The key difference is timing: Google documents Android’s trigger as 72 hours locked, while Apple describes its trigger only as “a prolonged period” and does not state an exact interval in its cited security guide.
How the two features compare
| Feature | iPhone Automatic Restart | Android Inactivity Reboot |
|---|---|---|
| Documented context | Apple’s security guide covers iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 or later. | Google documents it as part of Advanced Protection for Android. |
| When it restarts | After “a prolonged period” locked; Apple’s cited guide does not give a precise interval. | After the phone remains locked for 72 hours. |
| Security effect | Moves the device from After First Unlock to Before First Unlock and purges sensitive security keys and transient data from memory. | Makes user data unreadable until the next fresh unlock. |
| Availability and controls | Check the installed OS version and, on managed devices, organizational settings. Administrators can use IdleRebootAllowed on iOS 18.4/iPadOS 18.4 or later; it is off by default on supervised devices. |
Check Advanced Protection settings on the actual phone. Google’s help page does not establish support across every Android maker and model or specify equivalent administrator controls. |
What changes after a reboot
On iPhone, Apple says the Secure Enclave monitors unlock events. If the device remains locked for a prolonged period, it restarts and transitions from After First Unlock to Before First Unlock, purging sensitive security keys and transient data from memory. See Apple’s Protecting user data in the face of attack.

Google says Android Inactivity Reboot makes user data unreadable until a fresh unlock takes place. That is a security-state change, not a data wipe: neither feature is described in the cited documentation as erasing the phone or encrypting it for the first time. The documentation does not establish that either feature guarantees protection against forensic extraction.
When does each phone restart?
Android: 72 hours locked
Google’s Advanced Protection for Android help page specifies an automatic reboot if the phone remains locked for 72 hours. The page’s publication date is not stated. Treat this as Google’s documented threshold, not a threshold confirmed for iPhone.
#1 Best Overall
- Vibrant 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR display with OLED technology. Action mode for smooth, steady, handheld videos.
iPhone: a prolonged period, with no exact interval stated
Apple’s security guide says “a prolonged period” without giving a number of hours or days. Do not assume the iPhone trigger is precisely 72 hours: the cited Apple documentation does not establish that.
Availability and managed-device considerations
Check Advanced Protection on your Android phone
Google places Inactivity Reboot within Advanced Protection, but its help page is not a compatibility list for all Android devices. Look in your phone’s Advanced Protection settings to see whether the feature is offered; device support may vary.
Rank #2
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Check iOS version and management settings
Apple documents the Automatic Restart behavior for iOS 18.1 and iPadOS 18.1 or later. For supervised devices, Apple documents the IdleRebootAllowed management setting on iOS 18.4 and iPadOS 18.4 or later, with the setting off by default. Apple also warns that a restart may cause Wi-Fi loss and disrupt device-management operations. Administrators should account for that when managing devices remotely. See Apple’s security guide.
Which difference matters most?
If you need a precise documented timer, Android’s 72-hour threshold is explicit in Google’s help page; Apple’s cited guide does not provide an equivalent number. For both platforms, the security purpose is to require a fresh unlock after the phone has been left locked long enough for the feature to trigger. Availability and management impact are device- and platform-specific, so check the settings on the phone rather than assuming every device exposes the feature. Android’s broader System security best practices documentation provides additional platform context, but does not change the threshold stated in Google’s Advanced Protection help.
