If your Mac will not automatically join your iPhone’s Personal Hotspot, first check the Mac’s hotspot preference, then confirm the devices meet Apple’s Instant Hotspot requirements. Set Ask to join hotspots to Automatic, enable Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth on both devices, and make sure they are nearby and signed in to the same Apple Account—or covered by Family Sharing. The steps below are practical checks based on Apple’s guidance, not nine separately published Apple fixes. Apple documents the Mac’s Automatic option for macOS Tahoe 26 or later; its guidance cited here does not establish any macOS 27-specific behavior.
How Auto-Join and Instant Hotspot work
Auto-Join is a preference on the Mac that controls whether it joins a Personal Hotspot automatically. Instant Hotspot is Apple’s way for nearby devices to share an iPhone’s cellular connection. The Mac must be able to discover the iPhone and meet Apple’s account and wireless requirements; a carrier plan must also support Personal Hotspot. Apple’s Instant Hotspot instructions describe the Auto-Join setting and account requirements.

Instant Hotspot shares the iPhone’s cellular connection, not its Wi‑Fi connection. Apple says Allow Others to Join is not required for an Apple device using Instant Hotspot under the same Apple Account. That setting can matter for ordinary hotspot connections from devices outside the same-account or Family Sharing arrangement.

1. Set the Mac to join hotspots automatically
On the Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Wi‑Fi. Find Ask to join hotspots and choose Automatic. Apple says this option is available in macOS Tahoe 26 or later. If you would rather approve each connection, choose Ask to Join; the Mac will prompt you instead of joining automatically. Apple’s instructions for Auto-Join Hotspot cover this preference.

2. Turn on Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth on both devices
Check that Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth are on for both the Mac and iPhone. Instant Hotspot uses these radios to find and connect nearby devices. If either is off, turn it on and check the Mac’s Wi‑Fi menu again. Apple lists both as prerequisites in its Instant Hotspot guidance and Mac connection guide.
3. Move the devices closer
Keep the iPhone and Mac within 10 metres (30 feet), Apple’s stated proximity guidance for using the iPhone’s connection with a Mac. For a quick test, place them close together and check whether the hotspot appears. Apple’s Mac guide gives the distance requirement.

4. Check the Apple Account or Family Sharing setup
For Instant Hotspot, the devices should use the same Apple Account. If they use different accounts, Family Sharing must be configured to allow the connection. Check the account signed in on each device and, if using Family Sharing, confirm that hotspot access is permitted for the relevant family member. Apple explains both options in its Instant Hotspot instructions.

On the iPhone, open Settings > Personal Hotspot and check whether the feature is available. Also confirm that cellular data is on. If Personal Hotspot is missing or unavailable, Apple advises checking with your carrier; the plan must support the feature, and additional fees may apply. 6. Select the iPhone manually from the Mac’s Wi‑Fi menu
Click the Wi‑Fi menu on the Mac and select the iPhone’s name. Apple notes that it can take a few seconds for the hotspot to appear. If a manual selection connects, the iPhone’s hotspot is discoverable and usable, so revisit the Mac’s Auto-Join preference. If it does not appear or connect, continue with the radio, account, and availability checks above. Apple’s Mac guide describes selecting the iPhone from the Wi‑Fi menu.
7. Update both devices and restart them
Install available software updates for iOS and macOS, then restart the iPhone and Mac and test again. Apple includes updating and restarting among its troubleshooting steps for Personal Hotspot problems. These steps can address software issues, but they do not change carrier support or account requirements. See Apple’s troubleshooting steps.

8. Test Maximize Compatibility on supported iPhones
If the iPhone is an iPhone 12 or later and wireless compatibility seems to be the issue, try Settings > Personal Hotspot > Maximize Compatibility, if that option is available. Test the connection, then decide whether to leave it on: Apple warns that it may reduce performance and Wi‑Fi security. Apple documents the option and caveats in its iOS 27 iPhone guide and hotspot troubleshooting guidance.

9. Test another connection method
Apple documents Bluetooth and a cable compatible with the ports on both devices as alternatives to Wi‑Fi. These methods can test or bypass wireless Auto-Join; a cable is a fallback connection, not a repair for the Mac’s Auto-Join setting. If a wired connection works while wireless Auto-Join does not, that points toward a wireless discovery or configuration issue, but does not identify a specific cause. Apple’s Mac guide explains the available connection methods.

What the result tells you
- Manual Wi‑Fi selection works, but Auto-Join does not: Check that the Mac’s Ask to join hotspots preference is set to Automatic.
- The iPhone never appears in the Wi‑Fi menu: Recheck proximity, Wi‑Fi and Bluetooth, Apple Account or Family Sharing, and whether Personal Hotspot is available.
- Wired tethering works but wireless does not: The cellular connection can reach the Mac over the cable, but the result does not prove which wireless setting or discovery step is failing.
- Personal Hotspot is missing or unavailable on the iPhone: Check cellular data and ask the carrier whether the plan supports Personal Hotspot.
Apple’s cited troubleshooting guidance does not establish resetting network settings, deleting preference files, changing DNS, or disabling VPN or security software as standard fixes for this specific Auto-Join problem. Avoid treating those actions as guaranteed solutions.
