Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIf your iPhone charges but does not appear on your computer, charging alone does not prove the cable can carry data. Start by unlocking the iPhone, opening the right Apple app, using a data-capable cable connected directly to the computer, and accepting any trust or accessory prompts. Then test another USB port and computer before changing settings or seeking repair.
First, check what “not detected” means
The symptom helps identify which part of the connection to troubleshoot. Finder, Apple Devices, and iTunes handle Apple device management; File Explorer may show photos without providing the same functions.
| What you see | What it suggests | What to try next |
|---|---|---|
| The iPhone neither charges nor produces a connection sound or vibration | A cable, USB port, iPhone port, power, or hardware problem | Try a known-good cable and another direct USB port. If charging remains unreliable, prioritize hardware diagnosis. |
| The iPhone charges, but does not appear in an Apple app | A charge-only or damaged cable, a failed data connection, missing trust approval, outdated software or drivers, or a security conflict | Unlock the iPhone, check prompts, then test a data-capable cable and another computer. |
| The iPhone appears in File Explorer but not Apple Devices or iTunes | Photo access may be working while Apple’s device-management software, services, or drivers are not | Open or update Apple Devices or iTunes and troubleshoot the Apple software connection. |
| The iPhone appears in Finder or Apple Devices, but not File Explorer or Photos | The USB connection may work; the issue may be limited to photo access, iCloud Photos, optimized storage, or the Windows photo interface | Use the Apple app for backup and device management; troubleshoot photo access separately. |
| The iPhone appears on one computer but not another | The phone and cable are probably working; focus on the computer that cannot see it | Check that computer’s software, drivers, USB port, and security or device-management settings. |
| The iPhone appears briefly, then disconnects | An unstable cable or port, hub, insufficient power, overheating, software crash, or security conflict | Connect directly, remove adapters and hubs, try a different cable, and restart both devices. |
Use the right app for your computer
Apple’s connection instructions vary by platform. On macOS Catalina or later, use Finder; on a Windows PC, use Apple Devices or iTunes; on macOS Mojave or earlier, use iTunes. Apple’s guide to finding a connected device explains where it should appear.
- Mac: Open Finder and look for the iPhone under Locations in the sidebar. If the sidebar is hidden, choose View > Show Sidebar.
- Windows with Apple Devices: Open Apple Devices and look for the iPhone in the app’s sidebar.
- Windows with iTunes: Look for the device icon near the top of the iTunes window.
File Explorer is not the main Windows interface for managing an iPhone. It may expose photos through the DCIM folder, but Apple Devices or iTunes is used for Apple-specific backups, updates, restores, and syncing.

Try the quick, non-destructive checks
- Unlock the iPhone. Turn it on, enter the passcode, and leave the Home Screen visible while connecting. A locked phone may charge without being available for data access. Apple’s Windows device guide likewise instructs users to unlock the iPhone and respond to the trust prompt.
- Open Finder, Apple Devices, or iTunes before reconnecting. Use the app appropriate to your computer and operating-system version.
- Use a cable that supports data transfer. A cable can charge without carrying data. Use the supplied cable if available, or one from a reputable vendor that explicitly supports both data transfer and charging. Inspect its connectors for damage, fraying, bent contacts, or looseness.
- Connect directly to the computer. Avoid a keyboard, monitor, dock, or unpowered hub. Try a different USB port, and remove adapters where possible.
- Accept connection prompts. Tap Trust on the iPhone if asked. On a Mac, also approve Allow accessory to connect? if that prompt appears.
- Restart both devices. Disconnect the cable, restart the iPhone and computer, open the Apple app again, then reconnect the unlocked iPhone.
- Try another known-good data cable and another computer. A second computer is a diagnostic test: if the iPhone appears there, focus on the original computer; if it fails with multiple computers and cables, suspect the phone’s port or hardware.
Apple recommends checking the cable, USB port, computer software, and trust authorization when a device is not recognized. See Apple’s connection troubleshooting guide.
Fix a missing or rejected “Trust This Computer?” prompt
The trust exchange authorizes a computer to access data on the iPhone. Choosing Don’t Trust blocks that access. If the prompt does not appear, first disconnect and reconnect, unlock the phone, and restart both devices. Then reset its location and privacy permissions to trigger a fresh request.
- On the iPhone, open Settings.
- Tap General.
- Tap Transfer or Reset iPhone.
- Tap Reset.
- Tap Reset Location & Privacy.
- Reconnect the iPhone, unlock it, and tap Trust when asked.
This setting does not erase the iPhone, but apps may ask for location or privacy permissions again. Do not choose Erase All Content and Settings—that is a different, destructive action. Apple’s trust-alert guidance covers this reset and other trust-prompt steps.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteCheck the cable, port, and USB connection
Test the cable’s data connection
Do not assume a cable works for syncing just because it charges the phone, and do not assume every USB-C cable carries data. Test with a known-good cable explicitly rated for data transfer. If the iPhone charges but produces no connection sound or vibration and remains absent from the computer, the cable or data contacts are plausible causes.
Inspect the iPhone port safely
If the iPhone does not chime or vibrate when connected, Apple recommends checking its charging port for debris. Power the phone off, inspect the port under bright light, and do not use metal tools, liquids, force, or compressed air blown directly into the connector. If the port is loose, corroded, bent, or visibly damaged, have Apple or a qualified technician inspect it rather than repeatedly inserting a cable.

