The right method depends on whether you mean the address used inside a Wi-Fi network or the internet-facing address that websites may see.
First, identify which address you mean
- Local Wi-Fi IP: Assigned within a Wi-Fi network, commonly by its router. It helps devices communicate on that network.
- Public IP: The internet-facing address associated with a connection. Websites may see this address or an address presented by a routing service. The router, internet provider, or cellular provider controls the connection; iPhone settings do not provide a universal public-IP selector.
- Wi-Fi MAC address: A network identifier for the device, not an IP address. Private Wi-Fi Address changes the identifier presented to a Wi-Fi network; it does not itself change the public IP.
- Privacy routing: iCloud Private Relay and VPN services affect how supported traffic is routed or presented to websites. They are not manual controls for the iPhone’s local Wi-Fi address.
Seven ways to change the connection or address
| Method | What it affects | Scope | Will it guarantee a different public IP? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Switch Wi-Fi networks | Connection path; potentially the public-facing address | The network you join | No |
| Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular | Connection path; potentially the public-facing address | Wi-Fi network or cellular connection | No |
| Use another network or Personal Hotspot | Connection path; potentially the public-facing address | The alternate network or hotspot | No |
| Use a VPN | How traffic routed through the VPN is presented to websites | Traffic using the VPN service | The cited Apple documentation does not establish provider-specific outcomes |
| Use iCloud Private Relay | Privacy routing for supported browsing | A Wi-Fi or cellular network where enabled | No arbitrary address choice is provided |
| Change local Wi-Fi settings | Local network configuration, such as IP-related settings, DNS, or HTTP Proxy | One Wi-Fi network | No |
| Ask the administrator or change router DHCP settings | Local address assignment by the network | Devices on that network | No |
1. Switch to another Wi-Fi network
Connecting to a different Wi-Fi network changes the route your iPhone uses to reach the internet and may result in a different public IP. Apple’s iPhone guide explains how to join Wi-Fi networks, but does not promise that switching networks will produce any particular public address. Apple’s iPhone guide to connecting to the internet

2. Switch between Wi-Fi and cellular data
Turning Wi-Fi off and using cellular data, or joining Wi-Fi again, changes the access network. Websites may consequently see a different address, but Apple does not guarantee a specific public-IP result. This is a change of connection path, not a way to pick an address.

3. Use another network or a Personal Hotspot
Joining a different network—including a Personal Hotspot—also changes the connection path. Apple documents joining nearby Personal Hotspots in its iPhone guide. Whether websites see a different public IP depends on how that network’s provider routes and assigns addresses; a hotspot does not guarantee a new one. 4. Use a VPN service
A VPN is the clearest service-based option when your goal is for websites to see traffic routed through a VPN server rather than directly through your connection. It applies to traffic using that service; provider locations, privacy practices, performance, and terms vary and need provider-specific verification. Apple’s documentation about iCloud Private Relay is not an endorsement or test of third-party VPNs.
5. Use iCloud Private Relay if eligible
Private Relay is an Apple privacy feature for supported browsing, not a manual public-IP chooser. To manage it for a particular connection, open Settings > Wi-Fi, tap the information button next to the connected network, and manage Limit IP Address Tracking. For cellular, open Settings > Cellular, select the relevant line if needed, then manage Limit IP Address Tracking. Labels can vary by iOS version. Some websites and networks use IP addresses for filtering, monitoring, rate limiting, auditing, or other network-based controls. If a service does not work as expected, try changing the setting only for the affected network when possible; disabling IP tracking reduces the privacy protection provided by Private Relay on that connection. Apple: About iCloud Private Relay
6. Change settings for the connected Wi-Fi network
To reach the network settings, open Settings > Wi-Fi and tap the information button beside the connected network. Apple documents options such as DNS and HTTP Proxy in those network details. If you configure a manual local IP, it applies within that Wi-Fi network; it does not change the address arbitrary websites see. Incorrect local settings can also prevent the iPhone from connecting properly, so use values supplied by the network administrator. Apple’s iPhone guide to connecting to the internet

7. Ask the network administrator about DHCP
A router commonly assigns local addresses through DHCP. If your concern is the iPhone’s local address on a home, office, or managed Wi-Fi network, ask its administrator about the router’s assignment settings rather than expecting an iPhone-side change to alter the public IP. Apple describes a DHCP lease as the period an assigned address is reserved. Its router guidance recommends lease times of 8 hours for home or office networks and 1 hour for hotspots or guest networks; these are network recommendations, not evidence that renewing a lease changes a public IP. Apple: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
Private Wi-Fi Address is not an IP address setting
iPhone uses a private network address—a MAC address—on each Wi-Fi network. On iOS 18 and later, Private Wi-Fi Address offers Off, Fixed, and Rotating modes. Fixed does not rotate; Rotating changes periodically. Apple recommends leaving private addressing enabled for networks and software that support it. This setting is intended to reduce tracking across networks, not to change the iPhone’s local or public IP. Choose the method that matches your goal
- Need a different route to the internet? Try another Wi-Fi network, cellular data, or a hotspot. A different public IP is possible but not guaranteed.
- Want websites to see traffic routed through a service? Consider a VPN, checking its provider-specific terms and privacy details, or use Private Relay for supported browsing if eligible.
- Need to change the iPhone’s local network address? Check the connected Wi-Fi settings or ask the network administrator about DHCP.
- Want to reduce Wi-Fi network tracking? Keep Private Wi-Fi Address enabled where supported; it changes a MAC identifier, not an IP address.
Can airplane mode get a new IP?
Airplane mode interrupts wireless connections, but turning it off does not guarantee that a cellular provider assigns a different public IP. The cited Apple documentation does not establish carrier-specific reassignment behavior. If the goal is simply to change the route, connect to a different Wi-Fi network or switch between Wi-Fi and cellular; do not assume either guarantees a new public address.
