The iPhone 18 Pro Max is a large conventional smartphone; Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra opens into an 8-inch tablet-like workspace. In the U.S., Apple starts at $1,299, while Samsung listed its 256GB Fold8 Ultra at $2,099.99 (with a $1,849.99 price displayed when accessed on October 7, 2026). The right choice depends less on a spec-sheet winner than on whether you want a familiar handset or a foldable screen for larger, side-by-side work.

Samsung announced the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra on August 6, 2026; sales began August 7 in select markets and expanded globally. Samsung’s launch material describes the Fold8 Ultra’s 8-inch screen as a space for multitasking and creative workflows. Which screen and form factor suit you?
Choose the iPhone for a conventional handset
The iPhone remains a single-screen smartphone with a 6.86-inch measured display and weighs 249g. It may suit you if you want a large phone that you use in the usual way, rather than opening a device for a larger canvas. Its listed water resistance is IP68 under IEC 60529, tested to a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes. Apple cautions that resistance can decrease with wear.
Choose the Fold8 Ultra for an opening workspace
The Fold8 Ultra weighs 215g and unfolds to 4.1mm thick, revealing its 8-inch main display. That larger screen gives more room for multitasking and creative work than the iPhone’s conventional display, although the benefit depends on whether your apps and habits make use of the extra space. Samsung highlights features including Gemini Notebook and Now Nudge in its launch material; check regional availability for specific software features.

Samsung’s launch material describes Flex Titanium support in connection with slimness and reduced crease visibility. That description is not an IP rating, so it cannot be compared directly with Apple’s published IP68 rating.
Camera hardware: what the specifications can and cannot tell you
Apple specifies a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture. Samsung specifies a 200MP main camera with HDR at 200MP and a 50MP ultra-wide. Megapixel counts do not establish which camera takes better photographs: they do not by themselves resolve detail, low-light performance, color, focus, video quality, or consistency. The manufacturer specifications cited here do not provide comparable sample images or independent camera tests, so they do not support naming a photo-quality winner.

Battery life and charging: unlike claims, not a runtime contest
Apple says the eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro Max can deliver up to 45 hours of video playback in its test. That is a test-condition figure, not a guarantee of everyday use, and it applies to the eSIM-only model specified. Samsung lists a 5,000mAh battery and 45W fast charging for the Fold8 Ultra, but capacity and charging wattage are not runtime measurements. Because the published claims use different measures, they do not establish which phone lasts longer or how their real-world charging times compare.

Apple lists the iPhone 18 Pro Max in 256GB, 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB capacities. Samsung’s U.S. page lists the Fold8 Ultra in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB. Consider how much local space you need for photos, video, apps, and downloaded files, and compare the price for the specific capacity rather than relying on the entry price alone.

The iPhone runs iOS 27 and supports Apple Intelligence and Siri AI; Apple says Siri AI is not initially available in the EU. The Fold8 Ultra uses Android and Samsung’s foldable software and productivity features. The cited material does not establish a detailed migration comparison between the platforms, so factor in the apps, services, accessories, and devices you already use. Software and feature availability can vary by region.
Which phone should you choose?
- Pick the iPhone 18 Pro Max if you want a conventional large-screen phone, prefer iOS, or do not expect to use a foldable inner screen enough to justify its higher U.S. price.
- Pick the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra if opening a larger display for multitasking or creative workflows is central to how you use a phone and that flexibility is worth the extra cost to you.
- Compare the exact storage tier and live offer if price is decisive. Samsung’s displayed price can change, and the gap depends on whether you use its listed or observed offer price.
- Wait for independent, comparable tests if your decision hinges on camera quality, everyday battery life, or sustained performance. Manufacturer specifications alone do not settle those comparisons.
Accessories to account for
Apple says a power adapter is not included with the iPhone 18 Pro Max; the specifications list a USB-C charge cable in the box. Apple also announced MagSafe cases priced at $49–$59 U.S. at launch. Verify current stock and model compatibility before purchasing an accessory.
