What the Slow Charger message means
On iPhone, Slow Charger is an iOS charging status that typically appears when the device detects conditions that limit charging speed. In plain terms: your iPhone is not receiving (or is choosing not to accept) the power level it expects for faster charging.
The limitation usually comes from one of these buckets:
#1 Best Overall
- DESIGNED BY APPLE — This 20W USB‑C Compact Power Adapter offers fast, efficient charging at home, in the office, or on the go.
- FAST AND CONVENIENT CHARGING — Pair with iPhone 8 or later for fast charging — up to 50 percent battery in around 30 minutes* for iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Pro when paired with the 30W USB-C Power Adapter. Compatible with any USB-C enabled device.
- Testing conducted by Apple in August 2024 using preproduction iPhone 16, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, and iPhone 16 Pro Max units and software, and Apple MagSafe Chargers (1-meter Model A2580 and 2-meter Model A3250) with Apple USB-C Power Adapter (30W Model A2164). Fast-charge testing conducted with drained iPhone units. Times measured from the appearance of the Apple logo as the unit started up. Charge time varies with settings and environmental factors; actual results will vary.
- WHAT’S IN THE BOX — Apple 20W USB-C Compact Power Adapter only. Charging cable sold separately.
- Insufficient charger wattage (the adapter can’t supply enough power)
- Low-power or limited charging mode (iOS is throttling to protect the battery)
- Accessory negotiation issues (USB-C/Lightning handshake fails or is degraded)
- Temperature constraints (battery or environment is too hot/cold)
- Damaged cable/port (higher resistance or intermittent connection)
Why your iPhone charges slowly (common causes)
Slow charging is rarely random. Here are the most common causes that trigger Slow Charger on iPhone:
- Old USB-A adapters (especially 5W wall cubes) can only deliver a slower charge.
- USB-C chargers that don’t support proper charging profiles may charge slowly or inconsistently.
- Charge cable problems (fraying, oxidation, poor strain relief, or a non-MFi cable) can reduce data/power negotiation.
- Dirty or loose Lightning/USB-C port causes voltage drop and iOS throttling.
- Heat from direct sunlight, gaming, or a warm room makes iOS slow things down to protect the battery.
- Charging through a hub/dock can cap power output or introduce voltage sag.
- Wireless charging limits by design (MagSafe and Qi generally cap output lower than wired fast charging).
Check the basics first (fast diagnostics)
Before buying anything new, do these quick checks. They solve the majority of slow-charging reports.
- Look at the power source: Is it a wall outlet, laptop USB port, car charger, or power bank?
- Swap one variable: Use a different wall adapter or a different cable. Pick just one change at a time.
- Touch the cable and adapter: If they’re unusually hot, iOS may throttle for safety.
- Check the iPhone port: If you see lint or debris, charging can become unstable.
- Restart the charging attempt: Unplug, wait 10 seconds, then plug back in firmly.
Fixes you can try immediately
These steps are practical and low-risk. Do them in order.
Recommended Free Tools
- Use a known-good cable (ideally Apple or a reputable MFi-certified cable). Try a second cable if possible.
- Use a wall charger with enough wattage. A 5W adapter often triggers slow charging for modern iPhones.
- Try a different outlet. Some outlets are on weak circuits or loose wiring that causes voltage drop.
- Remove the case (temporarily) if your iPhone is running warm or you’re using MagSafe accessories that get hot.
- Charge while the phone is idle. If you’re gaming or using navigation, iOS may throttle.
- Check for temperature: Move to a cooler room, away from sunlight.
- Clean the port gently using a dry, anti-static method (avoid metal tools). If lint is present, power contact can improve.
Choose the right charger and cable (wattage and compatibility)
Slow Charger is often just a mismatch between your iPhone and the power adapter.
Here’s a practical way to choose:
| Adapter/Port Type | Common output | Typical result on modern iPhones |
|---|---|---|
| USB-A 5W (classic “iPhone charger bricks”) | 5W | May show Slow Charger or very slow charging |
| USB-A “quick charge” adapters (varies) | 10W–18W (depends) | Sometimes still limited; reliability varies by brand |
| USB-C Power Delivery (PD) wall charger | 20W+, typically 20W/30W/45W+ | Most consistent for fast charging (if supported by the iPhone model) |
| USB-C to Lightning cable | Data + power negotiation required | Reliable only when the cable is in good shape |
| MagSafe (wireless) | Wireless power limits | May never match the speed of wired charging |
| Qi wireless pads | Device- and pad-dependent | Often slower than MagSafe and wired |
Rule of thumb: for wired fast charging, use a USB-C PD wall charger (20W or higher) paired with a high-quality cable that supports charging and proper negotiation.
How to verify whether you actually have enough power
If your adapter is rated “fast charging,” you still need to confirm it can deliver what your iPhone expects.
- Check the charger label for wattage and supported profiles (often printed as PD: 20W, 30W, 45W).
- Verify multi-port behavior: Many chargers reduce output when multiple ports are used. Example: Port 1 may be 30W alone, but only 20W when Port 2 is active.
- Avoid laptop USB ports for testing. Some ports provide inconsistent power depending on sleep/charging settings.
- Test with a plain wall outlet before blaming the iPhone.
If you have access to another charger with a clearly labeled wattage, use it to eliminate guesswork.

