With Apple’s classic Depth Effect, an eligible photo becomes a layered Lock Screen composition: the subject can appear in front of part of the clock. The change is visual layering, not a new file type, accessory, or separate wallpaper download.
Apple also offers Spatial Scene, a newer named feature that gives eligible photos a 3D treatment. It is related in appearance but not identical to Depth Effect. Apple’s documented Spatial Scene workflow requires an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 26, and the 3D effect appears only on the Lock Screen.

The short answer: the clock can sit behind the photo subject
With a regular wallpaper, the image remains behind the Lock Screen interface. The clock and widgets are drawn over it without the photo subject being placed in front of them.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDepth Effect changes that composition. When the selected photo supports layering, iPhone can separate a foreground subject and let it overlap part of the clock. Apple describes this as a multilayered effect. It does not turn the image into a different kind of wallpaper file, and it does not require a physical product.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
The effect is available only when the chosen wallpaper and its composition support it. Apple does not promise that every subject can overlap every clock layout, and its cited documentation does not describe the segmentation or rendering technology behind the result. What you can reliably judge is the visible arrangement on the Lock Screen.
Apple’s custom Lock Screen guide identifies the Depth Effect control and notes that available controls depend on the wallpaper you choose.
Depth Effect, regular wallpaper and Spatial Scene compared
| Feature | Regular wallpaper | Classic Depth Effect | Spatial Scene |
|---|---|---|---|
| Appearance | Flat background behind the interface | Multilayered photo composition; a foreground subject may overlap the clock | 3D treatment for an eligible photo |
| Photo requirement | No special layering qualification stated | The photo must support layering; availability depends on the selected wallpaper | Eligible photos are offered in the Spatial Scene workflow; Apple says they typically have high-quality lighting and clear subject/background separation or a landscape orientation |
| Where the documented effect appears | Where you assign the wallpaper | Apple documents it as a Lock Screen customization | Only the Lock Screen displays the 3D effect, even when a wallpaper pair is set |
| Version context | Not stated as a special requirement in the cited instructions | Availability is determined by the wallpaper and current iOS controls | Apple’s cited instructions specify iPhone 12 or later with iOS 26 |
Depth Effect and Spatial Scene should therefore be treated as separate labels. Depth Effect is the multilayered clock-overlap option described in the Lock Screen guide. Spatial Scene is Apple’s newer 3D option, with its own eligibility and device requirement. A photo that works with one is not automatically guaranteed to work with the other.
What you actually see with classic Depth Effect
The subject can interrupt the clock
The defining visual change is the overlap: part of the clock can appear tucked behind the photo’s foreground subject. This is why portraits, people standing in front of a scene, or objects with a clear outline can feel more dimensional than the same image used as a regular background.
The rest of the Lock Screen remains a Lock Screen
Depth Effect does not replace the clock, remove widgets, or create a separate animated wallpaper category. It changes the relationship between the photograph and the interface. The image is still selected as a wallpaper, and the result is viewed while customizing or using the Lock Screen.
The result depends on the chosen composition
Apple’s documentation does not promise a particular amount of overlap or compatibility with every clock arrangement. A subject may be too low, too close to the clock, or otherwise unsuitable for the available layout. The practical test is whether the Depth Effect control appears and whether the preview produces a useful overlap rather than obscuring the information you need.

Which photos are likely to work?
Classic Depth Effect eligibility
For classic Depth Effect, Apple’s wording is intentionally conditional: the photo must support layering. The guide does not publish a complete checklist of camera models, subjects, resolutions, or guaranteed framing rules. If the control is missing for a selected image, iPhone is not offering that image for the effect in the current Lock Screen configuration.

Spatial Scene characteristics
Apple gives more descriptive guidance for Spatial Scene. Its support page says eligible photos typically feature high-quality lighting, a clear separation between the subject and background, or a landscape orientation. “Typically” is important: those characteristics improve the fit with Apple’s stated criteria but do not guarantee eligibility.
For Spatial Scene, a clearly outlined subject against a distinct background is a sensible starting point. For either feature, preview the image with the clock and widgets visible instead of judging the photograph only in the Photos app.
How to inspect a candidate image
- Choose a photo in which the intended foreground subject is visually distinct from the background.
- Open Lock Screen customization and select the image as the wallpaper.
- Look for the Depth Effect control or the Spatial Scene control, depending on the workflow you are using.
- Check the preview with the clock position and widgets you plan to keep.
- Turn the effect off and on, when the control is available, to compare the layered or 3D treatment with the ordinary flat version.
This preview-based comparison is a practical way to evaluate the composition; it is not a guarantee that another clock style or future iOS release will produce the same result.
How to turn on classic Depth Effect
Apple’s custom Lock Screen instructions place the option inside Lock Screen editing. Labels can vary with the wallpaper and iOS version, so the control may be shown directly or inside a More menu.
- Open the iPhone’s Lock Screen customization interface and choose a photo wallpaper.
- With a photo that supports layering selected, look for the Depth Effect control.
- If the control is not shown directly, open More and choose Depth Effect when that option is offered.
- Review the clock overlap in the preview. Adjust the photo or Lock Screen layout if the subject covers information you need.
- Save the Lock Screen only after confirming that the layered arrangement is the one you want.
The important condition is not a hidden purchase or download. The control appears only when the selected wallpaper and current layout support it. Apple’s guide records the control as part of Lock Screen customization, not as a separate image-editing operation.

