Apple’s documented options are to use your previous passcode if you changed it recently, or erase and reset the iPhone. After an erase, you can restore personal content only if you have a backup.
Can Face ID unlock an iPhone when you forget the passcode?
No. Apple’s forgotten-passcode instructions do not offer Face ID as a way to recover access. The non-erasing option is available only when you recently changed the passcode and still know the old one. Otherwise, Apple’s supported recovery methods reset the iPhone and erase its current data.

Choose the recovery path that matches your situation

These are Apple’s documented recovery paths. Interface wording can vary by iOS version and localization.
Try the previous passcode if you changed it recently
On iOS 17 or later, Apple allows the previous passcode to be used for 72 hours after a passcode change. If you know it, follow the Passcode Reset prompt on the iPhone. After a successful entry, you’ll be prompted to change the passcode again immediately. This is the documented option that avoids a computer and device reset. Apple’s Passcode Reset instructions explain the steps.

Erase the iPhone from its lock screen
If the iPhone displays “iPhone Unavailable” or “Security Lockout,” an on-device reset may be available on iOS 15.2 or later. It requires that Find My was enabled, the iPhone has a network connection, and you know the Apple Account password associated with it.
- On iOS 17 or later, tap “Forgot Passcode?” On iOS 15.2 or iOS 16, look for “Erase [Device].”
- Follow the on-screen instructions and confirm that you want to erase the iPhone.
- Enter the Apple Account password when prompted.
- After the erase, follow setup and restore from a backup if one is available.
Apple’s instructions for resetting a passcode without a computer cover the supported versions and steps. The erase removes data currently on the iPhone; recovery of personal content afterward depends on a backup.

Use recovery mode with a computer if the lock-screen reset is unavailable
For the computer route, you need a Mac or Windows PC, an internet connection, and a cable that can connect to the iPhone and charge it. Recovery-mode button sequences differ by iPhone model.
- Turn off the iPhone and connect it to the computer while using the model-specific button sequence to enter recovery mode.
- On a Mac, open Finder. On Windows, open Apple Devices.
- Select the iPhone when it appears, then choose “Restore.”
- Wait for the restore to complete, then set up the iPhone and restore from a backup if available.
Apple’s computer-based passcode reset instructions provide the recovery-mode steps. A restore erases the iPhone’s current data.

If you do not have a computer or cannot enter recovery mode
Apple recommends visiting an Apple Store or Apple Authorised Service Provider if you cannot borrow a computer, the buttons do not respond, or you cannot reach recovery mode. Service is a place to get help with the procedure; it is not a promise that anyone can recover a forgotten passcode or preserve data that was not backed up. See Apple’s recovery guidance.

For an eSIM, Apple says the iOS 17-or-later on-device erase flow lets you choose whether to keep or delete it. If the iPhone uses an eSIM and runs iOS 16 or earlier, contact your carrier before resetting to arrange reconfiguration. Apple outlines these details in its no-computer reset instructions.
