Can you peel off the inner layer yourself?
Do not treat the word “replaceable” as DIY guidance. Android Authority attributes the description to Kate Bergeron, Apple’s vice-president of Hardware Engineering, in an interview with creator @angietutorials. Bergeron reportedly said the layer can be peeled off and replaced, but the report notes she did not explicitly call it user-replaceable. It gives no owner repair steps or official procedure.
Because the layer is described as part of the folding-display construction, avoid lifting it or applying a generic protector over the inner display unless Apple or the accessory maker confirms that option is compatible and provides instructions. For a worn or damaged layer, ask Apple or an authorized service provider how it can be assessed and replaced.
What the reported $19 fee does—and does not—cover
Android Authority reports a $19 fee for cover-layer replacement with AppleCare+. That is a secondary report, not a universal quote: the source does not give the out-of-coverage price, and current eligibility, regional availability, and final charges are not established here. Check with Apple or an authorized service provider for the terms that apply to your device, location, and plan.

The same reporting distinguishes cover-layer replacement from damage to the folding inner display. Do not assume the reported layer fee applies to a damaged display panel; ask the service provider to identify the repair category and quote the applicable charge.
What “minimize the crease” means
The matte coating is reported to reduce how visible the crease looks. That is an optical purpose, not evidence that the display’s physical fold disappears or that the layer is immune to wear. Bergeron reportedly said Apple had engineered the layer to help it wear over a long period, but the launch-era reporting does not establish real-world lifespan or replacement experience.
