difference?

Now Brief can appear inside the Now Bar, but it is a separate feature; it can also be opened from a Home-screen widget or the Edge panel. And a conventional timer or media control in the Now Bar should not be mistaken for generative AI. Samsung’s feature guide explains the distinction and access points.
What can appear in the Now Bar?
Google Maps directions and travel updates
Google says Maps directions can appear in the Galaxy S25 Now Bar, with travel-related notifications such as when to leave for an appointment. This is a glanceable way to keep track of a route, not a replacement for the full Maps app. The specific prompts and availability depend on the service and location. Sports updates
The bar can show live information for followed teams, including match status and scores. Tapping an update can lead to more detail, statistics and news through Google Search. Coverage depends on supported markets, competitions and teams, so the feature is not a guarantee of scores for every sport or event. Google describes the integration in its Galaxy S25 announcement.
Media and timers
Active media players and timers are among the Now Bar’s quick-access activities. These are ordinary controls surfaced in a convenient place; their presence does not mean that AI generated or manages them.

Workouts, Interpreter and other activities
Samsung lists Samsung Health activities, Interpreter and other supported live tasks among the Now Bar categories. Recordings, modes and routines may also be available depending on the software and the active service. A category needs to be supported and enabled, and the app or activity that supplies it must be set up and running.
Now Brief cards
Now Brief can surface selected contextual information from the lock screen. Its available content depends on the categories you enable and the data or services available to the phone. You can also use its widget or the Edge panel rather than opening it from the Now Bar.
Galaxy AI features that are separate from the Now Bar
The Galaxy S25 launched with Android 15 and One UI 7 and includes a broader set of AI capabilities. These do not all live in the Now Bar. Samsung’s Galaxy S25 announcement describes features including:
- Gemini and cross-app actions: Holding the side button can invoke Gemini. Samsung and Google describe actions spanning supported apps such as Maps, YouTube, Google Messages, Spotify, Samsung Calendar, Samsung Notes, Samsung Reminder and Samsung Clock. Which actions work depends on app availability and setup.
- Circle to Search: Search for visible content and use actions for detected items such as phone numbers, email addresses and URLs.
- Writing Assist: Summarize, format or otherwise work with text in supported contexts.
- Call Transcript and summaries: Transcribe and summarize supported calls or recordings, where available.
- Drawing Assist: Generate or transform content using sketches, text or image prompts.
- Generative Edit and Audio Eraser: Edit images with AI assistance or reduce selected types of unwanted sound in videos.
- Natural-language Gallery search: Search photos with conversational descriptions.
- Personal Data Engine: Personalize some experiences by analyzing selected Samsung-native app data when the relevant settings are enabled.
Samsung cautions that the availability and reliability of AI output can vary, and that results are not guaranteed to be accurate. Check generated text, translations, transcriptions, summaries, suggested actions and edits before relying on them.

How to turn on and customize the Now Bar
- Open Settings.
- Tap Lock screen and AOD or Lock screen, depending on the software version.
- Tap Now bar. If you see View more instead, tap it to expand the options.
- Switch on the activity categories you want. You can also enable options such as Media player and Current mode if they appear.
- Wake the lock screen and swipe upward on the Now Bar to choose an activity. Touch and hold the bar to remove categories or open its settings.
A screen lock must be enabled. The exact labels may differ by software version; Samsung’s support instructions show the current controls.
How to set up Now Brief
- Open Settings, then tap Galaxy AI.
- Tap Now brief, then open Content to include.
- Choose the categories you want, such as health and wellness, travel, events and tasks, phone settings, news or smart home.
- Review optional controls such as Audio brief, Expand Now brief without unlocking and Get richer Insights.
- Use Manage personal data to review personalization and data settings.
Samsung says Now Brief requires signing in to a Samsung Account; some information may also need an internet connection. Its content depends on the categories enabled and relevant apps, settings and contextual data. If it is empty or generic, check those settings and whether the services it would draw on are configured. Samsung documents the setup in its support guide.
Does Galaxy AI work offline?
Not every Galaxy AI feature uses the same processing method. Samsung lists translation, time-and-weather Ambient wallpapers and certain Google Messages functions as examples of on-device processing; it lists auto-formatting, auto-summarizing, auto-correction and image editing among cloud-based functions. The processing method can differ by feature and software version.
To limit Galaxy AI to on-device processing, open Settings → Galaxy AI and enable Process data only on device. This may limit or disable functions that need remote processing. Samsung’s Galaxy AI support page describes processing types and compatible devices.

