The most important reason was functional: the camera pair supports Spatial Photos and 1080p Spatial Video when the phone is used with Apple’s spatial-content ecosystem.
What the leaked iPhone 16 images showed
Pre-production molds, dummy units and renders reported in February 2024 showed two rear cameras stacked vertically inside an elongated, pill-shaped bump, with the flash beside them. That was a clear departure from the diagonal two-camera layout used by the iPhone 13, iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 standard models. MacRumors appropriately treated the molds as provisional evidence because a pre-production part is not proof of the mass-produced phone: February 2024 leak report.
The images established a likely physical arrangement, but they could not establish the final sensors, software features or camera quality. Those details became facts only after Apple’s announcement and published specifications.
Apple confirmed the change on September 9, 2024
Apple’s launch announcement confirmed that the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus use vertically aligned rear cameras and can capture Spatial Photos and Spatial Video for viewing on Apple Vision Pro: Apple’s iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus announcement. Which iPhone 16 models have vertical cameras?

“iPhone 16” can mean the base model or the entire generation, so the vertical dual-camera description should be reserved for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus.
Why did Apple return to a vertical camera layout?
The strongest explanation is spatial capture, not styling alone. Spatial images and video use two viewpoints to create depth, similar to the slightly different views seen by human eyes. With the phone rotated into landscape orientation, the vertically separated Main and Ultra Wide cameras provide a suitable arrangement for those viewpoints.

Apple confirms the resulting feature set rather than publishing a detailed statement that the camera spacing itself was the sole design motive. Its specifications list Spatial Photos and Spatial Video recording at 1080p and 30 frames per second on the iPhone 16 models: official iPhone 16 technical specifications.
A typical spatial-capture workflow
- Open the Camera app.
- Rotate the iPhone into landscape orientation.
- Select the spatial-photo or spatial-video mode when it is available in the installed iOS version and current camera mode.
- Keep the subject reasonably still and avoid excessive movement for more convincing depth.
- View the result on Apple Vision Pro or another compatible spatial display.
The files can remain in the ordinary Photos library, but the intended immersive effect is most apparent on a compatible spatial display. Conventional screens may show the content without the same depth experience.

What camera hardware came with the redesign?
The vertical arrangement did not add a telephoto lens or automatically make every photograph better. The relevant standard-model upgrades were:
- 48MP Fusion Main camera, including a 2x optical-quality option derived from the Main sensor.
- 12MP Ultra Wide camera with autofocus and macro-photography support.
- Up to 10x digital zoom, rather than a separate long-range optical camera.
- Newer Photographic Styles and Spatial Photos/Video support.

How the iPhone 16 differs from the iPhone 15
The iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus placed their two rear cameras diagonally. The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus use a vertical stack, combine it with the 48MP Fusion and autofocus Ultra Wide cameras, add macro capability and spatial capture, and introduce Camera Control. The standard iPhone 16 models also gained the Action button previously associated with the Pro line. Apple’s launch announcement covers the Action button, Camera Control and A18 chip alongside the camera system.

If you own or plan to buy Apple Vision Pro
The redesign gives the standard iPhone 16 models a straightforward way to create Spatial Photos and 1080p/30 fps Spatial Video for that ecosystem. This is the clearest functional reason to prefer the newer layout.

If you mainly take ordinary photos
Image quality comes from the sensors, lenses, processing and software, not from vertical alignment by itself. The 48MP Main and autofocus Ultra Wide cameras bring useful upgrades, but the physical orientation alone is not a photography performance guarantee.
If you need long-range optical zoom
The iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus remain dual-camera phones without a dedicated telephoto lens. Choose a Pro model if optical reach and advanced professional photo or video controls matter more than the standard models’ design.
If appearance and accessories matter
The camera bump geometry differs from the iPhone 15 generation. Do not assume an iPhone 15 case or camera protector fits an iPhone 16 simply because the screen size is similar; check the exact model.
What the leak got right—and what it could not prove
- Leak: molds and renders indicated a vertical camera stack before launch.
- Confirmation: Apple’s September 9, 2024 announcement established the shipped iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus design.
- Verification: Apple’s specifications established the camera hardware and 1080p/30 fps Spatial Video capability, while post-launch reviews confirmed the physical arrangement.
A mold cannot prove final image quality, software availability, dimensions, regional rollout or the quality of a rumored feature. In this case, the hardware prediction was accurate, but the spatial-capture significance became certain only after Apple documented it.

For the standard redesigned phones, Apple’s official purchase page is iPhone 16. Buyers who need the Pro camera system can compare iPhone 16 Pro. Apple Vision Pro is documented at Apple’s official product page. Current prices, availability, trade-in offers and AppleCare+ costs vary by country, storage tier and date, so verify those details directly before purchasing. For cases and protectors, use Apple’s iPhone accessories page or confirm exact model compatibility with the manufacturer.
