If an iPhone app stays on “Installing…” or never finishes downloading, first touch and hold its Home Screen icon and tap Prioritize Download if that option appears. If it still does not move, restart the iPhone, then check whether the problem affects one app, all downloads, or other devices on the same network. Those clues help distinguish a queue or app-specific problem from an account, restriction, network, or Apple service issue.
Start with the two quickest download fixes
- Move the app ahead in the queue. From the Home Screen, touch and hold the affected app, then tap Prioritize Download in the menu if it appears. Apple recommends this for a download that is not progressing; it can move that app ahead of other queued downloads. Apple’s download and update troubleshooting steps use this same path.
- Restart your iPhone. After it turns back on, check whether the app has resumed downloading or updating. Apple recommends restarting when an iPhone or iPad app will not download or update. Apple Support
If neither step helps, use the checks below rather than repeatedly restarting or deleting the app. A stuck icon does not by itself identify the cause.

Work out whether the problem is one app, the queue, or the connection
Compare what is happening before changing settings. These are diagnostic clues, not proof of a particular cause.

Try prioritizing the affected app.
- Only one app is affected: check account prompts and installation restrictions. If other apps download normally, the issue may be specific to that app or its compatibility.
- Downloads fail across the App Store, or other Apple services also have trouble: check Apple’s service status and your network access.
- Other devices on the same Wi-Fi also cannot load web pages: the problem may be with the network rather than the iPhone.
- Other devices work on that Wi-Fi, but the iPhone does not: focus on the iPhone’s Wi-Fi, VPN, or third-party security settings.
Check Apple services and internet access
- Check Apple System Status for the relevant service. If Apple reports an issue, wait for service to recover before treating the phone as the cause.
- Try loading a web page on the iPhone. If it will not load, try the same network on another device. If that device also has no internet, Apple suggests restarting the Wi-Fi router.
- Try another network if one is available. Apple specifically recommends testing a different network when you cannot connect to the App Store or other Apple services. Apple’s connection troubleshooting guidance
- If only the iPhone has trouble on Wi-Fi, check its Wi-Fi connection and whether a VPN or third-party security software is interfering. If you are using cellular, make sure cellular data is enabled for the App Store in Settings; the exact settings labels can vary by iOS version. Resolve Apple Account, payment, or age prompts
Open the App Store and look for a prompt that needs attention. Apple says a valid payment method may be required even to download a free app. If you see “billing problem with previous purchase” or “verification required,” resolve the account prompt and then try the download again. Check whether Screen Time blocks installation
On the iPhone, go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions, then review the iTunes & App Store Purchases controls for a restriction on installing apps. If the iPhone belongs to a child in a Family Sharing group, a parent or organizer may manage that setting. Menu names and paths can shift between iOS versions. Check storage and app-specific issues carefully
Check available iPhone storage
Review available space in Settings > General > iPhone Storage. If space is very low, freeing some may be a reasonable diagnostic step before trying again. If the app installs but will not open
A completed download followed by a crash or app that will not open is a different problem from an icon stuck on “Installing…”. Follow Apple’s app troubleshooting guidance; if the problem persists, Apple advises contacting the app developer. Apple’s guidance for apps that stop responding or will not open
Before deleting an app
Do not delete it as a first troubleshooting step. Data stored inside the app may be lost when you delete it. Before removing it, check whether its data is synced or backed up and confirm you can restore or access that data. When to contact Apple or the app developer
If an app download remains blocked after you have tried prioritizing it, restarting, checking service and network access, resolving account prompts, and reviewing installation restrictions, contact Apple Support.
