The iPhone 17 Pro Max is a large conventional smartphone; the Galaxy Z Fold8 is a foldable that opens from a compact cover-screen device into a wider viewing surface. That form-factor choice matters more than a simple spec-sheet winner. Apple’s U.S. starting price of $1,199 was announced at launch in September 2025, while Samsung’s U.S. purchase page lists the Fold8 from $1,899.99. Those figures come from different pricing contexts, so they do not establish a current, like-for-like price difference.
Two different ways to use a large phone
iPhone 17 Pro Max: one large screen
Apple’s iPhone 17 Pro Max has a 6.9-inch OLED display. It remains a conventional smartphone: the screen is always the main display, with no hinge or separate cover screen to manage. Apple lists a resolution of 2868 × 1320 and a refresh rate of up to 120Hz. Apple’s technical specifications give the full device details.

Galaxy Z Fold8: cover screen plus unfolding display
The Fold8 can be used while closed on its cover display or opened to a larger inner screen. Samsung’s U.S. product page presents the phone as a device that unfolds into a larger display for viewing and multitasking. Samsung’s U.S. overview describes that positioning.
For dimensions, Samsung Latinoamérica lists a 7.6-inch inner display, a 5.4-inch cover display, and support for up to 120Hz. Those are regional specifications, not confirmation of every U.S. model detail. Check the specification page for the country and exact model you intend to buy: Samsung Latinoamérica’s Fold8 specifications.

How to interpret the U.S. prices
Apple announced a U.S. launch starting price of $1,199 for the iPhone 17 Pro Max in September 2025, with capacities from 256GB through 2TB. This is launch pricing, not a verified current Apple Store quote. Apple’s launch announcement provides those details.

Do not subtract the iPhone’s launch price from Samsung’s current page price and treat the result as today’s price gap. For a useful comparison, check both manufacturers’ prices on the same date, in the same country, at the same storage capacity. Keep full retail prices separate from trade-in credits, carrier bill credits, financing and temporary offers.

- Choose the conventional-phone format if you want one large display without unfolding the device. The iPhone 17 Pro Max offers up to 2TB in the cited Apple specifications.
- Consider the foldable format if switching between a cover screen and a wider unfolded viewing surface suits how you use a phone. Samsung’s regional specifications list a larger inner display, alongside the smaller cover display.
- Compare cameras by more than megapixels. Samsung’s regional listing identifies dual 50MP rear cameras, while Apple publishes its camera configuration in its technical specifications. The cited material does not establish a controlled camera comparison, so megapixel counts alone cannot identify a winner.
- Check the exact country model before relying on a spec. The Fold8’s detailed display, weight and camera figures cited above come from Samsung Latinoamérica, while the prices cited are from Samsung’s U.S. store.
What the specifications do—and do not—settle
The published figures clarify screen arrangements, listed capacities and the weight and price information available from the cited pages. They do not establish which phone lasts longer on a charge, performs better in benchmarks, or takes better photos in a controlled comparison. Those judgments require comparable testing; they should not be inferred from screen size, weight or camera megapixel counts.
