Silence sends calls from numbers not saved in your iPhone’s contacts to voicemail without ringing. Pixel Call Screen asks selected callers who they are and why they are calling; it declines calls identified as spam and rings for other screened calls after showing you the caller’s response. Neither feature blocks every unwanted call.
What each feature actually does
The key difference is the trigger. iPhone Silence acts on whether a number is saved in Contacts. Pixel Call Screen interacts with selected callers and uses its spam detection to decide whether to decline a call or let it ring after screening.

| Feature | What triggers it | What happens to the call | Does the caller answer questions? |
|---|---|---|---|
| iPhone Silence | The number is not saved in Contacts | The call is silenced, sent to voicemail, and shown in Recents | No |
| iPhone Ask Reason for Calling | An unknown caller, as defined by the iPhone setting | The caller is asked for information; the iPhone rings afterward so you can decide whether to answer | Yes |
| Google Pixel Call Screen | A caller category selected for screening, subject to device and regional availability | Call Assist asks who is calling and why. Calls identified as spam are declined; other screened calls ring and show the caller’s response | Yes |
Apple describes its interactive option this way: “After the caller shares their name and reason for their call, your iPhone rings and shares their response so you can decide if you want to pick up.” Apple’s iPhone call-screening guide documents the options and routing behavior.

- Never: Unsaved numbers ring as usual.
- Ask Reason for Calling: The phone asks unknown callers for more information before it rings, then presents their response.
- Silence: Calls from unsaved numbers do not ring; they go to voicemail and appear in Recents.
These are not the same as Apple’s separate call-history and spam controls. Unknown Callers filtering moves missed calls and voicemails from unknown numbers into an Unknown Callers list; it organizes call history rather than blocking calls. The separate Spam control silences and sends to voicemail calls that a carrier identifies as potential spam or fraud, placing them in a Spam list. Menu labels and availability can vary with iOS version and carrier. See Apple’s guide to managing unknown callers.
How Google Pixel Call Screen handles callers
Call Screen is a Google Phone feature documented for supported Pixel phones and, in limited circumstances, selected other Android devices. It is not a standard behavior that can be assumed on every Android phone.

Automatic screening
When automatic screening is available and configured for a caller category, Call Assist asks the caller who they are and why they are calling. If it identifies the call as spam, the phone hangs up. If it does not identify the call as spam, the phone rings and shows how the caller responded. A call that is not flagged as spam is not thereby guaranteed to be safe: Google says detection can miss spam and robocalls.
Manual screening
For an incoming call, you can tap Screen call. You can read a real-time transcript, choose a suggested response, answer, or hang up. Google says contacts are not screened automatically; contact status helps determine whether a call is screened. The available controls and caller categories depend on the phone and software. Google’s Call Screen instructions explain the supported modes and settings.

Where Pixel Call Screen is available—and its limits
Google’s published availability differs by screening mode. Automatic Pixel screening is listed for Australia, Canada, Ireland, the UK, and the US. Manual Pixel screening is listed for those countries plus France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, and Spain. Selected Android devices also support manual screening in the US and Canada. Google says manual screening requires a SIM from a supported country.
Settings also vary by Pixel generation: Google’s instructions describe unknown-caller settings for Pixel 6 and earlier, and protection levels for Pixel 7 and later. Country, device, SIM, app version, roaming, and configuration can affect availability, so check the Phone app on your device for the controls it actually offers.

- Google says automatic screening may not work while roaming or in some Bluetooth and headphone scenarios.
- Google advises against using call forwarding with screening because screened calls will not be forwarded.
- Apple says its calls are not screened while roaming, and screening turns off for 24 hours after you call emergency services.
- Apple’s carrier-based Spam control depends on the carrier identifying a call as potential spam or fraud.
These are operational limits, not a promise that every other call will be handled the same way. Google’s caller ID and spam protection guidance also describes how caller identification and spam protection work in the Phone app.
Caller identification and privacy
Apple says iPhone can identify calls using information from Apple Business Connect, supported carriers, and supported call-identification apps. Google says numbers outside your contacts may be sent to Google to help identify a business caller ID name or determine whether a call is spam.

Google separately says screened call audio and transcripts are not saved to your Google Account or activity pages; its documentation also describes an optional setting for sharing Call Screen data. These statements describe the documented identification and screening practices, not a broader guarantee about every call or data use. More detail is in Google’s Call Screen privacy information.
Which should you use?
- Choose iPhone Silence if your priority is not being interrupted by numbers that are not saved, and you are willing to check voicemail or Recents for calls you might have wanted.
- Choose iPhone Ask Reason for Calling if you want unknown callers to explain themselves before your phone rings rather than sending all unsaved calls straight to voicemail.
- Use Pixel Call Screen if your supported Pixel or Android device offers it and you want an interactive screening exchange, with calls identified as spam declined and other screened calls presented for your decision.
Silence is based on contact status, not a judgment that a caller is spam. Call Screen attempts to assess screened calls, but its detection is imperfect. Neither setting should be treated as a complete unwanted-call blocker.
