No—not necessarily. “SOS” means your iPhone is not connected to its cellular network; it does not prove the phone is defective or needs replacement. If you use AT&T, first install iOS 27.0.1 and check for a carrier-settings update: AT&T’s notice, last updated October 2, 2026, says the update addresses an issue that may affect some iPhone 18 Pro Max phones. Then work through the network and SIM checks below before arranging diagnostics.
What SOS means on an iPhone
Apple groups “SOS,” “No Service,” and “Searching” as statuses that indicate the iPhone is not connected to its cellular network. In Australia, Canada, and the United States, an iPhone showing SOS may still be able to place emergency calls using other carriers’ networks. The status alone is not a diagnosis of a failed radio or other hardware problem. Apple’s cellular-connection guidance was published June 23, 2026.

If you use AT&T, install the recommended update first
AT&T’s iPhone 18 Pro Max support notice, last updated October 2, 2026, says Apple released iOS 27.0.1 to address an issue that may affect calls, texts, data, and 911 calls on some iPhone 18 Pro Max phones. AT&T also mentions an Apple carrier-settings update. This is a specific update recommendation for some affected devices, not evidence that every iPhone 18 Pro Max stuck on SOS has a hardware defect. - Connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi if available.
- Install iOS 27.0.1: open Settings > General > Software Update and follow the prompts if the update is offered.
- Check for carrier settings: open Settings > General > About and wait briefly. If an update prompt appears, accept it. AT&T says carrier settings may also roll out automatically.
A contemporaneous October 2, 2026 report from Tom’s Guide described AT&T customers reporting connectivity trouble, sometimes showing SOS. That report said the cause was unclear at the time; it does not establish a universal problem or prove that affected phones need replacement.

Try the basic connection checks
- Turn Airplane Mode on, wait at least 15 seconds, then turn it off. Apple recommends this to prompt the phone to reconnect.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Open Settings > Cellular and make sure the line you intend to use is turned on. If you use dual SIM, confirm the correct line is enabled.
- Install any available iOS update and check Settings > General > About again for carrier settings.
Ask your carrier to check the line and network
A carrier-side problem can leave a working phone without cellular service. Contact your carrier and ask it to check the items Apple identifies:
- Whether there is an outage or coverage problem where you are.
- Whether your account is active and in good standing, and whether your plan is correctly set up for the iPhone.
- Whether the device or account is blocked, or whether IMEI registration is required.
- Whether an eSIM is properly activated and provisioned, or whether a physical SIM is damaged or unsuitable.
Only your carrier can access and manage account details. If you use a physical SIM and it may be damaged or incompatible, ask the carrier about a replacement SIM rather than attempting a repair yourself. If you use another carrier or live outside the United States, follow that carrier’s current instructions; AT&T’s reported issue should not be assumed to apply to you.

When to contact Apple about service
Arrange diagnostics if the carrier rules out account, activation, coverage, and network problems and the iPhone still shows SOS after the updates and connection checks. Apple says service may be needed when hardware is suspected. You can request an inspection at a Genius Bar or Apple Authorized Service Provider, or ask about mail-in service. An estimate requires inspection, and available service options depend on location and parts availability. Apple’s iPhone repair page explains service options.

If you need emergency help
If you are in immediate danger, try the local emergency number. In supported circumstances and regions, an iPhone showing SOS may connect an emergency call through another carrier. AT&T advises trying 911 when cellular and Wi-Fi are unavailable; if the call does not connect, the iPhone may offer an emergency satellite-text option. Follow the on-screen emergency instructions if offered. Availability and operation depend on your location and circumstances. AT&T’s emergency-calling guide provides additional details.