Accounts, privacy and lock-screen visibility
Some Galaxy AI functions need a Samsung Account, an internet connection or both; Now Brief specifically requires Samsung Account sign-in. Google services such as Gemini, Maps and Search have their own availability and service requirements. Samsung’s Personal Data Engine uses selected Samsung-native app information for personalization when that feature is enabled; it is not described as analyzing every app or all phone activity.
The Expand Now brief without unlocking control governs whether the brief can expand on the lock screen, but it does not mean every activity or detail is available without unlocking. The information shown depends on content type, privacy settings and software version. If you prefer a more private lock screen, keep the brief collapsed or review the device’s lock-screen notification settings.
Restricting cloud processing can improve control over where supported AI processing happens, but may reduce functionality. Live notifications, location features, health tracking and synchronization can also involve background activity; the battery effect depends on usage and settings, and no specific battery impact is established here.
Availability and common problems
The S25 series launched with Android 15 and One UI 7. Samsung’s current support documentation also describes Now Bar and Now Brief on select devices running Android 14 with One UI 6.1 or later, but availability is model-dependent rather than guaranteed on every phone with that software. Samsung lists Galaxy S25, S25+, S25 Ultra and S25 FE among Galaxy AI-compatible devices while noting that individual features vary by model and software version. Country, language, carrier, app support and network access can also affect what works.

If the Now Bar is missing
- Confirm that a screen lock is enabled and that the phone has current software.
- Check Settings → Lock screen and AOD/Lock screen → Now bar and turn on at least one category.
- Make sure the app or service that supplies the activity is installed, configured and active.
- Check whether the feature is supported for your model, software version, country and language.
If Now Brief is empty or generic
- Finish setup and sign in to the required Samsung Account.
- Review Content to include and enable relevant categories.
- Check that the apps and personalization settings needed for those categories are configured.
- Connect to the internet if the particular information source requires it.
If a feature or result is unavailable
Feature lists are not identical across S25 models, markets and software builds. Call recording is not supported in some countries, and Call Transcript varies by language and region. If an AI result matters—for example, a transcription, translation, summary, generated image or travel suggestion—verify it rather than treating it as authoritative.
Is the Now Bar worth using?
The Now Bar is most useful if you regularly check navigation, sports, workouts, timers or media and want those updates without switching into full apps. Its customizable categories help keep it focused, and Now Brief adds a way to surface selected contextual information from the same lock-screen area.
It is less compelling if you keep the lock screen free of notifications, rarely use supported Samsung or Google services, or do not want personal context connected to a briefing. The main trade-off is convenience versus integration: richer, more relevant information can depend on accounts, connectivity and the personal data sources you choose to enable.
For a purchase decision, treat the Now Bar as a useful workflow feature rather than a standalone breakthrough. Buy or upgrade to the Galaxy S25 for the overall phone package that suits you; the Now Bar alone is unlikely to justify replacing a recent Galaxy model.
Are Galaxy AI features free?
Samsung’s current support language says basic Samsung Galaxy AI features are free, while enhanced Samsung AI and third-party AI features may have different terms or fees. That is not a promise that every AI capability will always be free. Check the terms for the specific feature or service you plan to use; Samsung summarizes its current distinction in its Now Bar and Galaxy AI support information.
