What shutter speed does
Shutter speed is the amount of time the camera exposes an image. A shorter exposure can help freeze movement; a longer exposure can gather more light, but movement by the subject or phone during the capture is more likely to blur the photo. The right setting depends on the scene, especially how much light is available, whether the subject is moving, and whether the phone is steady.

Which iPhones let you set shutter speed manually?
Apple’s current Camera guide documents manual shutter-speed control on iPhone 18 Pro models. On other models, Apple says the Main camera sets shutter speed automatically. Not all Camera features are available on every iPhone, and the interface can vary by model and software version. Apple’s Camera guide lists the supported controls.

- Open Camera. Choose one of the modes where the control is available: Photo, Video, Cinematic, Slo-mo, or Time-Lapse.
- Open Camera Controls. Tap the Camera Controls button, then choose Shutter Speed. Apple says you can also add Shutter Speed to the tools above the camera frame.
- Set the value. Drag the slider to the shutter speed you want. Consider the trade-off: a shorter exposure is more suitable for motion, while a longer exposure lets in more light but requires greater stability.
Apple’s guide also documents a histogram, which can help you assess exposure while framing. A particular shutter-speed number is not right for every scene, so adjust for the light, subject movement, and camera stability rather than relying on a universal setting. Apple’s Camera guide

How Night mode exposure works
Night mode is a distinct low-light option, not a general manual shutter-speed setting. On supported iPhones, it turns on automatically in low light and the camera chooses the exposure time. You can select among the exposure options shown for that capture. Apple’s support material says Night mode works with iPhone 11 and later, but specific features vary by model. - In a low-light scene, check whether the Night mode control appears in Camera.
- Open Camera Controls and choose Night Mode to see the available exposure options.
- Select an option shown for your capture, then hold the iPhone still until the photo finishes.
The on-screen number indicates exposure time. Apple says the Max option can extend capture time; depending on scene brightness, a Night mode photo may take several seconds. A tripod is optional, but Apple recommends one for more detailed Night mode photos. Apple Support

What changes Night mode behavior?
Live Photos and flash are not available alongside Night mode in the described capture behavior: turning either on disables Night mode. If you need Live Photos or flash for the scene, choose that behavior knowing Night mode will turn off. Apple Support
Shutter speed, exposure adjustment, and settings that persist
Exposure adjustment and shutter speed are different controls. Exposure adjustment changes the image’s brightness; it does not directly set a shutter-speed value. Apple’s Preserve Settings guide lists Exposure Adjustment for iPhone 11 and later, Night Mode for supported models, and Lens Aperture for iPhone 18 Pro models. The listed settings do not establish a general shutter-speed preservation toggle, so do not assume a manually chosen shutter speed will persist between Camera sessions.
