The biggest camera difference is how each phone handles zoom: Apple lists one native 4x telephoto lens plus an 8x “optical-quality” setting, while Samsung lists dedicated 3x and 5x optical steps alongside 2x and 10x optical-quality zoom. For video, Apple emphasizes Dolby Vision and pro-oriented recording controls; Samsung lists 8K/30 capture. Those specifications describe different capabilities, not proof that one phone makes better-looking photos or video.
How do their zoom systems differ?
The terms matter. “Optical” identifies a dedicated lens-and-sensor zoom position; “optical-quality” is a manufacturer’s label for an additional zoom position, not another native optical telephoto lens. Digital zoom is a separate category, and a larger zoom number by itself does not establish more usable detail.

| Zoom capability | iPhone 18 Pro Max | Galaxy S26 Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| Dedicated optical telephoto positions | 4x at 100 mm, according to Apple’s specifications. | 3x and 5x, according to Samsung’s specifications. |
| Additional optical-quality positions | 8x at 200 mm, according to Apple; this is not a second native 8x optical lens. | 2x and 10x, enabled by Samsung’s Adaptive Pixel sensor, according to Samsung. |
| Digital zoom maximum | Up to 40x, according to Apple. | Up to 100x, according to Samsung; digital zoom should not be treated as equivalent to optical detail. |
Apple also lists 2x optical zoom out. In practical terms, Samsung specifies more dedicated optical steps—3x and 5x—while Apple specifies a single 4x telephoto. Their additional optical-quality positions extend the labeled ranges, but those labels do not make optical, optical-quality and digital zoom interchangeable.

What the camera hardware specifications say
Apple lists a 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture at ƒ/1.48, ƒ/1.8, ƒ/2.8 or ƒ/4.0 and a 24 mm focal length; a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide at 13 mm; and a 48MP Fusion Telephoto at 100 mm (4x). Samsung lists rear camera resolutions of 200MP, 50MP, 50MP and 10MP. These are manufacturer specifications, not independent measures of resulting image quality. Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro Max technical specifications and Samsung Canada’s Galaxy S26 Ultra specifications document the systems.

- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- When you receive the phone, insert a SIM card from a compatible carrier. Then, turn it on, connect to Wi-Fi, and follow the on screen prompts to activate service.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Neither the higher 100x digital-zoom ceiling nor a megapixel count predicts the detail a particular shot will retain. That outcome depends on capture conditions and processing; a fair image-quality judgment needs matched scenes and settings.
Which phone offers more video formats and controls?
The clearest documented split is capture format and workflow. Samsung lists 8K recording, while Apple lists multiple 4K Dolby Vision frame rates and professional formats and controls. These are different priorities, not a direct image-quality score.

| Video capability | iPhone 18 Pro Max | Galaxy S26 Ultra |
|---|---|---|
| High-resolution capture listed | 4K Dolby Vision at 24, 25, 30, 60 and 100 fps on the main camera, and 120 fps on the main camera. | UHD 8K (7680 × 4320) at 30 fps. |
| Slow motion | Apple lists 120 fps on the main camera; its listed Dolby Vision Cinematic and Action modes have their own limits below. | Up to 240 fps at FHD and 120 fps at FHD/UHD, according to Samsung. |
| Special modes and production controls | Up to 4K/60 Dolby Vision Cinematic mode; 2.8K/60 Dolby Vision Action mode; ProRes up to 4K/120 with external recording; ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2 and Genlock support. | The cited Samsung specification lists 8K and slow-motion rates; it does not establish comparable ProRes, Log or Genlock options. |
When Apple’s listed controls matter
ProRes and ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2 and Genlock are most relevant to creators using compatible post-production or synchronized-camera workflows. ProRes up to 4K/120 is specified with external recording, so that ceiling is not simply a claim about ordinary internal recording. Dolby Vision, Cinematic mode and Action mode provide other named capture options, each with the resolution and frame-rate limits Apple lists.
When Samsung’s listed modes matter
The Galaxy’s documented distinction is UHD 8K at 30 fps, plus slow motion up to 240 fps at FHD and 120 fps at FHD/UHD. That may suit someone seeking those capture resolutions or frame rates. The specification alone does not say how its footage compares in color, stabilization, autofocus or low light with Apple’s.

Does one camera take better photos or video?
The specifications establish hardware labels and supported recording modes, not a head-to-head image-quality winner. A TechRadar reviewer compared the iPhone 18 Pro—not the Pro Max—with the Galaxy S26 Ultra across wide, zoom, macro, ultra-wide and selfie photography. The reviewer preferred the Galaxy for zoom photography and stylized shots, and the iPhone for wide-camera consistency in the reported well-lit and low-light situations. That is an attributed review impression, not an independent laboratory result or a conclusive comparison of the exact Pro Max and Ultra models in this title. Read the TechRadar comparison.
A direct verdict on the two exact models would require matched scenes, settings and firmware, with the same conditions applied to both phones. The cited specifications and review do not establish a matched Pro Max-versus-Ultra test for photo or video quality, so outcomes such as detail, color, stabilization, autofocus and low-light performance remain open here.

How to choose based on your camera use
- Prioritize dedicated optical zoom steps: Samsung specifies 3x and 5x optical positions; Apple specifies a 4x optical telephoto. Consider which framing steps you use most, rather than comparing maximum zoom numbers alone.
- Want a labeled long-range zoom position: Apple lists 8x optical-quality and Samsung lists 10x optical-quality. Neither label makes the position a separate native optical lens.
- Want 8K recording: Samsung lists UHD 8K at 30 fps. Apple’s cited video specifications emphasize 4K Dolby Vision and pro-oriented recording options instead.
- Work with post-production or synchronized cameras: Apple lists ProRes, ProRes RAW, Apple Log 2 and Genlock; check that your editing and recording workflow supports the formats and controls you intend to use.
- Need a photo or video quality winner: Compare sample footage from the exact models under the same scenes and settings. The listed specifications cannot settle that question on their own.
Samsung’s launch explanation also distinguishes its 3x/5x optical positions from 2x/10x optical-quality zoom; see the Samsung Global Newsroom announcement.
