On iPhone 18 Pro models, Apple supports stabilized time-lapse video up to 4K with Dolby Vision. To change the default time-lapse resolution, open Settings > Camera > Record Time-Lapse. The Camera app also offers an in-mode resolution control, and a MacRumors walkthrough reports an Adaptive option that slows the time-lapse when motion is detected.

What 4K and Adaptive mode do

Apple lists stabilized time-lapse video up to 4K Dolby Vision on iPhone 18 Pro models, along with Night mode Time-lapse. In its September 2026 launch announcement, Apple said that users can record time-lapse videos in 4K and Dolby Vision HDR. These are supported camera features, not a claim about a particular recording’s sharpness or brightness; results can depend on the scene and how the phone is positioned.

Adaptive mode is described by MacRumors, not in the Apple product specifications or launch announcement cited here. MacRumors says the mode detects motion and slows the time-lapse accordingly. This may be useful when a scene’s movement changes, but the available Apple sources do not explain the feature’s behavior.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap Camera.
  3. Tap Record Time-Lapse, then choose the available default resolution.

Apple Support documents this settings path for changing the default time-lapse resolution. The exact choices shown can depend on the device and its software.

Record a low-light time-lapse

Apple lists Night mode Time-lapse on iPhone 18 Pro models. Apple Support also advises using a tripod for low-light time-lapse recording to capture more detail and brightness. A steady mount helps keep framing consistent during a long recording.
