What happened at the debate
The 90-minute vice-presidential debate was held in New York City on Tuesday, October 1, 2024. Republican Sen. JD Vance of Ohio and Democratic Gov. Tim Walz of Minnesota debated at 9 p.m. Eastern (8 p.m. Central, 7 p.m. Mountain and 6 p.m. Pacific). CBS News hosted the event, moderated by Norah O’Donnell and Margaret Brennan.
CBS and Paramount’s announcement set out the debate details and rules. CBS carried the event on its television network and distributed it digitally.

How viewers could watch without cable
For the live event, the simplest no-cable option was a free CBS News stream. Viewers needed internet access and a supported device, but did not need a paid live-TV subscription just to watch the debate.
- Web browser: CBSNews.com carried the stream. CBS News’ viewing guide listed the website among the free options.
- Phone or tablet: The CBS News app was another listed route, subject to app availability on the device and platform.
- YouTube: CBS News offered an official YouTube stream, useful on a browser, mobile device or supported smart TV.
- CBS News 24/7: CBS News distributed coverage through its 24/7 streaming channels, including free services such as Pluto TV where available. Sling Freestream also promoted a CBS News 24/7 simulcast.
These digital streams were not necessarily the same as a local CBS station’s broadcast: they could differ in presentation, local programming and interface. Platform, device and geographic availability can change.
Watching on a television without internet
If a local CBS affiliate is within reception range, an antenna can receive its over-the-air broadcast without a cable subscription or internet connection. Reception depends on location, terrain, building materials, antenna placement and the station’s signal; an antenna does not guarantee CBS reception everywhere. Check local broadcast coverage before buying equipment.
Paid options and live-TV services
Paramount+ also carried the debate in 2024, but it was not required because CBS News offered free digital streams. Its program page may be useful to existing subscribers, though current replay access and subscription requirements can change.
Recommended Free Tools
Viewers who already use a live-TV streaming service may be able to watch through a local CBS channel. Hulu + Live TV, YouTube TV, Fubo and DIRECTV STREAM are examples of services that may carry broadcast networks, but local channel lineups depend on ZIP code and plan. Check the provider’s local-channel listing before signing up. These services make more sense for people who want ongoing live TV than for someone seeking a single event.
| Option | Best suited to | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Free CBS News stream | Watching the debate without a cable or paid live-TV subscription | Requires internet, a supported device and an available stream |
| Paramount+ | Existing subscribers or viewers who also want its broader catalog | Unnecessary for one-event viewing when a free CBS News stream is available; current replay access may vary |
| Sling Freestream | Viewers looking for the CBS News 24/7 simulcast | Not a guarantee of a local CBS affiliate or a full cable lineup |
| Live-TV streaming service | People replacing cable and seeking a wider channel lineup | Recurring cost; CBS carriage depends on market and plan |
| Over-the-air antenna | Viewers seeking local broadcast TV without internet or a monthly subscription | Works only where reception is adequate |
If a stream will not play
- Refresh the official CBS News or YouTube page.
- Try the CBS News app instead of a browser, or switch to the official YouTube video.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data to test whether the connection is the problem.
- If a player fails to load, temporarily disable an ad blocker or privacy extension, then reload the page.
- Try another supported browser or device.
- If you need a live local broadcast, check whether your CBS affiliate is available over the air or through your existing TV provider.
- For the completed event, use an official replay rather than an unofficial social-media link, which may be delayed, interrupted or removed.
CBS announced that its special coverage on CBS News 24/7 began at 4 p.m. Eastern on debate day, while CBS broadcast programming began at 8 p.m. Eastern. Those were coverage start times; the debate itself began at 9 p.m. Eastern. See CBS News’ multiplatform coverage announcement for the original schedule.
