If your iPhone says “Unable to Check for Update” while looking for iOS 27.0.1, it cannot reach or verify Apple’s software-update server. Start by checking your connection and available storage, then try another Wi‑Fi network. If that fails, remove any downloaded update and try again, or update through a Mac or Windows PC. The alert alone does not show that iOS 27.0.1 is defective.
What the alert means
Apple groups “Unable to Check for Update,” “An error occurred while checking for a software update,” and “Checking for a software update failed because you are not connected to the internet” among update connection errors. The message indicates the iPhone could not reach or verify the update server; it does not, by itself, identify the cause.
Apple’s published guidance is general iPhone update troubleshooting. It does not establish that iOS 27.0.1 itself causes this alert or document a separate version-specific outage. See Apple’s iPhone update guidance.
Check the iPhone before retrying
- Compatibility: Confirm that the iPhone model supports the software version being offered.
- Connection: Connect to dependable Wi‑Fi. Apple recommends Wi‑Fi for updates; if the download is slow, its duration depends on the update size and internet speed.
- Storage: Check Settings > General > iPhone Storage for available space.
- Power: Connect the iPhone to power while updating.
- Other downloads: Avoid downloading other content while the update is being obtained.
Try the fixes in order
1. Retry on the same network, then switch networks
- Open Settings > General > Software Update and try checking again on your current Wi‑Fi network.
- If the same alert returns, connect to a different Wi‑Fi network and check again.
This first step tests whether the problem is specific to the network your iPhone is using.

2. Delete and download the update again
If checks fail on multiple networks, a previously downloaded update may need to be removed before trying again. Apple’s documented path is:
- Open Settings > General > iPhone Storage.
- Find and tap the iOS update in the list.
- Tap Delete Update.
- Return to Settings > General > Software Update and download the update again.
3. Update with a Mac or Windows PC
If wireless checks still fail, use a computer. Keep macOS, iTunes, or Apple Devices up to date, as appropriate for the computer. Connect the iPhone with the cable that came with it or another Apple-certified USB cable; if needed, try a different USB port.

- Windows: Use Apple Devices or iTunes to access the update control.
Keep the USB connection in place during an active computer update. If you need a replacement cable, check whether your iPhone uses USB-C or Lightning and choose a cable compatible with that connector; Apple recommends the supplied cable or another Apple-certified USB cable. A phone that is merely unable to check for an update is different from one stuck during installation. If the screen is frozen, or the Apple logo remains visible for several minutes without a progress bar, use Apple’s recovery-mode instructions. Do not disconnect the phone while a computer update is in progress.
