iPhone Backup Software for PC: 5 No-iTunes Options and How to Choose

For Windows users who want an iPhone backup stored on a computer, five third-party options to compare are iMazing, CopyTrans Shelbee, Wondershare Dr.Fone, Tenorshare iCareFone, and iMobie AnyTrans. This is a feature-based shortlist, not a hands-on ranking: the available product details are vendor descriptions, and there is no independent head-to-head evidence here establishing which tool is fastest or most reliable.

You do not need third-party software just to make a local backup. Apple’s Windows guidance says to use the Apple Devices app if it is installed, or iTunes otherwise. These alternatives may suit people who want extra backup-management features beyond Apple’s standard workflow. Apple’s encrypted-backup guidance also matters whichever interface you choose.

How these five iPhone backup tools differ

The order below is an editorial shortlist, not a score or test result. Compare the feature you need—such as snapshot history, an external-drive destination, or selective restore—and confirm the current Windows requirements, included modules, and license terms with the vendor before installing.

Which option should you consider?

For backup history and browsing: iMazing

iMazing’s documentation describes multiple local snapshots, backup browsing, restore, scheduled backups, and storage on a chosen computer, external drive, or NAS. It also says iMazing does not currently work with iCloud backups. These are vendor-described capabilities, not independently verified test results. See iMazing’s general information and its Using iMazing FAQ for current details.

#1 Best Overall
SSK Portable SSD 1TB External Solid State Hard Drive USB C Up to 1050MB/s

  • Data Security: Solid state drives S.M.A.R.T. health diagnostics and adaptive TRIM optimizing data block management ensures consistent write speeds and extends the longevity of the portable SSD
  • USB-C & USB-A Cable: Both cables featuring rapid USB 3.2 Gen2, this USB SSD effortlessly bridges devices, enabling seamless cross-platform file transfers and backup between computers, smartphones, tablets and iPhone
  • Always Fast: No slowdowns for large file transfers. With SLC caching (25% of current available capacity allocated as high-speed cache), this external SSD delivers steady 10Gbps for transfers within the cache capacity

For an external-drive or NAS destination: CopyTrans Shelbee

CopyTrans documents saving backups to PC storage, USB storage, an external hard drive, or NAS, as well as full and incremental backup workflows. Consider it if destination flexibility is central to your setup; the vendor’s instructions do not establish independent reliability. Review the CopyTrans external-drive guide and Shelbee product page.

For selective backup and restore: Dr.Fone

Wondershare describes selective iOS backup and restore, with backups stored locally on a Windows or Mac computer. Because the suite separates functions into modules, check the current edition and license to ensure the feature you want is included. The backup and restore page and download center are the relevant starting points.

For backup combined with file management: iCareFone

Tenorshare describes backup to PC or Mac and restore to a device or external drive alongside file management. Confirm current Windows support and the specific release’s backup and restore functions on the iCareFone product page.

For broader content management: AnyTrans

iMobie lists AnyTrans as an iPhone manager for Windows and Mac with backup and content-management functions. The product-center information does not establish details such as encryption controls, retention, or selective restore, so verify that the current version covers your intended workflow before relying on it. See the iMobie Product Center.

How to choose a tool for your backup routine

  1. Decide what must be recoverable. A full-device backup, selected categories, and the ability to browse or selectively restore are different needs. Check the vendor’s current feature description for the exact tool edition.
  2. Choose where the backup will live. If it must be on an external drive or NAS rather than the PC’s internal storage, confirm that the software supports that destination. iMazing and CopyTrans describe external and network-storage options in their documentation; support may depend on setup.
  3. Check encryption and retention. Confirm whether the software offers encrypted backups, whether encryption is optional, and how it handles previous backup snapshots or incremental copies. Do not assume these features work the same way across products.
  4. Verify compatibility and product packaging. Check current Windows and iPhone support, any required Apple components or drivers, and whether backup is included in the module and license you plan to use. Product modules and versions can change.
  5. Test the recovery path before depending on it. Confirm that a backup completes, understand the restore process, and make sure you can retrieve the encryption password if you set one. Avoid treating a single unverified backup as your only copy of important data.

What an encrypted iPhone backup includes

Apple says local computer backups are not encrypted by default. When you enable backup encryption, the backup can include saved passwords, Wi-Fi settings, website history, Health data, and call history. Face ID, Touch ID, and device passcode data are not included. See Apple’s explanation of encrypted backups.

Keep the encryption password somewhere safe: Apple says it is required to use the backup, and iMazing warns that losing it prevents access to encrypted snapshots. Encryption adds data to the backup; it does not include every kind of device secret.

  • Note: This is only compatible with Apple devices that have a USB‑C port (including iPhone 15 and later, as well as all iPads with USB‑C). Using a Lightning to USB‑C adapter will not resolve the compatibility issue.

Can you back up an iPhone to an external hard drive?

Yes, some PC-mediated workflows support external storage. CopyTrans describes external-drive, USB, and NAS destinations, while iMazing describes external storage destinations. An external SSD or hard drive is storage for a computer-managed backup, not an iPhone backup solution by itself. If you search for a “portable external SSD for iPhone backup,” make sure the software and computer workflow you choose can write to that drive. No specific drive model, capacity, or compatibility has been evaluated here.

What “no iTunes required” does—and does not—mean

It means these third-party programs provide another interface for managing local iPhone backups; it does not mean Apple’s own computer backup options are unavailable. Apple’s current Windows guidance points users to Apple Devices when installed, or iTunes otherwise. iMazing says it uses Apple’s backup agent, so a third-party interface should not be treated as a way around Apple’s security model. That is the vendor’s description, not an independent security audit; see iMazing’s Using iMazing FAQ.