How Spatial Scene works on supported iPhones
Spatial Scene is a separate workflow from classic Depth Effect. Apple’s current wallpaper instructions specify an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 26 for the documented process.
- Open Settings → Wallpaper.
- Tap Add New Wallpaper.
- Choose Photos, then select the Spatial Scene tab.
- Choose a photo and wait for Generating Spatial Scene to finish.
- Tap Add.
- Choose a wallpaper pair or customize the Home Screen separately.
Apple says only the Lock Screen displays the 3D effect. The Home Screen can still be customized independently, so setting a pair does not mean that the Home Screen receives the same 3D treatment.
Apple also notes that an eligible photo may be selected outside the Spatial Scene category. During Lock Screen customization, the Spatial Scene control can appear and let you turn the effect on or off. If the control is absent, iPhone is not offering that image for Spatial Scene in the current setup.
The complete workflow and device qualification are documented on Apple’s Change your iPhone wallpaper page.
Lock Screen versus Home Screen: do not assume the effects match
The clock overlap associated with classic Depth Effect is described in Apple’s Lock Screen guide, so evaluate it on the Lock Screen where the clock is present. The cited instructions do not establish a matching Depth Effect behavior for the Home Screen.

For Spatial Scene, Apple is explicit: the 3D effect is Lock Screen-only, even when you create a wallpaper pair. You can use a separate Home Screen appearance instead of expecting the 3D treatment to carry over.
A regular wallpaper is different because it is simply the background assigned to whichever screen you customize. Its appearance does not depend on a subject being separated from its background or on a 3D-generation step.
Requirements and version context
| Question | What the cited Apple documentation establishes |
|---|---|
| Does Depth Effect need a special file or accessory? | No. The instructions use an eligible photo in iPhone’s wallpaper and Lock Screen controls. |
| Does every photo support classic Depth Effect? | No. Apple says availability depends on the wallpaper/photo and that the photo must support layering. |
| What is required for the documented Spatial Scene workflow? | iPhone 12 or later with iOS 26. |
| Does Spatial Scene apply to both screens? | No. Apple states that only the Lock Screen displays the 3D effect; the Home Screen can be customized separately. |
| Are the labels permanent? | No guarantee is made. Apple’s pages are software documentation, and labels can change in later iOS releases. |
The Apple pages cited here are regional support documents: the wallpaper page is the Australia site and the custom Lock Screen guide is the South Africa site. The feature descriptions are Apple’s, but menu wording and availability can change with iOS updates and regional documentation. The requirements above reflect the pages reviewed on October 13, 2026.

Use a regular wallpaper when clarity matters most
Choose the ordinary flat presentation when the photograph is mainly a texture, pattern, skyline, abstract image, or busy scene without a distinct foreground subject. It is also the predictable choice when you want the clock and widgets to remain unobstructed.
Use classic Depth Effect for a layered portrait or subject
Depth Effect is the better fit when the image has a clear subject that can sit naturally in front of part of the clock. The payoff is a stronger sense of depth on the Lock Screen, while the setup remains a normal photo-wallpaper selection.
Use Spatial Scene when you specifically want Apple’s 3D treatment
Spatial Scene is the option to test when you have an iPhone 12 or later on iOS 26 and a photo that fits Apple’s described characteristics. It involves a generation step and is limited to the Lock Screen, so it is not simply a renamed Depth Effect switch.

Compare the preview, not the marketing label
Two photos with similar subjects can produce very different results. Check the clock overlap, widget legibility, and overall balance in the actual Lock Screen editor. If the effect makes the time hard to read, the regular version may be the more useful choice even when the photo qualifies.
Troubleshooting when the effect is missing or disappointing
No Depth Effect button appears
- Confirm that you are editing a Lock Screen photo rather than looking at the Home Screen.
- Check the More menu; Apple says the control can be located there for a photo that supports layering.
- Try another image with a more distinct subject/background boundary.
- Change the Lock Screen arrangement and preview again, because available controls depend on the chosen wallpaper and layout.
If the control still does not appear, Apple’s documentation provides no supported way to force that particular image into the effect. Use the regular wallpaper or select another photo.
The subject does not overlap the clock well
- Move to a photo in which the subject occupies a different part of the frame.
- Review the clock and widget placement in the preview.
- Disable the effect if it hides information or creates an awkward crop.
Apple does not promise a particular overlap for every clock style, so an effect that is technically available may still be a poor visual fit.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Spatial Scene is unavailable
- Verify the documented platform requirement: iPhone 12 or later with iOS 26.
- Enter through Settings → Wallpaper → Add New Wallpaper → Photos → Spatial Scene so you are using the supported workflow.
- Try a different image with strong lighting and clearer subject/background separation, or a landscape-oriented photo.
- Wait for the “Generating Spatial Scene” step to complete before judging the result.
Those photo characteristics are Apple’s typical guidance, not a guarantee. An image can look suitable and still not be offered as eligible.
What these features do not change
- They do not require buying a case, screen accessory, or physical wallpaper product.
- They do not turn the chosen photograph into a universally 3D image for other apps.
- They do not guarantee that the same composition will work with every clock or widget arrangement.
- They do not make classic Depth Effect and Spatial Scene interchangeable names.
The practical difference is therefore narrow but visible: regular wallpaper keeps the image behind the interface; classic Depth Effect can layer a subject over the clock; Spatial Scene applies Apple’s separate 3D treatment to eligible photos on the supported Lock Screen workflow.
Bottom line
Choose a regular wallpaper for a dependable flat background. Choose classic Depth Effect when an eligible photo has a foreground subject that benefits from overlapping the clock. Choose Spatial Scene only when you meet its iPhone 12-or-later and iOS 26 requirement and want the newer Lock Screen-only 3D treatment. In every case, the Lock Screen preview is the final authority on whether the composition looks useful.
