In the iPhone Photos app, open a photo, tap Edit, then choose Filters to change its look or Crop to adjust framing, rotate, or flip it. Tap Done to save. The steps also work for videos where the relevant controls are available.
Start editing in Photos
- Open the Photos app and select a photo or video.
- Tap Edit. This opens the controls for adjustments such as light, color, cropping, rotation, and filters. Apple’s Photos editing guide documents this entry point.
How do I add a filter?
- With the image open in Edit, tap Filters.
- Choose a look, such as Vivid or Dramatic.
- Adjust the intensity slider to make the effect stronger or subtler. Filters change the image’s tint and overall look; there is no universally best choice.
- Tap the photo to compare it with the original, then tap Done to save. If you do not want to keep the unsaved changes, tap Cancel and discard them. Apple’s filter instructions describe these controls.
On iPhone 16 models or later, Apple directs users to Photographic Styles for customized looks. Filters remain available on those models when Photographic Styles are not turned on. The exact controls may vary with model and iOS version.

How do I crop a photo on my iPhone?
- Open the photo, tap Edit, then tap Crop.
- Drag a corner of the frame or pinch to adjust the visible area. Dragging a corner keeps the original aspect ratio. To change the ratio, unlock it or choose a preset such as Square, Wallpaper, 9:16, or 5:7.
- Tap Done to save. As a shortcut while viewing a photo, pinch to zoom, tap Crop at the top right, make any additional adjustments, and tap Done.
For a cleaner composition, you might crop out distracting edges while keeping the subject and the framing you want. That is a choice, not a required Photos setting. Apple’s crop, rotate, and flip guide covers the available controls.

How do I flip or rotate a photo?
- Open the image and go to Edit > Crop.
- Tap the Flip control to mirror the image horizontally. Tap Rotate to turn it 90 degrees.
- Tap Done to save.
The documented Flip control mirrors horizontally; do not confuse it with a vertical flip. These controls are part of the same Crop screen used to adjust framing.

Compare edits, undo changes, and restore the original
- Compare while editing: Tap the image to see how it looks against the original. Apple also documents undo and redo controls during editing.
- Discard before saving: Tap Cancel and choose to discard unwanted edits rather than tapping Done.
- Revert after saving: Reopen the image’s edit screen and choose Revert to restore the original.
- Keep edits in sync: If iCloud Photos is enabled, edits are saved across your devices. See Apple’s iCloud Photos editing information.
Button placement and wording can vary by iPhone model, settings, and iOS version, but the basic workflow begins with opening the image and tapping Edit.
