If your iPhone 18 Pro Max shows SOS, No Service or Searching, work through the checks in order: identify what is affected, try a brief reconnection and restart, confirm the correct cellular line and SIM or eSIM, then ask your carrier to rule out account and network problems. Consider a network reset only after those steps. Cellular trouble does not by itself establish that the phone is defective or eligible for replacement.
What SOS, No Service and Searching mean
These status messages are clues, not diagnoses. Apple says No Service or Searching means the iPhone is not connected to a cellular network. SOS means it is disconnected from its own carrier network; in Australia, Canada and the United States, emergency calls through other carrier networks may still be possible. See Apple’s SOS, No Service and Searching guidance.
Before changing settings, note whether the problem affects calls, texts, mobile data or all cellular service; whether it happens in one place or in several; and whether it began after travel, a SIM or eSIM transfer, an iOS update or a plan change. These details help distinguish a local coverage or line issue from a possible device issue, but none of them alone proves the cause.
Try reversible reconnection steps first
- Toggle Airplane Mode. If a cellular network is available, open Settings, turn on Airplane Mode, wait at least 15 seconds, then turn it off.
- Restart the iPhone. Check whether the status changes and whether the affected service returns.
- Install available updates. Connect to Wi-Fi and install any available iOS update. Then open Settings > General > About and wait for a carrier settings update prompt. If one appears, follow the on-screen instructions.
Apple lists these steps in its cellular connection troubleshooting instructions. If service remains unavailable, check the line and SIM or eSIM configuration next.

Check the cellular line, SIM or eSIM, and roaming
Confirm the intended line is on
If you use Dual SIM, open Settings > Cellular, select the affected line and make sure it is turned on. If the line is missing or cannot be activated, contact the carrier to confirm its eSIM setup or physical SIM configuration.
SIM arrangements differ by market and model configuration. Apple’s Dual SIM with eSIM guidance, dated September 18, 2026, names iPhone 18 Pro Max and describes regional differences: its mainland China guidance says the model can be activated using eSIM or physical nano-SIM, while its Hong Kong and Macao list identifies it as supporting eSIM. Check your exact model and region before looking for a SIM tray or following physical-SIM instructions.

If you use a physical SIM
Apple recommends removing and reinserting the SIM. Use the tray method only if your model has a physical SIM tray. If the card is damaged, does not fit, or was moved from another device, ask your carrier whether it should be replaced. A paper clip or SIM eject tool can open a tray; buying a tool is not necessary if you already have a suitable paper clip. Apple’s SIM troubleshooting instructions describe this option.
If the problem began while traveling
For the affected line, check Settings > Cellular > Cellular Data Options and turn on Data Roaming if your plan requires it. Roaming can incur data, voice or other charges, so confirm applicable costs and conditions with your carrier before enabling it. Apple’s Dual SIM user guide cautions users to consider applicable roaming charges.

Ask the carrier to rule out account and network causes
Your carrier can check account and network details that cannot be confirmed just by changing iPhone settings. Ask it to verify:
- That your account is active and in good standing, and that the plan is set up for the service you need.
- Whether there is coverage at your location or a local outage.
- Whether the device is blocked or barred on the network.
- For eSIM activation, whether the carrier supports eSIM for your plan and device and whether activation has completed.
Apple says eSIM setup requires an active plan from a carrier that supports eSIM and generally requires Wi-Fi or a hotspot during setup; the available activation method depends on the carrier. See Apple’s eSIM setup guidance. The carrier is the source for your account, plan and local network status.

Use Reset Network Settings only after simpler checks
If reconnection steps, line checks and carrier checks do not resolve the issue, you can consider Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset > Reset Network Settings. This removes saved network settings and previously used networks, disconnects Wi-Fi, and may turn off data roaming. Apple says this reset does not erase photos or other media. You will need to reconnect to Wi-Fi afterward. Details are in Apple’s iPhone reset settings guide.
Do not confuse that option with Delete All eSIMs. Deleting all stored eSIMs removes them from the iPhone; a new eSIM or physical SIM must then be set up to reconnect to cellular service. Do not choose it as a routine troubleshooting step unless you are prepared to arrange cellular setup again. Apple explains the difference in its reset settings guide.
When to request service—and what to document
If your carrier confirms there is no account or network problem and hardware is suspected, Apple says service may be needed. Before contacting Apple or an authorized service provider, record the exact status message, the affected line and services, the locations and times where the problem occurs, and the checks you have already tried. This gives support a useful account of the symptoms and what has been ruled out.
Apple’s troubleshooting guidance does not say that cellular problems automatically qualify for replacement, and the available information does not establish an iPhone 18 Pro Max-specific defect or replacement program. A service assessment is the next step when carrier causes have been ruled out and the evidence points toward hardware—not a guarantee of a particular repair or replacement outcome. See Apple’s cellular troubleshooting guidance.