Fix: switch to a USB-C PD wall charger (20W+ is a reliable starting point) and use a good USB-C to Lightning (or correct cable for your model).
Using a USB-C charger but the iPhone still says Slow Charger
This often happens when the charger is underpowered for your model, the cable is limiting power, or the port is not making a stable connection.
Fix: try a different cable first, then a different charger. Also check heat—warm adapters commonly cause throttling.
Using a damaged or non-certified cable
Even small cable damage can raise resistance, causing iOS to reduce charge speed or treat the session as unreliable.
Fix: replace the cable. If you see fraying near the ends or bent connectors, don’t keep “testing” it—swap it.
Charging on a car charger or power bank
Car outlets and power banks can provide lower voltage under load, especially with multiple devices connected.
Fix: use a power bank with USB-C PD that clearly lists wattage and supports your charging profile, or plug into a wall outlet to confirm the iPhone itself charges normally.
Charging wirelessly (MagSafe or Qi)
Wireless charging is designed for convenience, not maximum speed. You can still see a “slow” label depending on power and battery temperature.
Fix: ensure the iPhone aligns correctly on the MagSafe puck/pad, keep it away from heat sources, and compare wired charging vs wireless to isolate the cause.

Charging with a dock or hub
Docks/hubs sometimes cap output or introduce a charge handshake failure.
Fix: bypass the hub and connect directly to the wall adapter. If direct charging is fast, the dock/hub is the bottleneck.
Using a fast charger that was rated for a different device
Some chargers are marketed broadly as “fast,” but the iPhone may not receive a compatible power profile.
Fix: look for USB-C Power Delivery (PD) specs on the charger. Then test with a known iPhone-compatible USB-C to Lightning cable.

How to check: Settings > Battery > Low Power Mode.
Edge cases: heat, battery health, and accessories
Even with a correct charger, these conditions can trigger slow-charging messages.
- Heat under a bed/couch or under a thick case: cooling is limited; iPhone throttles.
- Battery health issues: a significantly degraded battery can cause more aggressive management.
- MagSafe accessory interference: thick cases and misalignment can affect efficiency.
- Dirty connectors: lint or corrosion increases resistance and causes voltage drop.
When to suspect a hardware issue
If you’ve tried multiple known-good chargers, multiple cables, and different outlets—and you still repeatedly see Slow Charger—it may be hardware-related.
- Port instability: cable falls out easily, charging only works at certain angles.
- Intermittent charging: the icon repeatedly changes or pauses after small movements.
- Persistent debris: lint keeps returning quickly or the port looks visibly damaged.
- Charging is slow no matter what: even with a high-watt USB-C PD wall adapter and a new certified cable.
At that point, an Apple Authorized Service Provider or Apple Support can inspect the charging port and battery health safely.
Frequently asked questions
Does Slow Charger mean my battery is failing?
Not necessarily. The message usually means power delivery is limited (charger/cable/temperature). If it happens with multiple chargers and cables, then battery health or port issues become more likely.
Will a 5W charger always trigger Slow Charger?
For many modern iPhones, yes, it’s common. iOS may show slower charging indicators because the adapter can’t deliver fast-charging power levels.
Can my iPhone charge fast if I use a USB port on my laptop?
Sometimes, but it depends on the laptop’s USB-C wattage and power profile. Many laptop ports won’t match a dedicated USB-C PD wall charger.
Why does it say Slow Charger only when my phone is hot?
iOS throttles charging to protect the battery when temperature rises. Let the iPhone cool down and try again.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
What’s the safest way to clean the charging port?
Use gentle, dry cleaning methods and avoid metal tools. If you’re unsure, Apple Support can guide you or perform cleaning under proper conditions.
Bottom Line
Slow Charger is iPhone’s way of saying the charging session is limited—most commonly due to a low-watt adapter, a questionable cable, heat, or a connection problem. Swap charger and cable first, then check temperature and the charging port for debris.
If you still get slow-charging behavior after testing with a known-good USB-C PD wall charger (20W+) and a reliable cable, it’s time to suspect an issue with the port or battery and get it checked.
