iPhone 17: First Benchmark Tests—How Fast Is Apple’s A19?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The regular iPhone 17 is a substantial CPU upgrade over the iPhone 16. Early independent reviews put it around 3,700 in Geekbench 6 single-core and 9,300–9,460 in multi-core, while graphics tests also show a strong result for a non-Pro iPhone. The important qualification is that these are short benchmark measurements: the iPhone 17 Pro still has a larger GPU and vapor-chamber cooling for sustained workloads.

At a US starting price of $799, the iPhone 17 therefore looks less like a cut-down model and more like a high-performance mainstream phone. Whether it is the right choice depends on how much of your workload is ordinary daily use, short bursts, long gaming sessions or professional creation.

What is being tested?

This article covers the standard iPhone 17, not the iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, iPhone Air or iPhone 17e. Apple announced it on September 9, 2025, with general availability reported for September 19, 2025. The phone starts at $799 in the United States and comes with 256GB or 512GB storage. See Apple’s technical specifications and US purchase page.

A19 hardware

  • Six-core CPU: two performance cores and four efficiency cores.
  • Five-core GPU with hardware-accelerated ray tracing and Neural Accelerators.
  • 16-core Neural Engine and Apple Intelligence support.
  • 6.3-inch OLED display with ProMotion up to 120Hz.

Apple does not list RAM on its public specification page. Geekbench result pages report approximately 7.49GB available to the system, which is independent system reporting rather than an Apple-confirmed memory specification.

First Geekbench 6 results

The first reviews agree on the direction of the result—a clear lead over the iPhone 16—but not on one universal score. Differences can come from Geekbench revision, iOS version, temperature, review sample and whether a publication reports one run or an average.

Device Single-core Multi-core Source and method
iPhone 17 3,701 9,460 Tom’s Guide review average
iPhone 17 3,701 9,460 TechRadar review
iPhone 17 3,502 8,810 AppleInsider review
iPhone 16 About 3,301 About 8,033 TechRadar comparison
iPhone 16 About 3,306 About 8,009 AppleInsider comparison

How much faster is it?

Using TechRadar’s figures, the iPhone 17 is about 12% faster in single-core and 18% faster in multi-core than the iPhone 16. AppleInsider’s numbers produce a smaller gap of roughly 6% and 10%. That spread is why a single score should not be treated as an official A19 performance rating. The defensible conclusion is a meaningful CPU improvement, with the exact percentage depending on test conditions.

Current Geekbench Browser evidence

Sampled Geekbench Browser submissions through August 16, 2026 show how much individual phones can vary. Results range from roughly 3,384 to 3,680 single-core and 8,211 to 9,484 multi-core. Examples include 3,384/8,211, 3,552/9,215, 3,625/9,207, 3,680/9,303 and 3,673/9,484.

These are user-submitted Geekbench 6 results, not a controlled laboratory average. The pages identify Geekbench 6.7.0, A19 and six cores, but include different iOS versions, including iOS 26.x and one result labeled iOS 27.0. A phone that is warm, charging, indexing after setup, in Low Power Mode or running background tasks can score differently.

Can it beat an older Pro?

In Macworld’s testing, the iPhone 17 scored 9,277 in Geekbench multi-core, compared with 8,044 for the iPhone 16 and 8,736 for the iPhone 16 Pro. That shows the standard model can exceed an older Pro in a particular CPU workload. It does not make the iPhone 17 a complete replacement: the 16 Pro has different cameras, display characteristics and other hardware, and benchmark software or operating-system differences can change the result. See Macworld’s review.

GPU results: strong, but name the workload

The first graphics tests are positive, but their scores cannot be merged into one ranking because they use different 3DMark workloads.

Test iPhone 17 result Context
3DMark Wild Life Unlimited 130.97 frames per second Tom’s Guide result
3DMark Extreme 3,295 PhoneArena; iPhone 16 scored 2,397, Galaxy S25 2,500 and Google Pixel 10 2,025 in that table

Sources: Tom’s Guide and PhoneArena. A high peak score indicates graphics throughput, not guaranteed frame rates after a 30-minute game session.

iPhone 17 versus iPhone 17 Pro

Feature iPhone 17 iPhone 17 Pro
Chip A19 A19 Pro
GPU Five cores Six cores
Cooling Apple’s standard aluminum-frame design; no vapor chamber is specified Apple-designed vapor chamber
US starting price $799 $1,099

Apple says the Pro’s vapor chamber enables up to 40% better sustained performance than the previous generation. That is Apple’s claim for the Pro, not an independent measurement of the regular iPhone 17. See the Pro announcement.

