In 2026, however, Apple’s current entry-level model is the iPhone 17e, which starts at the same U.S. price of $599 while doubling base storage to 256GB and adding an A19 chip and MagSafe.
Did Apple release an iPhone SE 4?
No. “iPhone SE 4” was the widely used prelaunch rumor name, not Apple’s product name. Apple announced the iPhone 16e on February 19, 2025, opened preorders on February 21 and released it on February 28. Apple presented it as a new member of the iPhone 16 family rather than an SE-branded model.

What the A18 chip means
The iPhone 16e uses an A18 with two performance CPU cores, four efficiency cores, a four-core GPU and a 16-core Neural Engine. Apple says its CPU is up to 80% faster than the A13 Bionic in iPhone 11 and that its Neural Engine runs machine-learning models up to six times faster than A13; those are Apple’s own test claims.
A18 branding does not mean the 16e has exactly the same implementation or graphics performance as every iPhone 16 model. The 16e’s four-core GPU is a key specification difference, so it should not be described as having an identical chip configuration to the standard iPhone 16.
Apple Intelligence support and storage requirements
Yes, the iPhone 16e supports Apple Intelligence. Its A18 chip and Neural Engine meet Apple’s hardware requirement, but eligibility is not a guarantee that every feature works everywhere. Availability depends on the iOS version, device and Siri language, country or region and Apple’s rollout of individual features.

Apple’s current technical specifications say the on-device Apple Intelligence models use approximately 7GB of storage. Disabling Apple Intelligence can remove those models; enabling it again downloads them. That makes a 128GB 16e less comfortable for people who also keep large photo libraries, games or offline video on the phone.
Design and display changes from the old SE
The 16e is a substantial change from the third-generation iPhone SE. It replaces the 4.7-inch LCD, thick bezels and Home button with a 6.1-inch OLED display, an edge-to-edge design and Face ID. Authentication is therefore facial rather than Touch ID-based.
- Display: 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED at 2532 × 1170 pixels.
- Port: USB-C instead of Lightning.
- Durability: IP68 water resistance under controlled laboratory testing.
- Finish: black or white.
- Missing features: no physical Home button, Dynamic Island, Camera Control or MagSafe.
The original iPhone SE 3 launched at $429 in the United States; the 16e launched at $599 for 128GB. That price comparison is historical, not a current quote for remaining 16e stock.

How the single camera works
The iPhone 16e has one physical rear camera: a 48MP Fusion Main camera. Apple’s “2-in-1 camera system” description refers to the camera’s 12MP 2x optical-quality output, not to a separate telephoto lens. The phone has no dedicated ultrawide camera and supports up to 10x digital zoom.
The 2x view uses the high-resolution main sensor together with cropping and computational processing. Buyers who regularly photograph landscapes, groups or interiors will get less flexibility than they would from an iPhone with a separate ultrawide camera.
Battery, connectivity and charging
Apple positions the 16e as a substantial battery-life improvement over earlier SE models, but actual runtime varies with network conditions, brightness, settings, apps and usage. Apple’s battery figures are controlled-test claims rather than a guarantee for every owner.

iPhone 16e versus iPhone 17e in 2026
The 16e’s launch price should not be confused with its current value. Apple’s iPhone 17e buying page lists the newer model at $599 for 256GB and $799 for 512GB in the United States. Apple’s 17e overview identifies its A19 chip, Apple Intelligence support, MagSafe and up to 26 hours of video playback.
| Feature | iPhone 16e | iPhone 17e |
|---|---|---|
| Starting U.S. price | $599 at 2025 launch for 128GB | $599 for 256GB |

| MagSafe | No | Yes |
| Sales status | Listed by Apple as available through authorized resellers | Current entry-level model sold directly by Apple |
At the same official starting price, the 17e offers newer silicon, twice the base storage and MagSafe. The 16e is therefore most compelling only when a reputable seller discounts it materially below $599, or when availability makes it the practical option. Reseller prices, warranty terms, return policies, battery condition and carrier locks should be checked on the exact listing.
Who should still consider the iPhone 16e?
- Someone upgrading from an iPhone SE, iPhone 8, iPhone XR or older model who finds a substantial discount.
- A buyer who wants Apple Intelligence, OLED, Face ID and USB-C without paying flagship pricing.
- A user who does not need an ultrawide camera, ProMotion, Dynamic Island or a larger display.
- A 128GB buyer who has modest local storage needs and accepts the space used by Apple Intelligence models.
When another iPhone makes more sense
- Choose the iPhone 17e for a new purchase near full price: it starts at $599 with 256GB, A19 and MagSafe.
- Choose a higher model if an ultrawide camera, more advanced display features, Dynamic Island or a larger screen matters.
- Choose the old SE 3 only for its Home button; it lacks Apple Intelligence and uses substantially older hardware.
- Consider refurbished phones carefully: verify battery health, storage, carrier-lock status, warranty and Apple Intelligence compatibility before buying.
The practical 2026 verdict follows from Apple’s published specifications and prices rather than independent hands-on testing: buy an iPhone 16e when the discount is meaningful; otherwise, the iPhone 17e is the more rational current entry-level purchase.
