To check whether an iPhone is unlocked, open Settings > General > About and read the Carrier Lock entry. No SIM restrictions means the iPhone is unlocked for use with another carrier. If a carrier is listed instead, Apple’s guidance for preowned iPhones says the device can be used only with that carrier.
Where to find Carrier Lock on an iPhone
- Open Settings.
- Tap General, then About.
- Scroll to Carrier Lock and read the value.
Apple’s iPhone User Guide confirms that Carrier Lock appears on the About screen. You do not need to swap SIM cards or use a third-party checker to view the setting. Apple’s unlock instructions explain what the status means and what to do next.

What the Carrier Lock result means
- No SIM restrictions: The iPhone is unlocked and can be used with another carrier, subject to the carrier’s service and device compatibility.
- A carrier is named: Apple’s preowned-iPhone guidance says the phone can be used only with that carrier. Contact that carrier to confirm the lock and ask whether the phone is eligible for unlocking.
- The entry is missing or unclear: Ask the current carrier to verify the phone’s lock status rather than assuming it is unlocked.
Who can unlock an iPhone
Only the iPhone’s current carrier can process an unlock; Apple says it cannot unlock the phone for use with another carrier. The carrier may take a few days to complete a request, so ask it to confirm when the unlock has been applied. Apple’s carrier-unlock guidance provides the official follow-up steps.
What to do after the carrier unlocks it
Using a different carrier’s physical SIM
After the current carrier confirms the unlock, insert the new carrier’s SIM to activate the iPhone.

If you do not have another SIM
Apple’s instructions are to back up the iPhone, erase it, and restore it from that backup.
If a SIM compatibility message remains
For iOS 14 or later, check Settings > General > About and confirm that Carrier Lock says No SIM restrictions. If the status is missing or the message persists, contact the carrier. For iOS 13 or earlier, Apple advises asking the carrier to confirm the unlock was applied, then restoring the iPhone to factory settings and restoring it from a backup.

Checking a preowned iPhone
Check Carrier Lock as part of a broader inspection, not as proof that a used phone is otherwise suitable. Apple also advises buyers to understand the seller’s return policy and not to buy an iPhone with Activation Lock enabled. Carrier Lock and Activation Lock are separate checks: an unlocked phone may still have an account restriction that prevents you from setting it up. An iPhone must not be carrier-locked to use another carrier’s travel eSIM. An unlocked phone may work with a local carrier or a worldwide provider, but coverage, plan data and duration, and device and provider support vary.
