For US buyers choosing between the iPhone 18 Pro Max and Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra, the starting prices are nearly identical: $1,299 for 256GB of iPhone storage and $1,299.99 for 256GB of Galaxy storage. The better value depends less on that one-dollar difference than on what you will use. Choose iPhone for iOS, Apple services, its variable-aperture camera, a 2TB storage option, or the longer battery result in one cited test. Choose Galaxy for Android, the S Pen, built-in Privacy Display, or two optical telephoto options.

Price and availability: almost a tie at 256GB

Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro Max on September 9, 2026; preorders began September 12, with availability starting September 18. Its US list prices are $1,299 for 256GB, $1,499 for 512GB, $1,899 for 1TB, and $2,499 for 2TB. Samsung’s US list prices for the Galaxy S26 Ultra are $1,299.99 for 256GB, $1,499.99 for 512GB, and $1,799.99 for 1TB. The prices are reported in TechRadar’s 2026 comparison; they are list prices, not guaranteed checkout prices. Apple’s launch timing and storage tiers are also in its September 2026 announcement.

The 256GB and 512GB tiers are effectively price-matched in the US. At 1TB, Samsung’s listed price is $100 lower; Apple is the only one of these cited lineups with a 2TB tier. Samsung’s store may show discounts or trade-in offers, so check the current price for your region and configuration rather than treating list price as the amount everyone pays. Samsung’s US product listing says a charger is not included; check the listing for your purchase before budgeting for accessories.

Which camera system fits the way you shoot?

iPhone: variable aperture and natural-looking low light

The iPhone’s headline hardware distinction is a variable-aperture main camera, a control that can adjust how much light enters the lens and gives photographers another way to shape exposure and depth of field. TechRadar’s comparison describes three 48MP rear cameras. In its own 2026 comparison, Tom’s Guide found cleaner low-light output and natural color from the iPhone. That is a reviewer finding from its comparison, not a guarantee that every scene or photographer will prefer Apple’s rendering.

Galaxy: two dedicated telephoto options

The Galaxy S26 Ultra gives users both a 3x and a 5x telephoto camera, alongside its main and ultrawide cameras. Tom’s Guide found that its longer telephoto reach captured distant subjects with greater clarity at high zoom. That makes Samsung the more flexible choice when framing subjects at different distances matters. The iPhone’s variable aperture and Samsung’s higher megapixel counts do not, by themselves, establish which phone takes better photos overall.

Battery and performance: what the published tests show

Battery rundown

In Tom’s Guide’s 2026 battery rundown, the iPhone 18 Pro Max lasted 18 hours 27 minutes, compared with 16 hours 40 minutes for the Galaxy S26 Ultra. This result favors the iPhone in that publication’s test; it is not a forecast of your screen time, because real-world battery life depends on usage and test methods. Samsung’s separate claim of up to 31 hours of video playback is a manufacturer figure under its stated conditions, not the same kind of measurement as Tom’s Guide’s rundown.

Benchmarks are useful, but not a purchase verdict

In Tom’s Guide’s 2026 comparison, the iPhone scored 4,741 single-core and 12,789 multi-core in Geekbench 6, while the Galaxy scored 3,785 and 11,563 respectively. In 3DMark Solar Bay Unlimited, the reported results were 67.9 fps for iPhone and 49.37 fps for Galaxy. These are results from specific tests, not guarantees of identical performance across apps, games, or software updates. For most buyers, the benchmark differences matter less than choosing the operating system and features they will live with every day.

Software, privacy, and productivity

Choose iPhone for iOS and Apple continuity

If you already use Apple devices and services, the iPhone is the more natural fit for keeping that setup together. Apple’s launch announcement lists iOS 27, Apple Intelligence, and Siri AI among the phone’s software features. Consider how your everyday apps, files, messages, and accessories fit your current setup before switching platforms; the convenience of continuity can outweigh small differences in specifications.

Choose Galaxy for S Pen, DeX, and Privacy Display

The S26 Ultra supports Samsung’s S Pen and DeX, making it a stronger fit for people who want to annotate, sketch, or use phone-supported desktop features. Its built-in Privacy Display is another distinct feature for people who want to limit side-angle screen visibility in appropriate situations. Samsung confirms the S Pen and DeX in its specifications and describes Privacy Display on its US product page.

  • You want the variable-aperture camera control or prefer the low-light rendering in Tom’s Guide’s comparison.
  • You need a 2TB storage option, which is not listed for the Galaxy in the cited lineup.
  • The longer battery result in Tom’s Guide’s test is a priority for you, while recognizing that your own battery life will vary.

Buy the Galaxy S26 Ultra if…

  • You prefer Android and Samsung’s software features.
  • You will use the S Pen or DeX.
  • You value a built-in Privacy Display.
  • You want both 3x and 5x optical telephoto options for different shooting distances.