The standard model is the better performance-value choice for short CPU bursts, normal apps and most photo processing. The Pro’s extra GPU core and cooling matter more for long gaming sessions, repeated video exports, professional 3D work and other workloads that keep the chip busy for many minutes.

What the scores mean in everyday use

Apps, photos and multitasking

The higher CPU result should help with app launches, computational photography, browser tabs and switching among demanding apps. These gains are most visible when tasks are CPU-bound; ordinary social and messaging apps may not feel dramatically different from an iPhone 16.

Video editing and exports

A19 should reduce processing and export time, but the available evidence does not establish a universal export percentage. Storage speed, project resolution, codecs, thermals and the editing app all affect the outcome.

Apple Intelligence and local AI

The 16-core Neural Engine and Apple Intelligence support indicate that the phone is designed for local machine-learning features. No cited test measures a specific Apple Intelligence task under controlled conditions, so it is not justified to claim a particular speed increase for those features.

Gaming

Peak GPU performance is only one part of gaming. Frame rate also depends on the game engine, iOS optimization, graphics settings, API support, display refresh rate and heat. The 120Hz ProMotion display can make supported games look smoother, but it does not turn a peak benchmark into a sustained-frame-rate guarantee.

How to test sustained performance properly

No cited early review establishes a definitive long-duration result for the regular iPhone 17. A meaningful test should:

  1. Run Geekbench 6 once from a cool, unplugged phone and record the score.
  2. Repeat it after five consecutive runs, noting the highest and lowest results.
  3. Run a 20-minute 3DMark stress test and record loop stability, temperature, brightness changes and frame-rate decline.
  4. Play a demanding 3D game for 30 minutes at maximum and balanced settings, recording frame rate, temperature and battery drain.
  5. Repeat on Wi-Fi and cellular when network-related heat is relevant.

Without those measurements, a strong launch score should be described as burst performance, not proof of sustained superiority.

Battery context

Apple rates the iPhone 17 for up to 30 hours of video playback; Apple’s launch material rated the iPhone 16 for up to 22 hours. These are controlled video-playback estimates, not universal web-browsing or gaming results. Brightness, cellular signal, app mix, temperature and power settings can change endurance substantially. PhoneArena reported a 3,692mAh battery, but Apple does not publish capacity as its principal comparison metric, so treat that figure as third-party information. A faster chip is valuable when it completes work more efficiently; benchmark performance alone does not prove better battery life.

Value and buying advice

Buy the iPhone 17 when

  • You want near-Pro-level short-burst CPU performance without paying the Pro price.
  • You are upgrading from an iPhone 15 or older and care about gaming, multitasking or photo processing.
  • You prefer the standard model but still want a 120Hz display and strong graphics performance.

Pay for the iPhone 17 Pro when

  • You play demanding 3D games for long sessions.
  • You export video repeatedly or use other sustained professional workloads.
  • You specifically need the Pro camera system, six-core GPU or vapor-chamber cooling.

Consider an older Pro or Android flagship when

A discounted iPhone 16 Pro may make more sense if cameras and other Pro hardware matter more than peak CPU speed. Android flagships can offer different cooling systems, GPU behavior and pricing, but cross-platform comparisons require matching the exact Geekbench version, OS, performance mode, chipset, cooling and test conditions. Macworld placed the iPhone 17’s 9,277 multi-core result near the Galaxy S25 Ultra and OnePlus 13 and ahead of the Pixel 10 Pro XL in its comparison set; that is one publication’s result, not a universal ranking.

Apple’s US selector lists the 256GB iPhone 17 from $799 and 512GB from $999. Trade-in estimates shown on the product page range from $35 to $695 depending on model, condition and eligibility. AppleCare+ is available through Apple’s official service page, while trade-in details are at Apple Trade In; coverage prices and credits vary by configuration and location.

Bottom line

The first independent tests show the iPhone 17 delivering a clear CPU step over the iPhone 16 and unusually strong graphics performance for a standard iPhone. Its $799 price makes that combination compelling. Choose the Pro for sustained GPU-heavy or professional work, not merely because its name suggests that everyday apps will be faster.
