Which camera system suits you?
Choose iPhone 15 for an ultra-wide camera
The iPhone 15 has two rear cameras: a 48MP main camera and a dedicated 12MP ultra-wide camera. That extra lens gives you a wider field of view for scenes where stepping back is not practical, such as interiors or group shots.
Choose iPhone 17e if one rear camera is enough
The 17e uses a single 48MP Fusion rear camera. It offers 2x telephoto framing from the main camera, but Apple does not list a separate ultra-wide camera. Do not treat that 2x framing as an additional rear camera: the meaningful trade-off is a dedicated ultra-wide view on the 15 versus the 17e’s single-camera system.

How do the displays compare?
Both phones have a 6.1-inch OLED display rated at 460 ppi, but their resolutions differ slightly and the iPhone 15 includes Dynamic Island. Apple lists higher brightness ratings for the iPhone 15: 1,000 nits typical, 1,600 nits peak HDR, and 2,000 nits peak outdoors. The 17e is rated at 800 nits typical and 1,200 nits peak HDR, and its specifications list an anti-reflective coating. These figures describe manufacturer ratings; they do not establish which screen will look better in every environment.
Battery life: Apple’s estimates favor the 17e
Apple rates the iPhone 15 for up to 20 hours of video playback and up to 16 hours of streamed video. Its figures for iPhone 17e are up to 26 hours and up to 21 hours, respectively. These are Apple estimates, not results from an independent head-to-head test, and actual battery life varies with use and device condition.

What is the iPhone 15 vs iPhone 17e price difference?
There is no supported current price difference to quote because the reviewed official sources do not establish a current iPhone 15 price, and the 17e prices below refer to different points in time.
| Price reference | U.S. price | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 17e launch announcement, March 2026 | $599 for 256GB | Apple’s announced starting price at launch, not evidence of today’s price. |
| Apple U.S. store page, checked October 7, 2026 | $699 for 256GB; $899 for 512GB | Prices displayed on the page when checked; carrier deals and trade-in offers may change the amount paid. |
| iPhone 15 current price | Not stated | The reviewed Apple specification page is not a current retail listing. |
Apple’s March 2, 2026 announcement said availability began March 11, 2026. The Apple U.S. iPhone 17e store page displayed the later prices above when checked October 7, 2026. To calculate a meaningful gap, compare same-day prices in the same country for equivalent storage, condition, and purchase channel. Keep unlocked retail prices separate from carrier promotions and trade-in credits; if the 15 is used or refurbished, identify its condition and seller.

Connectivity, durability and storage details
Check network bands against your model and carrier
Apple lists 5G sub-6 GHz for both. The iPhone 15 specifications include mmWave for supported model configurations, while the 17e specifications list sub-6 GHz. If mmWave or a particular band matters where you live, confirm the exact model and carrier compatibility before buying.
Both have the same stated IP rating
Both are rated IP68, with a maximum depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes under Apple’s stated conditions. That is a resistance rating, not a claim that either phone is waterproof or that water damage is covered.

The 17e’s listed starting storage is 256GB
Apple lists the iPhone 17e in 256GB and 512GB configurations. The reviewed iPhone 15 specification page does not establish current retail capacity availability, so compare the actual storage and price of the particular 15 listing you are considering.
Which should you buy?
Pick iPhone 15 if you value camera flexibility or screen brightness
- You regularly use an ultra-wide view and want a dedicated rear camera for it.
- Apple’s higher published brightness ratings or Dynamic Island matter to you.
- You find a suitable iPhone 15 at a price that makes sense for its condition, storage, and seller.
Pick iPhone 17e if newer hardware and listed storage matter more
- You want the newer A19 generation and can live without a separate ultra-wide camera.
- You want a model whose published configurations start at 256GB.
- Apple’s higher stated video-playback estimates are relevant to your choice, while recognizing that they are not independent test results.
If you already own an iPhone 15
Specifications alone do not make upgrading worthwhile for every owner. Weigh how often you use the ultra-wide camera, whether your current battery or storage is limiting you, and the actual cost to upgrade after any trade-in. The 17e adds newer hardware, but its single rear-camera arrangement may be a downgrade for someone who depends on the 15’s ultra-wide view.
