Both have 6.3-inch displays with refresh rates up to 120Hz, but the better choice depends on your budget, camera priorities, ecosystem and the value you place on a stated software-support period.
Price difference: $405, but the base storage is not equal
As of October 7, 2026, Apple’s U.S. store listed the unlocked iPhone 17 at $929 for 256GB and $1,129 for 512GB. Google’s U.S. Store displayed the Pixel 10a from $524, with $599 crossed out; the Pixel is offered with 128GB or 256GB. The $405 difference is the subtraction between the displayed entry prices, not a storage-matched comparison. Google’s displayed price is promotional, so check the live checkout price before buying.

For a closer capacity comparison, the 256GB Pixel 10a is the relevant Pixel tier against the iPhone 17’s 256GB base model. The cited store information does not establish a current price for that Pixel configuration, so it cannot support a precise same-storage price gap. Carrier trade-ins, financing and other offers may change what you pay; compare like-for-like checkout totals rather than combining a carrier discount with an unlocked list price.

- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charger and charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Display: same size and top refresh rate, different specifications
Both phones use a 6.3-inch OLED-family display and support refresh rates up to 120Hz. Apple calls its panel Super Retina XDR OLED and lists 2,622 × 1,206 resolution at 460 pixels per inch, Always-On, and ProMotion adaptive refresh. Google calls its panel Actua pOLED and lists 1,080 × 2,424 resolution at 422.2 pixels per inch, with Smooth Display from 60Hz to 120Hz.
The manufacturers’ brightness figures use different labels and should not be read as a controlled head-to-head test. Apple lists 1,000 nits typical, 1,600 nits HDR peak and 3,000 nits outdoor peak. Google lists up to 2,000 nits HDR and 3,000 nits peak brightness. These published figures do not establish which screen is brighter in every use condition.

Cameras and video: compare hardware, not just megapixels
Apple lists a 48MP Dual Fusion rear system comprising a 48MP main camera and a 48MP ultrawide. It also describes a 12MP optical-quality 2x telephoto option. The front camera is 18MP Center Stage. Google lists a 48MP wide camera and a 13MP ultrawide, digital Super Zoom up to 8x, and a 13MP front camera. Both official specifications list 4K video recording, though supported frame rates and features differ.
Those specifications describe hardware and modes, not comparative image quality. They do not settle low-light results, shutter response, consistency, video quality or which phone produces photos you prefer. No comparable independent camera test is established here, so choose based on the specific camera features you expect to use rather than megapixel counts alone.

Battery and charging: manufacturer claims are not a head-to-head test
Apple claims up to 30 hours of video playback and up to 27 hours of streamed video playback. It says the iPhone 17 can reach 50% charge in 20 minutes with a 40W-or-higher adapter and USB-C cable. Google lists a typical 5,100mAh battery and 30+ hours of battery life; it says the Pixel 10a can reach 50% in about 30 minutes with a 45W USB-C PPS charger or higher. Google says the charger is sold separately.

The two battery-life statements use different manufacturer-defined measures and conditions, so they do not show which phone lasts longer in comparable everyday use. The stated charge times also depend on the specified charging equipment. A controlled test using the same workload and conditions would be needed for a direct battery-life ranking.

Processor, durability and connectivity
Apple lists its A19 chip with a six-core CPU and five-core GPU; Google lists Tensor G4. These processor names and core counts alone do not establish which phone is faster for a particular task. Both manufacturers list IP68 dust and water resistance. Apple specifies an IEC 60529 rating of up to 6 meters for up to 30 minutes. Google’s cited Pixel 10a page lists IP68 but does not give the same depth-and-duration detail.
For U.S. models, Apple says iPhone 17 has no physical SIM-card compatibility and uses eSIM. Google lists one nano-SIM plus eSIM. If you are switching phones or carriers, confirm eSIM support with your carrier and check how you will transfer your number and data.

Software support and ecosystem
Google explicitly promises seven years of OS, security and Pixel Drop updates for the Pixel 10a. Apple’s cited iPhone 17 specifications page does not state an equivalent fixed support duration, so the published information here does not establish numerical parity between the two support commitments.
Your existing devices and services can matter as much as the spec sheet. An iPhone may be the more convenient fit for someone already using Apple devices and services; a Pixel may suit someone who prefers Android and Google’s ecosystem. These are ecosystem preferences, not a universal performance verdict.

Which phone should you choose?
- Choose by total price and capacity: compare the actual checkout prices for the storage tiers you need. The displayed starting prices differ by $405, but the iPhone entry configuration has twice the storage of the Pixel entry configuration.
- Choose by display priorities: both offer 120Hz maximum refresh on a 6.3-inch panel. Apple lists higher pixel density; the manufacturers’ differently qualified brightness figures are not a direct test.
- Choose by camera use: weigh the iPhone’s listed ultrawide resolution and optical-quality 2x option against the Pixel’s specified camera setup and digital zoom range. Specs alone do not predict the photos you will get.
- Choose by battery evidence and setup: treat battery-life claims as separate manufacturer measures, account for the specified charging accessories, and verify U.S. carrier eSIM compatibility if relevant.
- Choose by software commitment and ecosystem: Google states a seven-year update commitment; Apple’s cited specification page gives no fixed duration. Your preference for iOS or Android may decide the choice more strongly than a headline spec.