Remove hubs and adapters from the test
Plug the iPhone straight into the computer, try another USB port, and, if possible, test another computer. Hubs, keyboard ports, docks, monitors, and chains of adapters introduce extra failure points. Apple warns that a keyboard USB port may not provide enough power for update or restore operations and recommends another USB port or computer. See Apple’s USB and update/restore troubleshooting.
Mac: check Finder and accessory approval
- Connect the unlocked iPhone directly to the Mac.
- If macOS asks Allow accessory to connect?, approve it.
- Tap Trust on the iPhone if prompted.
- Open Finder and check Locations. If you cannot see the sidebar, choose View > Show Sidebar.
- Install available macOS and iOS updates, then try another cable, USB port, or Mac if the iPhone is still missing.
If the connection works when a VPN, firewall, or third-party security tool is not interfering, investigate that software rather than leaving protection disabled. Apple includes VPNs and third-party security software among possible Mac connection conflicts. See Apple’s troubleshooting steps.

Windows: check Apple Devices, iTunes, and drivers
Start with Apple Devices or iTunes
Open Apple Devices before connecting the unlocked iPhone, then accept the trust prompt and look for the device in the sidebar. If you use iTunes instead, install available updates through the Apple or Microsoft distribution channel that applies to your installation, then reconnect. Windows users do not universally need iTunes: Apple Devices is another management option.

Update Windows and inspect Device Manager
Install available Windows and Apple-software updates. If the phone is still missing, use Device Manager as a Windows diagnostic; names and categories vary by Windows version and driver state.
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Look under Portable Devices, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or for an Apple/iPhone entry with a warning icon.
- Use the available option to update or reinstall the relevant device, or select Scan for hardware changes.
- Restart Windows after driver or Apple-software changes, then reconnect the unlocked iPhone directly by USB.
Apple recommends updating Windows, iOS, Apple Devices or iTunes, and Windows drivers through Device Manager. Do not install a random driver-updater utility; it is not a substitute for Apple software or Windows’ device tools. For current platform-specific advice, see Apple’s connection guide.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Separate photo access from backup and device management
An iPhone visible in File Explorer may expose its camera photos while Apple Devices or iTunes still cannot manage it. That does not mean a full Apple backup is working. In the other direction, an iPhone visible in Apple Devices may not show every photo in File Explorer, particularly when iCloud Photos or optimized storage is involved. Use the Apple app for backups, software updates, restores, and syncing; treat the Windows photo interface as a separate access path.

Check security software without leaving the computer exposed
Antivirus, firewall, VPN, enterprise endpoint-security, USB-control, or device-management software can interfere with connections. If you control the computer, a brief, controlled test may help isolate a conflict; restore protection immediately afterward. If the connection works only while protection is paused, ask the vendor about an approved exception instead of leaving it off. On a work or school computer, contact the administrator rather than trying to bypass device restrictions.
If you need a backup urgently, protect the data first
- Do not erase or restore the iPhone just because the computer does not detect it.
- If the phone is usable, check whether a recent iCloud backup is available before trying invasive fixes.
- If another trusted computer detects the iPhone, back it up there before continuing diagnosis.
- If the phone is physically damaged, avoid repeated cable insertion and seek professional service.
Connection troubleshooting and data recovery are different tasks. Recovery mode belongs to update or restore failures, not routine USB detection; a restore may erase or overwrite data.
If the problem happens during an update or restore
Update macOS, Apple Devices, or iTunes; check the cable and USB port; connect directly rather than through a hub or keyboard; and try another computer. Record the exact error number and consult Apple’s current update and restore troubleshooting. Errors 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, and 2009 point readers to check USB connection and hardware; errors 4005, 4013, and 4014 call for retrying and investigating connection or hardware; error 4037 may mean the device needs to be unlocked. Error meanings depend on the operation and Apple’s current guidance, so treat the number as a clue rather than a diagnosis. Do not disconnect during an active update or restore unless Apple’s instructions say to do so.
When to stop troubleshooting and seek service
Service is reasonable when multiple known-good data cables and computers fail to detect the iPhone, the port is loose or visibly damaged, the phone has liquid or impact damage, connection or charging is intermittent, or repeated hardware-related restore errors occur. If the phone cannot stay powered long enough to complete testing, do not keep repeating the same steps.
Apple’s iPhone repair page offers in-person and mail-in service information and an interactive model-specific estimate. Final fees depend on inspection, coverage, model, location, and whether the repair is covered; Apple Authorized Service Providers may set their own fees. If the iPhone is detectable and you want broader backup or transfer controls, third-party tools such as iMazing are an optional workflow, not a fix for a failed USB data connection. Its connection guidance also calls for checking a data-capable cable and direct USB connection.
