Why is my iPhone stuck on Update Requested?
“Update Requested” is commonly described as the stage before an update downloads or prepares, but Apple does not define it as a specific error code. Seeing it does not by itself prove that the iPhone is broken or that Apple’s servers are overloaded. A brief pause can happen, particularly around a release; the time needed can depend on the update and connection. There is no established universal duration after which this screen means the update has failed. iGeeksBlog’s October 1, 2026 guide discusses the status in the context of iOS 27, but the steps below apply as general troubleshooting rather than a guarantee for a particular release.

Apple identifies device compatibility, an internet connection, and sufficient available storage as update prerequisites. Start there, then try the wireless fixes before switching to a computer.
8 fixes for an iPhone stuck on Update Requested
1. Check compatibility, storage, and power
- Confirm that your specific iPhone model supports the iOS version being offered. If it is not compatible, it cannot install that release.
- Check available space in Settings > General > iPhone Storage. Apple requires enough storage but does not publish a single free-space threshold that applies to every update.
- Connect the iPhone to power while you wait or retry. This is a practical precaution, not a documented fix for the status itself.
Apple’s update guidance lists compatibility, internet access, and available storage as requirements. Apple’s “If your iPhone or iPad won’t update” guidance also describes downloading the update again when an installation cannot complete.

2. Give the request time to proceed
If the phone is responsive and the connection is working, wait a while before interrupting the attempt. Large downloads and busy release periods may take longer, but neither Apple nor the available guidance sets a standard number of minutes for “Update Requested.” Avoid treating a particular elapsed time as proof of failure.
3. Check Wi‑Fi
Make sure the iPhone is on the intended Wi‑Fi network and that ordinary web pages load. If possible, try a different Wi‑Fi network. Apple recommends Wi‑Fi rather than a personal hotspot for downloading software updates. Apple’s Wi‑Fi and software-update troubleshooting guidance explains this distinction.

If the signal is weak, the iGeeksBlog guide suggests moving closer to the router, restarting it, or temporarily disconnecting a VPN. These are general connection checks; Apple’s cited guidance does not establish them as causes of this specific status.

Restart the phone normally, then return to Settings > General > Software Update and try again. If the iPhone is unresponsive, use the restart method for its model rather than assuming every iPhone has the same buttons. For Face ID models, the common force-restart sequence is: press and quickly release Volume Up, press and quickly release Volume Down, then hold the Side button until the Apple logo appears. Check Apple’s current restart instructions for the exact steps for your device.

5. Delete a visible update file and request it again
Use this step only if the downloaded iOS update appears in iPhone Storage:
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Tap the iOS update entry, then choose Delete Update.
- Go back to Settings > General > Software Update and request the update again.
The update file may not appear there, so do not treat its absence as a problem. Apple’s update troubleshooting includes downloading the update again if installation cannot complete.

6. Free up storage if needed
If iPhone Storage shows little available space, remove or offload items only as needed; keep a backup of important content. The iGeeksBlog guide recommends 15 GB, but that is its editorial recommendation, not an Apple minimum. Apple’s cited guidance says only that there must be enough available storage, with no universal amount specified.

- Open Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset, then Reset Network Settings.
- Reconnect to Wi‑Fi and try the update again.

8. Try updating with a computer
If the wireless update continues to stall, a computer is another route. Back up the iPhone first. Use Finder on a Mac, Apple Devices on Windows where available, or iTunes on older setups. A computer update is not guaranteed to avoid every network or server issue.
Apple’s computer troubleshooting recommends keeping the computer and its Apple software up to date, connecting the iPhone directly to a USB port rather than through a hub or keyboard, and restarting both devices. If an error persists, check security software and try another cable, USB port, computer, or network. Apple’s update and restore error guidance covers these connection checks.

Wireless update or computer update?

Neither route is established as universally faster. Choose the computer route when wireless troubleshooting has not moved the update forward and you have a computer that can connect to the iPhone.
When to contact Apple Support
Escalate if the computer does not recognize the iPhone, the device enters recovery mode, or the Apple logo remains for several minutes without a progress bar. Follow Apple’s recovery-mode instructions or contact Apple Support for model-specific help. Do not choose Restore as an early troubleshooting step: recovery workflows can erase data.
